EDIT: People who think that fanfiction is somehow more crap than any other form of amateur fiction really need to spend more time on Fictionpress.com. It's all equally crap, and a huge portion of "original fiction" is, when you look at the characters and plots, anything but original. At least fanfic cops to the fact that its appropriating outside sources, rather than boosting everything and just filing the serial numbers off of it.
And people who think that a good fanfic writer should just switch off to original fic are missing the point. Many of them DO write original fic, and many of them are excellent at that as well. The point of fanfic is the interaction between the fanwriter and the source material and the other fans and fanwriters. For the majority of fanwriters, fanfic is a social activity.
EDIT 2: One of my favorite things about fanfic is fic written on a challenge or a dare. If I know the fandom, I can find a way to write just about anything, and crackfic challenges are double the fun.
