Depends on where, and what kind of people. My class consists of people who mostly care about their grades. Myself, I think school is just a key to a better life, nothing really educational except social studies, math, and language, as most teachers just want you to be able to name random facts. Oh sure, the power of knowledge is the power for me, but I don't really see the advantage in being able to name all Swedish kings and so on.

Also, can you blame people when adults seem to try their hardest to make school the most depressing place on Earth? My school is as boring in design and color as a prison, and they keep saying that this is the only chance in life we have, and if we fail now, we fail life.

I love this thread, the next rock-pun is only ever a stones throw away...you crag me up, guys.

Sorry...

OT: Kid's heads must be full of rocks, they're always taking things for granite. Mind you, I have not concrete evidence for that claim.
YES! More! x'D

To the OP a few posts down:
We can have a serious discussion any day. The meteor shower of fun that has erupted from this volcano of puns cannot be stopped! :D
My puns are igneous! Gravel before me!

Leave no stone unturned in the quest for the perfect rock-pun.

Jesus christ people, he made a slight mistake. You all sound like morons calling him out on the exact same thing.

No matter it seems how much they push that school is important, it seems like many kids just don?t care and then walk away with their pants slightly down and thinking they?re ?gangster.? It just sickens me and I almost fear for our generation.
Think of it like this: In a few years, these people are going to be your competition when trying to get a job.
They may be, but, I've been turned down from McDonald's because I was over qualified. So getting a part time job whilst I'm in college is really quite hard.
What do you mean overqualified? I haven't heard of anyone having problems like that.

Here in America (specifically New York) I try my hardest in school and get high moderate to Good grades (amazing in Social Studies. :D) but I noticed many, seem to not give a damn in the world and just hang about, getting drunk, getting low grades, talking when teachers talk, just overall just not seeming to care that High School will have effect on their lives.

Many skip classes, go about doing stupid things, and just never seem to get the memo that they aren?t going to be successful. I school has made these PSA things about staying in class, doing work, etc, and while they?re cheesy, there true.

I can?t speak from experience but I assume it?s not as bad in foreign countries.
Well, high school won't have the effect on your life that you think it will... Let it be known though, that a good work ethic (which I assume you have since you are annoyed with poor work ethics) will get you farther. Success is something not necessarily worth measuring though. Not on a personal scale at least. Excelling in the career path you pick, and making sure you're content with where you end up is a big deal though.

Basically, I've no idea why I said all that, but I do think many take a free primary education system in the U.S. for granted. When they are pulling skeleton shifts at the local Wal-mart and you are doing whatever it is you want to do, maybe they'll re-think things.

Boulder-dash.

The premise maybe a little eroded, but our puns are slate-of-the art!

Well, seeing how for the most part after about 9th grade it's entirely bullshit, these kids have an excuse.

Math becomes completely impractical and is tacked on to make sure there are enough courses to keep it going through the years.

In English you learn about Shakespeare, a dead poet who's language has been outdated for centuries and is now considered improper. It doesn't help you write a letter, it's useless unless your planning on becoming a poet.

They don't teach one thing, not one thing about life after school, like how to survive, earn an income, maintain a family etc...

You'll get good grades, and you'll no doubt get into a decent College.

Just know that all your education for your high school life was basically for nothing.

School's in no way a guarantee you'll be successful or happy. Plenty of people don't do shit in school and coast well through life and plenty of people do 'moderate to good' grades to end up in a position making somebody else who didn't do shit in school money.

That isn't to say that school or a good education can't give you the leg up that you need to succeed where you might otherwise fail, but neither or are some sort of magical pass that you'll be on easy street.

We had kids that didn't do much but party too in my generation, and so none of that's a new thing unique to yours, but a lot of people just don't have any real hope, and seeing people left and right that 'worked hard, and studied hard' lose their jobs and property and becoming super highly educated burger flippers does have a profound psychological effect on people.

I've seen plenty of people in managerial positions that think a high school diploma's a fancy meal, leading people that could think circles around them, but are too valuable in that position to be promoted out of it.

Normally I'd agree with the first guy, but when your post is complaining about the lack of education and commitment to intelligence of your peers, it's a bit easier to poke fun at errors.

He edited it. Fun is over guys. We rocked it while we could.
Though I did argue against what he actually talked about in his post, and thus, didn't judge the "fun" factor of the thread purely on the merits of the title, I disagree.

Him correcting it means it was an accidental anomaly, and because we can now confirm he actually made it as a mistake, and not as a deliberate joke, that makes it sooo much funnier.

I mean, that is just...so hypocritical. Not to mention the point he was trying to make in his post is really ignorant and misinformed. All in all, pretty hilarious, if you ask me.

As a teacher myself, I can say they absolutely do take it for granted. Because they're children, and that's something children naturally do. In fact, it's the natural state of human beings to take things for granted. Gratitude and appreciation are taught.

The problem, then, is that too many parents are taking this opportunity for granted. By the time a kid is 18, he's spent around 12% of his life in school. That's it. The rest is under the supervision of the parent. If the parent isn't pushing, making sure the kid behaves and works, and keeping tabs on things, the school doesn't stand a chance.

That's definitly true. But it's actually a fairly victimless form of comedy. If you can't shrug off a few puns, you're going to struggle through life.

Besides, this thread has put me in a really good mood, so it's more valuable than another polarised debate thread...to me at least.

Is it possible to take schools for granted?

When it gets to the point that you develop a desire to do what you want to do, rather than what someone else tells you, textbooks aren't going to do you any good.

Mind if I explain something? The point of education is to teach. That is, no matter which way you look at it, the point right? If education teaches you nothing, it is pointless.

If education allows you to pass through the net, or fails to keep your attention, it has failed.

Education should not be about who fails and who passes, it should be about making sure you pass no matter what, and if people don't care about passing then they should have been taught why this is a bad attitude.

Well at my school if your good you get no credit and are ignored if your bad and do one good thing ONE! you get the same praise as jesus did.
Its stupid and even then you get the same grades as some one who does work while if you just pick on people and swear at the teacher you still get better praise then the people who do work good.
Its this pussy footed education system.
So if this happens in schools they take it for granted and be intorable little shits and Now we have vivos so there bribing us to be good (Although to no supprise the bad kids have over 1000 already)

So you also work in "publicly funded daycare?" :)

In the thousands/millions of years we've been on this planet (depending on who you talk to), kids haven't changed a bit. It's parents that are different. Kids will always try to get away with as little effort as possible, learning as little as possible, and obeying as few rules as possible. The difference is that more and more parents are letting them.
