Edit: And why do so many people vote that he shouldn't say it out loud? If people think I'm a bad person for thinking the way I do, I don't want to associate with them in any case.
Not to mention, if he hadn't made it clear from the start why he didn't donate money, people would only have pestered him for an explainaton anyway. It wasn't cruelty, it was saving time.

You are right but:
Only because you're right doesn't mean it's right. You could've kept your comments to yourself, because I'm sure the two friends who survived have enough guilt on their shoulders to last a lifetime.

What if the others weren't drunk/culpable though? Unlikely, just something that crossed my mind. Even so, the OP was right: it was fucking stupid. No one gets so drunk that they don't understand what they're doing, unless they're so far gone that driving at all would be impossible. They must have known on an intellectual level that it was wrong.

And what kind of a time is 11 am for this? Seems more like an evening thing.

You have a right to not donate, but It wasn't a good idea to so aggressively pass judgment on the injured and dead, you could of handled it with more subtlety.

Why should I pay for their self-inflicted injuries?
These girls were grade-A stupid.
If it was someone who had been hurt badly because a drunk crashed into them, I'd donate whatever I could afford.

So this Tuesday 3 girls went drunk driving at 11 AM and crashed. 1 died 2 are in a coma. One of there friends came around asking for a donation to help pay there medical bills. I declined and said if theyre dumb enough to go drunk driving at 11 in the morning on a snowday when the roads are bad then they can face the consequence and pay for it themselves. I got a lot of dirty looks and i was told i was being selfish. Does this mean im a jerk or would you have done the same?
Yes, yes you are.

Granted, what they did was stupid but the way you reacted was very disrespectful and insensitive. Flip the roles around, two of your friends are comatose, one dead. You start a whip around to raise some funds for them, a guy turns and says "They got what they deserved, I'm not helping you". See what I mean?

I would have made the same choice, but I don't think there was any need to say it in such a harsh manner.

No sympathy.

was actually asked by some girls I know about my opinion of such an event (though it was a hypthetical "what if" thing) and I said quite simply I would not feel sorry for them. I dont know the people, and if they were driving drunk, they asked for what happened to them. Than I was asked how I would like the same treatment if I was in that situation, and I couldnt help but laugh. Whne they asked why, I told them that while I may be a C+ average college student, Im not stupid enough to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while drunk, and if I ever was, and I didnt die but went into a coma, and ppl got donations to help with my treatments, if I woke up, I wouldnt send thank-you letters, but little cards saying, "you're a moron."

So, no, you are not a bad person, you are not a great person though, but you're not a prick like people probably said you are. You're smart enough to know that having sympathy for those girls is against the laws of nature. (and yes, I am a firm believer in Darwini's theory.)

Oh my goodness! How horrible!

Their poor car...I'd donate a little bit to help fix the car up; it can go to a more responsible person!

Also, I admire all three girls! The one that died, and the other two who are in a coma. Thank goodness they crashed before they hit an innocent bystander! Also, kudos for them for not crowding our prison system! Also, for testing out our new universal health care plan!

Bless their unintentionally efficient souls.

You're probably right, but in that situation it's best to keep shut and donate.
Death is a touchy subject.

Indeed. Hiding whom you are because people might not like your true face is not a thing I see as very honorable. Unless, of course, people seeing your true character might actually have some dire consequences for you. For example, not telling your customers you think they are idiots.

You get judged by what you say and do, not who you are, ie act like a dick, dick or not, you get treated like one im afraid

Wait, what? People wake up from a coma and get fucking charged?

As for your actual point, I can see where you're coming from. I don't know if I'd side with you if it came up, but I can see your point.
He's an American, we don't have free health care over here and someone needs to pay to keep the hooked up to life support >_>
What happens if they're in a coma for 20 years and no one pays?
They pay monthly, not when you wake up I believe and if no one can pay, then they take them off life-support I would imagine or come to some kind of deal with the Insurance company or the victim's family. Needless to say, its a flawed system.
So if you have no family or friends, and no insurance, the hospital takes you off of life support?

That can't be what happens!
You underestimate the cruelty of the American healthcare system.

If you show no signs of improving and they can't find any legal way to pay for your life-support, then ya, that's what they do. Thankfully, I don't believe it happens often.
What the fuck? How does anyone even condone that, let alone allow it to go ahead?
Personally speaking, I hate that it's how things are. The fact that my country-men have decided that healthcare should be for profit, is honestly disgusting. I don't like to think that if I get really sick, my life will be held hostage until I pay a ransom so that a doctor will heal me.

Unfortunately, that's not the predominant opinion here. The myth of the "protestant work ethic" is sort of a rampant disease here. People believe that if you work hard, you'll be rewarded. They believe that anyone who didn't work hard enough to have health insurance probably doesn't deserve it. And they're also simply afraid, that if we give everyone a right to healthcare, there won't be enough to go around. I don't want to justify it, but I do try to understand it.

You are in some ways correctin your beliefs and assertions.

However, part of being a functioning human in society is recognising when you should proclaim your beliefs and when you should keep them quietly to yourself. Politely decline to pay, citing personal reasons of beliefs. If they push warn them against it. If they push further explain calmly and rationally why you do not think you should pay the bills of people who were probably unwise to be out so late.

Due to the dead. In the same way that you don't badmouth someone behind their back unless you're pretty mean, badmouthing someone when their dead begins to cross a line of common decency, especially when talking to their friends.

You're not a bad person per se, and you weren't entirely wrong in your beliefs, but that was not the time to express them.

This happened at my high school. Two girls got into a car (while intoxicated) with a drunk driver knowing he was drunk and they crashed. One ended up in a coma for like 2 weeks. Everyone felt bad for them and wanted to help them. They got all this special attention and allowances. I hated that they were being rewarded for their stupidity and for endangering people who weren't involved (pedestrians and other drivers).
