yeah, i say no to that. the chance that it will fuck everything up between you two is to high (for me anyway) to attempt. but in the end, its your call. you know what exactly the relationship is, and presumably you know her well enough to guess how she'd react.

One question: will you be drinking while you're socialising with your friend? because even if you decided not to ask when in the cold, rational light of day, you might overrule your own good judgement after you've had a few.

I can see why it would be a tempting idea mate but... I reckon if you can resist you should do so. There's potential here to introduce no small amount of awkwardness into a perfectly good friendship, which would be a shame. Really, if you're already in the friend zone, it's too late for anything more - a position I sympathise with greatly my friend.

My thoughts on romance are that Davy Jones had the right approach. Lock heart away, avoid the whole wretched emotional rollercoaster.

Do it as a cheeky joke. I'm sure she'll understand, and then either jokingly comply or not.

As long as you do it jokingly, go for it! You'd be surprised. Also, I saw somewhere a quote, saying "We regret the things we never did more than the things we did" or something like that.

My birthday is next week and I'm getting old :(

Anyways, I'm going to be spending time with a female friend that knows I like her. What's between us is complicated and I'm not going to get into it here.

I'll just say that were pretty good friends, and I spent the day with her last week on what some people would call a date, but wasn't really.

I'm thinking about jokingly asking her for a kiss. I'm pretty sure she'll say no, but it's still worth a shot and I can play it off as being innocent yet still flirty.

Good idea, terrible idea?

Anybody done something like it before?

Edit: Added more detail
If you like her, don't "jokingly" ask for it. Do it entirely seriously.

I did a similar thing with my current girlfriend. The conversation went like this:

Me: So yeah, merry christmas. Cya later!
Her: Bye!
Me: Hey, uh, can I have a kiss goodbye.
Her: Umm..I've never kissed before. *Totally stunned that I asked*
Me: Just a peck is all.
*Our first kiss happens*
Her: I really like you. *Is totally blushing as she gets on the bus*
Me: I like you, too. *Is totally worried that she didn't like me more than a friend*

After we did that, we found out we totally liked one another and got together. Who knows, maybe that girl feels the same about you. Take a chance.

EDIT: Whatever you do, don't be all like "But it's my birthday!" because that will just pressure her.

Go for it with all confidence, don't even let a hint of doubt creep in. If she laughs, its a joke and you're in a comedy, if she goes for it its a romance, if she slaps the shit out of you apply for a tragedy license.

How about you drop the 'joking' part and just ask her out? Turn one of your 'non-dates' into an actual date?

In my experience, being coy and reserved more often than not leads to missed opportunities. Put your cards on the table and just go for it. If you don't get the answer you want then it'll hurt, aye, but you'll get over it, and more importantly you've nothing to regret. Can't say the same the other way.

What's the worst that could happen?
You lose a friend because she is tired of you not understanding she doesn't like you that way.
You hear that?
That's the sound a point makes as it sails straight over your head.
I hate having to explain a joke, so here. I'll let TvTropes do it for me.
