Nothing compared to gamefaqs where if you don't have each boards stickys and respective memes memorised you get crucified by the testicles. "Use the search bar" gets kind of annoying though when you DO use the search bar and the other topics about the subject are asking a radically different question from yours but that's douche-baggery to everyone not just newcomers.

Being a newcomer myself, and not having started any threads yet, I have no idea whether people are mean to me or not.

I'm quite new and I don't think anyone has been particularly mean to me, but I don't think I've given anyone reason to be.

Only if they don't take the time to check spelling and grammar.
Which seems to happen very often nowadays. Makes the forums look untidy *grumble*

I don't like new people who don't act it, and by that I mean realise they are ignorant of what they are new to.
As for being new here, I am wary of them. I have yet to make a thread myself though, nor did anyone really notice me when I came here, but my starting posts were just to comment on Unforgotten Realms and ZP.

I'm new here, and I don't feel like I've been mistreated. Of course, I haven't opened any new threads (maybe because I'm too lazy to use the search bar ;)) but believe me, there are forums with MUCH more hostile climes than this one. Aside from the eternal search bar wars, this is one the friendlier forums I've seen.

When I first joined, some of the first stuff I read was a thread about how the poll was going downhill, and a group of people yelling about religion. Not much has changed, really. I'm beginning to think that it's been like this since the site was created, and everyone who's been on here for a long time has the more rose-tinted nostalgia goggles I've ever seen...

Of course, since I joined, I've been more or less universally ignored by everything, which I guess is a blessing and a curse.

We are mean to a lot of newcomers, most people just want to feel powerful
which is desperately sad. If putting people down on a forum makes you feel powerful because IRL you are a pansy little ***** that is afraid of life in general, you should seek counseling and get a life.
my caveat to that is that if people being mean to you on a forum hurts your feelings to the point that you stop posting, then you need to Suck It Up You Pansy *****!!!! stop being such a whiny little baby and deal with it. people are mean and suck sometimes. accept it as part of the risk.

Awww, but we both like pears and dislike dark, brooding pseudo-intellectuals brimming with poor attempts at non-sequitor wit...

Hmm.

Ok, I have contacted my board of advisers (aka me) and we (I) have decided that we (I) only half hate you.

This is a glorious moment, as we (I) can never get to agree with each other (myself). Enjoy it, for it is fleeting.

Well I'd say a few of our more experienced members post without thinking as well. The only difference is we say 'lol wtf' when it's a familiar face but crack down when it's someone with a low post count.

Such is the way of the internet though, we're alot better than many places too.

Like all online forums and communities, long established members are mean to new members who act like idiots or post troll threads. The majority of new users who actually add something useful will recieve a "welcome to the Escapist" after their first post.

Well, not all of us, and those who are are usually being mean since the newcomer hasn't done one or more of the following:
- Followed the guidelines (often because they didn't care to read them)
- Used somewhat acceptable grammar and spelling
- Made a flame-free and discussion-worthy post/thread.

But we should do our utmost to make newcomers aware of the guidelines (or the search button) in a polite and friendly manner, instead of verbally abuse them for having the nerve of not being flawless.
