Hey guys, today was my first day going to the gym. I got a free trial somewhere and decided to get in shape and whatnot. I was just wondering if anyone here works out, and if you do, what's your motivation for exercising?

EDIT: Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised by how many people here work out. It's motivating to know my fellow gamers aren't the fat and lazy stereotypes people make us out to be. Also, thanks for the advice, I really had no idea what kind of exercises to do.

I'm too lazy to go to a gym. I run with friends every now and then and play an occasional bit of tennis, but not much else.

I am relatively fit, though. If it didn't work, I would be going to the gym.

I couldn't get up steps without huffin' and puffin, so I started in.

Some suggestions: Find a good lookin personal trainer, and sign up for a couple sessions. If its your first time in the gym, you do NOT know what to do. If you imitate-- you won't be doing the motions properly, you won't make the kind of progress you want, and your interest will fizzle and fade.

Motivation for me was 100% seeing results. I worked with a trainer once a week, and by the end of two months I had put on a lot of nice muscle here and there and dropped over 15 pounds, without heavy diet modification. This is after a full year of going to the gym and knocking weights around like a moron. Cut out the intensive carbohydrate loading and use low calorie protein shakes to curb hunger and assist in the development of lean muscle.

Finally, 5 days a week: 30 min muscle group \ 30 min cardio three days a week, and full hour cardio on the off days. Do legs on the last day before the two day rest.

For full cardio days, i recommend doing a spin class or something of that nature-- just pushing along on a treadmill or elliptical like all the other dummies will not assist in keeping yourself motivated. Spin is serious business.

One of the top mistakes people make is to go in and do either 100% muscle or 100% cardio. For building lean muscle and looking better, you want some of both. I know iron man super strength guys don't do cardio, but they look gross, as well.

PT every Mon-Fri morning, and Hapkido Classes M-W-F. It helps keeps the creative juices going, and you really do start feeling better after a while.

I wouldn't call it exercise, but I take a walk every day, and that's usually enough to keep me in shape. I've been to the gym a few times in my life, but I didn't like it. Too many scary looking machines that tried to rip off my arms.

I swim for my exercise when I'm at school, and don't really exercise apart from dicking around at home.

I went to a gym for about a year and lost 20 kilos. I got too busy to keep going though so I just cancelled it, but I still exercise around my house(running or using my dumbbells). It at least keeps me at my current weight...although I'd like to lose a bit more eventually, but that is more on my shitty diet than exercise.

I do yoga and walk/run pretty much everywhere I go.
I at least get some sort of activity in everyday and it seems to be working thus far. :3

I once exercised every day for a month. Just calisthenics though; sit-ups, push-ups, calf-raises, squats, etc. A pitiful amount for most people, but I'm seriously underweight, it was all I could manage.

After said month, I had abs. ABS! CLEARLY DEFINED ONES! And my upper arms were noticeably thicker.

Alas, I am very self conscious, and I can only exercise when the house is empty. Which it almost never is. So I stopped.

I could never go to a gym; I know its silly, thinking you aren't fit enough to go to a gym, but that's the way it is.

I've never tried yoga before... I hear it's quite hard to hold a lot of the positions for a long time...

OT: I've put on weight like hell since I've stopped going to school... tried jiujitsu for a while... hurt my arm though so I'm back to doing nothing...

When the weather gets nice like this. I go for a run. Also, I work in a kitchen a lot of moving and a lot of sweating.

Actually I just got done killing myself on push ups, curls, and timed push ups... I routinely go to the gym to bench and squat. If I can't then I do stuff at home see sentence about this one. I love it and as of right now don't wish to stop.

Ohhh and motivation is just so I can feel better about myself.

Thanks for the advice. ^_^

I was too scared to do the strength stuff, so I just did the treadmill the whole time. I'm really thin, so running comes easy to me, but I want some upper body strength, maybe some abs. Next time I go, I'll see how much a session with a trainer costs, and I'll try out the spin class.
