I've never tried yoga before... I hear it's quite hard to hold a lot of the positions for a long time...
It is but it's a lot of fun and you feel great after.
Kinda like getting a massage when you walk out, especially when you try hot yoga (Power yoga done in a 100+ degree F room) :D

I run everyday along with push ups and sit ups, motivation to join the Air Force.

And in this heat swimming is really enjoyable.

As much as it may not seem like it, yoga helps strengthen the muscles as well as heal them. It's odd how it works. Must be an awesome chi flow >.<

Well that sounds good... but I just don't want to take any chances right now... it's been constantly moving in and out of socket for the last two months and it's gotten really bruised and disgusting looking around where I hurt it as of late... I really need to go see the doctor again...

Yeah, I go to the gym. I guess I wanted to become fitter when I started, but then once I was, I liked it so much I kind of stayed on for the fun of it. Yeah, there's nothing like heightened levels of andrenaline mixed with testosteron and dopamine.
These days my focus is more on boxing, but the fact that I still go to the gym helps me develop the strength and stamina I need to do that sport more efficiently.

All of what this guy says are valid points which you want to keep an eye out for. But you have to remember that eating and sleeping routines are far more important to your physical development than what you'll do at the gym, i.e. 20% is in how you train. 50% is in what and when you eat. 30% is the rest you take. (Disclaiming right here that it's an indication, not an exact science.)

I wouldn't call it exercise, but I take a walk every day, and that's usually enough to keep me in shape. I've been to the gym a few times in my life, but I didn't like it. Too many scary looking machines that tried to rip off my arms.
To SonofaJohannes: You know you can adjust the weights, right? =/
Also, walking counts as excercise. In fact, a lot of organisations (such as the NHS) these days recommend walking over going to the gym, since it's still exercise, but it puts less strain on your body. That walk your go on once a day probably does more for your health than all the exercise I take combined! :D

I currently run whenever I get the chance, and do P90X Ab Ripper once or twice a week. It's the summer and I don't really have the opportunity to go to the gym.

During the school year I usually go 4 times a week, doing two muscle groups a day. Run the other days.

I really love doing weights and love the feeling of being fit.

I was quite obese for a while (American Obese for a point of reference). I decided to get back into the shape I was in back in high school. I tried for a couple of years dieting and walking with no real effects. I ended up getting a program to track my intake of calories and nutrients, I added in a good work out routine, and here I am a year later looking good and feeling good. I work out 4-5 days a week around my house with my buddy sparring, and 3 days a week at the dojo.

I work out at home some. But I do it in really small increments so that I don't really notice.

I do a bit of weight lifting and punching bag work here and there, but these are my two main forms of exercise, and they've been helping me lose quite a bit of weight.

1. I run to and from my car at my house. It's a really short sprint, about maybe 25 yards from my door to my car. But when you do that every single time you go to and from your car, it adds up.

2. I park very far away (unless I'm in a hurry or need a lot of big stuff) Walking through the parking lot actually gives me quite a bit of exercise.

Honestly, I can't really do the whole "20 minutes a day" thing. I just do a few small things here and there and try to eat less crap food and...yeah. It's been working ok for me.

Don't expect super quick results or anything, but if you just wanna get into slightly better shape, just do what you'd normally do and just add a bit more movement into it.

I hope this helps.

I completely agree with that. They are quite icky. Lean and a little muscled is more attractive and I think it is also more practical.

OT:
I quad skate at least 6 hours a week. Surprisingly, it keeps me from hurting my lower back. The movement doesn't seem to strain my SI joint (sacroiliac) as much as walking, sitting or standing. It doesn't feel like exercising, dodging the kids and dumb teenagers makes it almost a game.

Some suggestions: Find a good lookin personal trainer, and sign up for a couple sessions. If its your first time in the gym, you do NOT know what to do. If you imitate-- you won't be doing the motions properly, you won't make the kind of progress you want, and your interest will fizzle and fade.

Motivation for me was 100% seeing results. I worked with a trainer once a week, and by the end of two months I had put on a lot of nice muscle here and there and dropped over 15 pounds, without heavy diet modification. This is after a full year of going to the gym and knocking weights around like a moron. Cut out the intensive carbohydrate loading and use low calorie protein shakes to curb hunger and assist in the development of lean muscle.

Finally, 5 days a week: 30 min muscle group \ 30 min cardio three days a week, and full hour cardio on the off days. Do legs on the last day before the two day rest.

For full cardio days, i recommend doing a spin class or something of that nature-- just pushing along on a treadmill or elliptical like all the other dummies will not assist in keeping yourself motivated. Spin is serious business.

One of the top mistakes people make is to go in and do either 100% muscle or 100% cardio. For building lean muscle and looking better, you want some of both. I know iron man super strength guys don't do cardio, but they look gross, as well.
This is mostly what I was going to say, but I disagree that doing 100% or 100% cardio is a mistake. I do all weight-lifting and weight-training every other day and do the full cardio on the days inbetween and I'm getting pretty good results from that. If you don't let your muscles recover and build new muscle, then you're working out with diminishing returns. You need to let the muscles rest so they can reinforce the area with new muscle and so that you can have the strength to finish the next workout.

I'm not really allowed per say to work out, it conflicts with my presumptive hipsterness.

Also my heart is a bit wonky, so I'm supposed to avoid strenuous activity.

I got to the gym and occasionally work out at home. I've been lazy this summer though. Still average weight for my height and age, but I've gained some pudge. Gonna work it all back off again for fall semester though :3

Yeah. I focus more on my cardio since I'm kind of naturally buff and can put on muscle really easily (the flipside: I can also get fat easily if I'm not careful or if I get hurt). But I'm in the gym about four days a week for a half hour, then I come home and run on the treadmill (or run on the beach).

You're probably just prone to reinjury. I have a similar problem with my knee. I can barely play tennis anymore (pivoting is hazardous) but running is fine. My knee came out of joint once on a hiking trip near the top of the mountain. Coming down was a slow, scary, and painful process.

Injuries suck.

Hey guys, today was my first day going to the gym. I got a free trial somewhere and decided to get in shape and whatnot. I was just wondering if anyone here works out, and if you do, what's your motivation for exercising?
Burn excess energy and frustration. More important to stretch my muscles. I hate the feeling I'm atrophying (I couldn't walk for about 9 months at one point. HATED it.)
Plus originally the stiffness of the muscles not being able to move lasting for days was a blessing I LOOOOOVED. You could sit around all day, feeling exhausted, DO NOTHING and feel good doing it. Versus that "my ass hurts" feeling of doing that without having worked out.
