"My religion forbids it"
Yeah, but it's quite keen on taking others blood.....

On a serious note, I'm too young, but I would.

...you a vampire???

because the only possible explanation is that you cant donate because you would convert a bunch of people who are not worthy... and taking others blood? obviously for consumption

Yes, I gave blood a few days ago actually.
As did I. Although, since I'm O+, I have to give a double-red cell thing and for some reason, it makes a 200lbs guy like me a little light-headed...
I did that once (double red) they didn't tell me it made you cold, don't get light headed tho so its a plus.
I didn't get too cold, but then again, that might have to do with the fact that the room was essentially broiling. I wasn't really paying too much attention to what the double red does, so if anyone here is an RD or MD or some other medical professional, I'm all ears :)

I'm a diabetic and not allowed to give blood here in Sweden. Would if I could though.

I feel bad that I don't but I'm ill a lot and every time they take blood I inevitably go woosy or pass out (I'm very thin).

I'm scared of needles, so... no.

They can harvest my delicious organs when I'm dead, but no way in hell is anyone gonna poke me with needles unless it's absolutely necessary.
Doesn't saving somebody's life count as "absolutely necessary"? You seem to be implying that you will do it provided it's absolutely necessary, but in that case, when is it absolutely necessary?

I do. The adverts tell me it saves lives. This makes me feel special. It's like doing something constructive, but faster, and you also get free biscuits.

No. I have all kinds of fear of needles, seeing my own blood, stuff like that. I'd never be able to do it. Just seeing other people doing it and thinking about doing it myself makes me nauseous.

My organs will be available after my death, but I have never donated blood. I'm not so altruistic to go out of my way for it. If it were some sort of trade, e.g. you can't reveive blood unless you donated yourself (or never got the chance), then I would happily share.

I did it once and spent the rest of the day on my back with my legs raised. I don't have the time to be able to do that very often.

I won't give blood, but that's not because I don't want to. It's just that I get scared of needles, I have a real fear of people sticking a needle in me. Weird thing about me is that I'm a sadist, but I hate pain in myself.

Anyhow, I am an organ donor, so it's not too bad. But I won't donate blood. If they can find a way of doing it without needles though, that isn't painful, then sure, I'll do that, and bone marrow too :D. May as well give something back, right?

That really bugs me as well. Can't they just test the blood, and if t's okay they give it to somebody who needs it?
The stupid thing is, they're going to test it anyways. They have to test it anyways, they can't just take your word for it... In fact, over here at least, they usually draw a little bit extra to a different tiny-blood-bag-thing, for the sole purpose of testing.

So yeah, that's the only thing that bothers me about it.

That said, yes I do. I donate blood when I can. Got a donor's card and everything.

I would donate (or, more likely, sell) blood and/or plasma, but I can't because I have a permanent geographical deferral.

P.S. I worked in a blood/tissue bank for 5 years, so I learned more about the business than anyone probably wants to know. It's really quite fascinating, and I think it's worth doing. Plus, there's no need to resign yourself to a fear of needles. It can be overcome.

Actually, I'm kind of a masochist (not sexually), so I like it when they stick the needle into me.

The next time I go there, I'm going to ask them if they draw blood on commission. What I mean is, if I pay for the work and the material used, could they draw some of my blood for me to take home and drink? (Of course I wouldn't drink it all in one go; I'm aware of the risk of diabetes that entails.)

You can't get diabetes from drinking blood. Diabetes is a failure of your pancreas to produce proper amounts of insulin in a timely fashion. It's caused by a number of things, but not blood. You'd probably be healthier if you drank blood instead of, say, soda. Er, assuming said blood was not contaminated, though. Them pathogens are nasty.

And, no, they won't draw blood for you to take home and drink. The liability should they get caught would be unbelievable.

I read in a book that you can get it from doing the vampire stuff, but I am aware that books can be wrong, so I'm wondering if you're sure that drinking blood can't give you diabetes, or if you just hadn't heard about that before.

I have hemachromatosis, so it's mandatory for me if I plan on having a liver past 60. However I have yet to donate for the first time.
