A cult in America made some teenagers commit suicide last year due to a "doomsday prediction" and yet the world is still spinning.

I understand the Mayan pattern and how they may have predicted certain events, but I have only one problem. Also according to their predictions, their empire should still be in power Today and Onward. Well, the conquistadors fixed that. So don't take it too seriously.

Protip: people who don't have several weeks of food + bottled water stockpiled become the raging looting masses at the first sign of disaster. You should have a weeks worth at almost all times.

It doesn't need to necessarily be 2012. It could be the big earthquake, zombies, aliens, nuclear war, what have you.

Always be prepared.

Well I hate to break it to you, but there's nothing we can do to stop 2012. Its going to happen no matter where you go, no matter what you do. And I can say same thing about 2013, 2014, 2015, etc. etc.

I've seen all the theories about 'Planet X aka Nibiru' et. al. and I can tell you that this kind of fear mongering has been going on for centuries. If there really is some kind of global conspiracy to cover up the fact that we're all screwed on the winter solstice 2012, well then I guess we're all screwed.

The fact that these same doom sayers predicted the end of the world through the arrival of 'Nibiru' 5 years ago, and again 3 years ago, and the fact that there have been solar storms since the beginning of time, planetary alignments have already happened and there is NO empirical evidence to suggest the Mayans knew anything about the end of the world leads me to believe that it is all conjecture and bullshit, meant to sell a bunch of fucking books.

The sign that I am a true skeptic is that I WANT TO BE CONVINCED THIS IS REAL. Thusfar, I'm not. There are other things that I am suspicious of but this thread is about 2012, and I just don't buy into it. I guess we'll find out in just over 3 years, huh? See you at Christmas.

Nothing will happen. At all.

2012 is predicted to be the end of the world because it's where the Mayan calender stops. More realistically, that's probably where it stops just because that's where it stops, as they never went any further.
Yep, the guy just got tired of chiseling.

There is nothing to worry about, relax. Remember, even if there was some giant catastrophic end of the world scenario, what are you really going to gain by worrying about it. After all, you'll likely die in said catastrophic event, so just live your life to the fullest up until 2012 if you're really worried. Then if nothing happens, continue living your life to its fullest anyway.

Also, 2012 could just be the end of the current age. Nothing big.
Actually you're right, December 21 2012 marks the beginning of the Age Of Aquarius. If you're into that kind of thing.

Now I've got the song stuck in my head. Thanks for nothing. :)

Just to throw my weight behind all this:

There is absolutely ZERO point to being pro-any doomsday theory. Why?

Okay, let's imagine you're right. You're dead. We're all dead, and nobody gives a flying shit whether you believed it would happen or not.

Or you're wrong. You're alive, we're all alive. And everybody treats you like a retard.

Regardless of whether or not it'll happen, the only sensible way to be is anti-theory.

But... it won't happen. I mean, look at Cracked.com if you want the full deal. All the other "prophecies" that "match" the date have been purposefully tweaked so that it looks like they do, or just plain fabricated. It's bollocks.

Well, I've never been against hanging out in a field of flowers while dressed like Jimi Hendrix with music from an old 80's movie/play playing. Care to join me?

I don't think the world will end any time soon. Any actual thing that could end the world would have to come from space and anything like an asteroid or some other stereotypical world ending thing I'm sure would have been noticed by now.

Or I could be completely wrong and my 8th grade going on 9th grade education doesn't cover this.

I can't vote, seeing as your idiocy made the correct answer wrong by spelling "You're" wrong.
I have seen (and commented on) two of these threads back-to-back, just to reiterate a point: It's an advertising campaign, the same as District 9, for a shitty movie that's cashing in on idiots who believe that the predictions of an ANCIENT CIVILISATION are valid.

I'm a pretty open-minded guy, but these idiots get my goat.

I just saw that IHC or whatever comercial about 2012. And being the come rational person I am I think I might puke. Am I worrying to much about 2012? Do you think it'll happen?
You're probably sick of hearing this by now, so if that's the case, please feel free to ignore this completely. But the commercial for the Institute for Human Continuity is a viral-advertising campaign for the apocalypse movie 2012, detailing the same end-of-the-world theories that everyone gabs on about.

In any event, don't worry about it at all. Maybe it's just me, but I believe that when the world ends, it will be by man's own hand, and I'm more afraid that believing in 2012 being the end of the world actually makes it so, like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Don't give it the power, and I'm sure it will be just fine.
