You are all talking about how Altair's bloodline ended up in these places, but have any of you considered it may have nothing to do with bloodline.
Notice the fact that Altair, Ezio and Desmond all look identical, and all have the same scar on the lip. Also notice that Ezio was referred to as Desmond at the end of AC II.
Perhaps Altair/Ezio/Desmond is an anomaly similar to Neo in The Matrix, or perhaps he is always created to be in existence, only one at any given time, but to be there, watching over the Templars without knowledge of his purpose.

As much as I liked Ezio, and I really liked Ezio, he's getting old. I think we're going to get a new guy or Desmond.

The entire series (which is supposedly a trilogy) has been pointing towards Desmond as being the main protagonist of no. 3.

Besides, after the renaissance, they've actually restricted what they can do with the franchise. Going further back in time means losing all the fancy new toys you got in ACII, and the series would have to revert back to be even more basic than ACI, tech-wise. When they move to modern-day, they are potentially trapped into becoming a more outdoors splinter cell type game.

You probably shouldn't believe that - Ubisoft has already said no ninjas, it would be cliché.

But yeah, I think AC3 should be Desmond's game. Now we've seen that guns aren't an instant kill in AC: Brotherhood (at least when you've been shot) it's fair to assume we can see Desmond with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. Also, to anyone who believs Egypt/Russia, it's just for the comics, Ubisoft has already said that.

Minerva knew Desmond would use the Animus, she used that to give him the information to save the world.

Ignoring all of my rationality that it will be with Desmond perhaps with the odd bleeding effect flashback I would like it to be set in the 1700's, perhaps in 1707 with the forming of Britain where you perhaps play as a Scot? Tartan hood? Think about it, the forming of the country that would help create the modern world, it's interesting.

American revolution would also be interesting, although controversial, seeing as Washington was confirmed to be a Templar.

I am hoping for ACIII to be set in 18th Century France, there are certainly enough colorful characters in and around Versaille at the outbreak of the Seven Year War to give a nice set of supporting characters. Plus, Paris and the Versailles as two of the locations? Yes, please. (I also want to see Mme Jean De Pompadour in a computer game...)

I still think that the company is going to do what they said they were going to do since the beginning, by which mean the third game will take part during the future(at the time it was said) by which they mean 2012 and playing as Desmond. Unless they can't find a way to make it work I think that they will keep that plan.
I do hope they stop using Ezio mostly because I don't know what more they could add and I want to move through a different environment. I am kind of curious about the importance of the short part where Desmond saw an older Ezio at what was Desmond's hideout though(I can't spell it, something like Montriggioni).

Sooner or later Desmond is going to have to come out of the lab and kick the ass that has been set on his plate for real. I haven't played Brotherhood, but I still know they have to get to it eventually

No. I like him, but he's nearly 50 and his story is done.

New place, new time period, new character. The developers have said that numbers are reserved for these anyway, which is why all the spin-offs feature Ezio or Altair.

Ah.... The joys of actually "knowing" what will be in AC3. Too bad I live with an NDA!
It's kind of funny you saying that and then looking at your avatar xD

Still, I know there's a few game developers on here.

Ezio is an old man now, so he should not be the protagonist.

Besides, he CAN'T be; Assassin's Creed [one] and its spinoffs were all about Altair. Assassin's Creed II and its spinoffs are all about Ezio. Therefore, Assassin's Creed III and its spinoffs will introduce a new protagonist. QED.

So much win in this idea right here.

Me thinks that Desmondo is going to be the protagonist for AC 3. I mean considering the ending of Brotherhood, why would we be going back into the Animus?
