when are you not new anymore?
When someone says you're not new.
(You're still new.)
keep me in mind next time your thinking about telling someone their not new anymore.
But you'll always be newer than me.
The trick is someone new(er than you) telling you you're not new.

I have only been around for a few days and I haven't said much but so far people have been nice to me.

Aha!
Another chance to be caringly hating!

You are so easily confused that you lose on the first part of Simon Says!

You are now initiated into the small clan of those who have been insulted in this thread.
And welcome to the site!

Some new comers really need to read the posting rules before unleashing their half assed threads. That said im usually rather nice or just completely ignore the worst of those threads. Yes some people get annoyed by new comers i dont think we abuse them though, either way you have to be initiated in any new community theres nothing wrong with a little fun here and there.

EDIT: your poll sucks!
Pretty much this, in every form. The Forum Guidelines aren't there just to look good.

Also, I agree about the crappy poll. A simple 'yes', 'no', or 'indifferent' instead would be nice.

I shall not vote. >:l

Before I joined I didn't do much of anything but watch Zero Punctuation, and look at the latest content. After a while I just decided to join out of boredom, and the rest is history.

I'm glad I did. Met some interesting people, had hilarious discussions. I love this place. Best thing I did out of boredom.

All of that happened only a few days after I joined, so I wouldn't say people here are cruel to newcomers. Only if they're 'tards, then unleash Hell.

I however did vote....i'm on the fence :)

But I agree. I actually joined in a similar way. And I agree that we aren't cruel to newcomers, just 'tards.

NoMoreSanity, i've asked this before, but is an unrelated thread really the place for you to play out a personal drama? Given that the previous two threads I asked you to not do this in were promptly locked, and that you have even recieved a probabtion for your tendency to waver into the personal spectrum with your comments... Can you see that it's obviously dissaproved of? The evidence is right there, i'm not doing this to be a grumpy bastard. The reason i'm asking you to stop is i'd hate to see another thread, one i'm interested in, locked.

Apologies for targeting you, you're really not the only one. Shame on you all.

And to me, just about all of you are new. So you could count me as a mean old bastard if you wanted.

Hm...you're still new enough for this to be justifiable welcoming abuse.

People were never mean to me in here. In fact, this place quickly became my favourite forum due to the community being so nice.

But then again, I did what most newcomers apparently don't do: I read the rules. I try to think before posting and I happen to have my own internal Grammar Nazi. This seems to take care of most of the problems people might have with me...

Yea allot of mean people here, however for ever mean person theres 5 awesome people.
I tend to agree with this. The community really isn't that bad, especially in comparison to other boards that I've been to (most notably gfaqs).

The worst I've ever gotten here was:

1. A bad run in with Max when I first joined. But he apologized so quickly; we became 'friends' shortly afterwart
2. A moderation for 'lol'. But I was only warned, nothing more.

I'm glad to hear that you are a new smart guy!
But you know what's coming, right?

It's good that you have a space image for an avatar, as it accurately depicts the vast emptiness in your cranium that is a shared condition with so much of the void.

I will attempt to be as nice as I can to newcomers. Some are "trolls" as we call them, who spam the forums. Some are people unfamiliar with the forum etiquette we have here and so I try and inform those people so they can become contributing members of the community.

I don't think we are mean to new users perse. I think we are exclusive though. Any new user comes onto the Escapist, sees a bunch of people chatting completely off topic about the various ways they will disembowel corpses. While this is a fun and friendly thing for a couple of user buddies to do, it is intimidating for someone new to come it on. In addition to the community itself being hard to join in, there are other community members who actively make it more difficult to feel welcome. People being search button advocates to a degree where its pretty much all they post any more. People who will overtly mock you and call you a troll just for making a few spelling mistakes or hitting enter too early (I think this was fixed when Escapist Forums 2.0 came around).

Here's the deal: as fun as it can be, we need to make sure that our conversations don't clog the threads with their derailment. This can be as simple as employing *snips* to avoid quote storms or even posting something valid to the topic alongside your friendly banter. The main problem as I see it isn't that we're intentionally hostile its that we're unintentionally too tightly knit of a community.

Why thank you. Can I insult you back now?

Apparently your avatar shows that you advanced age has made you regress to the level of a child. All those bright colour must be so pretty and amazing to you.

I think I like this game of Insult Posting. Shall we go for rhyming insults next? :)

I don't know. I think if we did, Ultra would come back and fuss.
:-S
Make a game out of it!
I'm just doing it here for the people who said they've never been fussed at/made fun of for being new.
Community service, if you will.
