I go to the gym every morning. And I work out so I can stay in shape, and my girlfriend only likes athletic guys so I try to look good for her.

I work out approx 3 times a week in a gym but only muscle training, as suggested spinning or other classes one can attend at the gym are fine for cardio, but I personally favour running and excercising outside. If you have a hard time finding the motivation then I'd suggest attending a class, but my suggestion for you is to find a training-buddy, if none of your friends are up for it usually a gym will have a programme that can introduce you to one.
I went through a couple of buddies using said programme but the guy I work out with now I've been working out with for 5 years and that has been enough to motivate me to keep training and enjoy it :)

Also since you mentioned your quite thin one of the best things you can do is to make subtle changes to your diet: eat more protein, chicken, lean fish and so forth (go look it up on the amazing web), emphasize on subtle, its never smart to radically change diet since it will almost never work. Eating slightly more meat (read protein if your a vegetarian) is easy, and it keeps one from falling into the trap that many new people to gyms fall into - buying protein powder and overusing it, which can give wierd results; especially when your not aqquainted with muscle training. Progress is slow at start but it is supposed to be.

Best of luck

I hate the gym. I always train at home. Try the 5BX plan. Good fun and a long term plan too.

I work out at home. I lift weights and do some serious cardio. My motivational force is my desire to become a firefighter.

I used to go to a gym, but it just wasn't for me. I personally work out with very extreme workouts, I play soccer and work construction

I do four weight sessions a week. In my teen years I competed in amateur bodybuilding with some moderate success. My motivation then was that I enjoyed competing and being in good shape. Nowadays I am no where near as lean but far more muscular as I play a lot of rugby and need the size.

but I disagree that doing 100% or 100% cardio is a mistake. I do all weight-lifting and weight-training every other day and do the full cardio on the days inbetween and I'm getting pretty good results from that.
Absolutely. How you break down your training is up to you. But the point is, you do cardio and resistance-- separate days, but you do both of them. Thats what I mean.

People tend not to get the lifestyle changing results most of them seek by just going in and doing the elliptical machine three times a week, the classic "i dont understand why im not losing weight, i go to the gym three times a week!" complaint.

My other, unrelated favorite complaint, is "I don't understand why i'm fat! Like today, all I'm eating is a salad!"

Yeah, just a salad all right; a chef's salad, with two eggs, a half pound of ham, cup of cheese, and a generous slathering of ranch dressing.

I go to the gym about 6 times a week usually, the only motivation I need is seeing myself get in better shape

I work out at the gym every weekday for at least an hour. Usually run about 2-4 miles a day, and swim around 500+ meters. On top of that I'm an avid climber, hiker, and surfer.

My job requires a lot of walking. I think the estimate was 8 to 10 miles a day just for a 6 hour shift. Does that count?

Hey guys, today was my first day going to the gym. I got a free trial somewhere and decided to get in shape and whatnot. I was just wondering if anyone here works out, and if you do, what's your motivation for exercising?
I go to the gym, there are just too many reasons to do so. It's a bit difficult at the beginning. You'll see the first results after around 3 months - that's too long for most people. Therefore you should get your motivation elsewhere! I already posted this somewhere in the Escapist, but you should either use a reward or punishment system to keep yourself going.

I work out a bit at home, push-ups and sit-ups, and a friend and I are gonna start running together soon. It was her idea, but she's a lesbian. To be honest, she and I actually dated before, so to that I say Challenge Accepted. Not that it's in any way relevant to working out, but whatever.

I lift 5 days a week. My original motivation was to remove belly fat when I was 14 but now it's just to stay muscular and get ripped. Also I'm crazy self conscious.

I've been studying Karate for 7 years and have a probationary Black Belt (Shodan Ho) so I train twice a week at my Dojo, and I try to do 10-20 minutes on my rowing machine every day (but I'm bad at sticking to this routine).

I've never been to a gym, and i probably never will

I work out with my own weights at home, or on my bike outside, in the fresh air
( with a sports mask on to absorb all the car exhaust )
other than that, fresh air.

my weight vary's between 75-85 kilos depending on what kind of activities i get upto and how-much muscle i build during the year i like to keep myself as light as possible for cycling purposes

because a sumo wrestler physique may be stronger but will not get me up a hill very well!

but i don't mind packing on a few kilos so i have the extra calories to re-build muscle at the same time if I've pushed it a little too far

i do use protein shakes, and bars as-well as isotonic drinks on my bike because cruising around at 20+m dry's your lungs out, fast.

for people trying to build big muscles, make sure you use the heaviest weight you can rep about 20 times, and leave it for about 3-4 days in-between workouts otherwise you'll just end up degrading your muscles and making them hurt instead of building them, also drink plenty of water and eat extra calories ( including a high protein meal ) or your body will have nothing to build said muscle with.
you can always burn fat off with cardio later if you overdo it, the muscle will stay as long as you continue to feed yourself protein and use it regularly

good luck!
