Well this topic is somewhat confusing to me. See, my idea is that the internet turns boys into men, men into women, and women into boys and constantly goes through this cycle.
So no group could really stick around for that long.

Kill it with Fire.

KILL IT WITH FIRE!

*jumps into the flames*

On Topic: I don't like "girl gamers". I really don't. I am extremely prejudiced towards them, and it will take a while until that wears off. OooOOooo! I'm a girl, look at me! Here are some pictures. Can I have this? Can I borrow some gold? Aw you are so sweet. Do you mind if I roll need on that? Te-he-he-he-he. *hugs* *kisses* xoxo <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 PONIES! PUPPIES!

So. Yeah. Fire.

Lots of it.

What I don't have an issue with is girls that play games. Whether they are pros or casual nubblets (like me), I care not. However I tend to cringe when they are on the same voice channel as me and insist on talking. And talking some more. And talking. Not about the game, but girl topics. For fucks sake woman, I do not care about your new haircut, your boyfriend, your sunburn, your shoes. I want to kill things.

Women who use their appearance (which is a PG term for "sexuality") for social gains are the same egotistical assholes regardless of the setting. Doesn't matter if they're flashing cleavage at a club or flirting on voicechat, it's insulting and manipulative. Anyone subjected to this behavior, man or woman, has every right to call out the offending female.

Guys can be just as bad, of course. That's what people need to realize: gamers are gamers, regardless of gender. If a gal is acting out for attention, she's an idiot. If a guy is acting out for attention, he's an idiot. If a guy or gal is sexist or racist or creepy towards anyone else, he or she is an idiot. Anyone, guy or gal, within earshot of this behavior should point it out.

I'm sorta unsure about this. On the one hand, I don't advertise my gender but I don't hide it either. If there is a gender section on a profile I click female, I don't pretend to be anything I'm not. I don't play many MMORPG's but the few I have I choose female characters. I haven't gotten flirted with too often and if I do I tend to just ignore it. I don't encourage it as far as I know. I'm also bad at knowing what flirting is so that kinda helps. :p

That being said, girls who do do that tend to annoy me. Who draw attention to themselves with their name and/or avatar, regardless if they get pissed off about it or not. It's not needed and is very annoying to read. I dislike it when girls use their gender to get things in games or real life. Of course, as a female gamer, I want equality and to talked to because I'm a good person but I know that won't always be the case at least for a while. I refuse to count someone out for randomly talking to me either online or in-game either. Because I know, yes, it may or may not be because I'm a girl but it might turn into a good friendship and I'd rather deal with the douches to get a good friend.

In any case, I don't usually act very girly and most people I know online are surprised to find out I'm female. I'm happy with how I act, I may have my real name in my profile and/or my gender but I don't use that to get anything. Well, at least I hope not. :p

In conclusion, yes, I believe some girls use their gender to get attention and if they go to the extremes they do they should learn to deal with the flack that may come with it.

This is the main reason I tend to remain "neutral" - meaning 99% of the time I'm referred to as a guy I don't bother to correct it. I make no big deal of my gender but I know from experience others might.

I understand gurl gamers though. It's a sort of a coping mechanism. Names lose strenght when the target starts using them. (Same reason I once went by the name "*****" in an RP..) I've never come across a girl trying to get special treatment in a game, though I have told guys in a guild to stop tip-toeing around me more than once.

And I guess coming out in the open from start (and blacklisting jerks) beats almost befriending someone, only for them to turn into hormone-addled idiots the moment they realize they're playing with a girl.

It can be very difficult to stay gender-neutral online. On forums and such, sure. But when it comes down to it, most of the social interaction I've had in the context of online gaming has involved them asking whether I'm male or female - usually, sooner rather than later. I guess the way I type broadcasts some kind of almost-femininity. I don't know.

But yeah, I think most female gamers despise "gurl gamers" as defined by the OP. I find them abhorrent. They're an embarrassment. They reflect poorly on female gamers everywhere. No - females everywhere. I try to stay as distant from that behaviour as possible.

I don't think that Gamer Girls are shooting themselves in the foot at all. Why? Because they're in the same group of girls who 'forget' to wear a bra whilst wearing a tight shirt. "Oh no! I've forgotten to wear a bra and my nipples are showing through my shirt, look!". Like it was said in the first post, I don't mean that about girls who play games but the ones who advertise they're a girl. The way I see it, I treat everyone online as I would want to be treated before I get to know them better. Guys, girls and everything in between get chatted to, raged at, smack-talked to all the same because hey, we're all there to have fun.

From a personal standpoint, I like girls that play video games. Often they're quite fun to play with. However, "Gamer Girls" have a tendency to be a bit.... attention seeking, for lack of a better term. Usually it starts with them essentially shouting "I'm a girl who plays video games!!!", and then either glow in the fawning of socially inept gamers or get in arguements based on their need to go around yelling this. They can't logically be taken seriously, or even respected if they exhibit such behaviour.

The trouble is with girl gamers is not necessaries the label they put on themselves, but how men try and reciprocate upon it. Boys will go after girls regardless of the situation and games are not much different nowadays.

Gaming has been a predominately male focused past time, with main characters and plots being male drive, but in the latter half of the decade, if not the last decade entirely this has begun to change. But that will not change the perceived novelty of a girl playing MW2 or something else. And it will be seen as such for awhile yet because gender bias takes a long time to change.

For the final segment of my argument pie, I call into focus those girl gamers whom have very hot pictures of themselves for avatars. For the same matter I also ask why guys do the same, i've seen more than one picture in my internet career of a guy with muscles growing out of his muscles flexing like the Strongarm Alchemist. The question is why to both groups and to you, dear reader, why that is? Is it truly vanity or something else?

Goddamnit. There is absolutely no reason that a gender (51% of the world's population, happening to have different genitalia from the other) should have to make sure to completely cover up... that is, PRETEND they're male because you think being open invites sexism.

You know what? I always use teamspeak. TF2, WoW etc. My pictures is of me, because I like to know who I'm talking to or playing with and I extend the same courtesy. When I'm playing with strangers, I do get 'are you a girl for real?' and the like. And I'm supposed to accept the sexist comments because I'm putting myself out there as a normal human being? I've met plenty of 'shooterboy31's with pictures of themselves. When they're advised to play anonymous to avoid sexism, I will accept criticism from people like yourselves.

Having said that, I have met a few of the 'gurl gamer' type myself (and even had to have 'talks' with a few friends about behaving that way). To be honest, in any hobby you're going to get the slutty girl who's not really into it but sees it as a way to get attention- if you've EVER been to a rock gig, you'll know that. Those girls are as abhorrent to me as they are to you. But please don't say I'm one of them because I dare to use my real voice in games and my real picture in forums. I'm not advertising that I'm a girl. I'm advertising that I'm a person.

Honestly, I've never encountered this. Assumably because I don't play online, and I've only met a couple of girls who play video games in real life (and I would barely call them gamers).

But I can imagine that the things you have said would be annoying. No more annoying however though than "YOU USED ROCKETS, THAT'S A NOOB WEAPON, HAXROR!". It's a problem with the individual, not the group.

EQUALITY? ILL GIVE YOU FUCKING EQUALITY!!!

on a less rage note they have equality, the only equality they will ever get untill they open their fucking mouths and say the magic words in any way or form "i r gurl lulz"

then you as a girl have thrown equality out of the window. As long as you are not competeing in live turnaments you can get by pretending to be preteen and male. This is an ok unless you intend to have intimate conversations while influnced by alcohol or worse your never ending addiction for ATTENTION (Note, if any guy started talking like any of these gamer girls talk under the influence of any of the above he would be vent banned /gkicked and ip banned from any game).

Thats why you dont play with girls in the first place. BECAUSE ultimately someone else on your team will start thinking with his prick rather than his brains and it only gets worse the more people are involved.

Doesnt help that most chases from wow or even elsewhere SUPPORT my view xd

Ever play TF2 with a girl on the team using her mic? I guarantee 2-3 people will go medic in order to heal her, no matter what class she is.
Ever thought that those girls might just be using their mic in the same way everyone else is, to help along gameplay or make jokes etc? I nearly always have my mic on; we may have played together and I might be one of the girls you're talking about. It makes me sad to think that's your assumption. I don't want to be healed by morons who have better things to do. I just wanna play the game, help the team to win and have a bit of fun, just like everyone else on their mics.

Some female gamers hurt themselves like that but it's no excuse for guys to act like assholes.

This, I've never seen a girl trying to get special treatment. When I play female characters I seem to get free stuff without saying anything.. and I'm fairly sure I get invited to groups more. I never pretend to be a female, but if I'm running along and some random trades me and gives me free stuff, then I'll take it, and carry on running. If anyone actually talks to me then they'll find out I'm male.

I'm not sure if I've met a "gamer girl" really, but I've seen a hell of a lot of guys acting strange and "white knights".

I am...very confused. Are we fighting for equal rights on games? I wasn't aware.

No, seriously. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. In my experience with online gaming, girls that I've met just...play. I guess I'm just lucky or something. Now, I'm not gonna lie, when I find out there's another girl on the server, I'll go out of my way to make a big deal about it because I think it's funny (and hey, how many of us are REALLY out there?), but I don't go around saying "Be impressed, WE ARE WOMEN!".

I REALLY don't get your logic of "shut up and then you'll get equal rights" thing, though. How is that supposed to work again? Are you suggesting that if we don't say that we're girls then eventually the natural way of things will shift towards guys suddenly thinking "omg...women. WE SHOULD RESPECT THEM!" all on their own? That's silly. I know it's not necessary to announce your gender, but I've found that usually in games people will say things like that kind of use your gender. If someone calls me "he" or "him", I don't see what's wrong with saying "Well actually it's 'she'". Now, granted, after that happens, I am willing to accept the consequences that may follow that, but usually it's met with "Oh you're a girl? Well GET BACK IN THE KITCHEN!" followed by some other playful banter, then we get back to the game.

Maybe it's just because I'm a PC gamer, but a lot of the time guys are less stupid than you think they are. I guess I agree in the sense that a girl shouldn't make it her mission to announce that she's a girl, but in most cases my gamer tag is BrownSuga, which I guess somewhat implies that I'm a girl, but so what? If guys can't handle that, screw them. I'm not gonna change my nickname because immature dickwads can't handle another female in the room. That's not fair.

No, not really.

I can understand why females wish to emphasize their gender when they enter a male dominated environment.

That some of them choose to do so is not a valid excuse to treat them like crap.

Seriously? Honest question...how often have you experienced this? Because I NEVER have. When I play TF2, most of the time there aren't even enough medics on my team (because seriously, no one seems to want to be medic, even when you need it, amirite??), and I ALWAYS play with my mic. I really think most of this "girls get special treatment" is imagined versus reality. Except in WoW. I'll admit, it happens all the time in WoW.

WTF how are you going to hide that your a female when most games use voice chat. If your the one idiot "with no headset" you get picked on just as much. Damned if you damned if you don't.

If the games doesn't use voice chat most of those girls using men, are in reality male as well.
