When in doubt it's a guy. I mean if you ask then and they say they are a girl and you think they could be a girl, you are probably right. If things don't add up just assume guy.

I sometimes assume it's a girl, mostly assume it's a guy. I'll decide on the way they type and the way I'm feeling, but it really doesn't matter.

Don't really ask unless they are in my guild and we are talking about a subject where it would matter, with PUGs it doesn't really matter what the hell you are as long as you can play.

I only play male toons, but if it's not an MMO and I'm playing a female character I'm not going to care.

I always assume it's a man. I don't lose anything since I'll probably not play with that person again, and it's not like women and men play MMOs differently enough to notice.

I choose my avatar on looks or "makes sense" factors. No female warriors for me, but I refure to play a male Mesmer in GW.

I usually play as guys in games. Me playing, wanting to be a girl just doesn't make sense to me.

And I usually just assume its a guy unless proven otherwise. But I really dont care at the end of the day.

My friend is an internet transvestite. He said "If I am going to stare at an ass all day it might as well be a nice ass." That seems like pretty sound logic to me.
There are also a lot of male Escapists with female avatars; what is your response to them?

Avatars don't usually look anything like players so it seems dumb to draw conclusions based on what a person's avatar looks like.

The reason I have a girl avatar is because if I'm gonna be following her around for all those hours, I better be looking at something nice.
EXACTLY! :p

It's less likely that guys will make female avatars (especially if they have to be macho and overcompensate) but seeing as how the ratio of female game characters to males is not as big as the real gap between female and male gamers, a large number of female avatars must be played by dudes. Therefor, you should always assume that any given person is a dude until proved otherwise or just look at everyone in a gender neutral way.

Asking gender is not such a bad question with people these days, but the others obviously crossed the line.

I've encountered this a fair bit as a female game player, and it ticks me of a tad.

If I have a female avatar on a MMORPG, every idiot I run into immediately asks me if I am really a girl If I am hot, and would I use my mic to cyber... *sigh*
^This, I hated. Absolutely hated. That's why I like being anonymous.

This would happen to me almost anywhere I went, even XBox Live and PSN. It disgusts me to no end. First I have to speak into the mic to confirm I am a girl otherwise they won't shut teh fuck up, then once I spoke they wouldn't shut up either.

Some guys just do that to screw with people. Retarded 12-year-olds will hit on anything humanoid with a slight chest bulge, even when it's pointing a giant flaming sword at them and covered in inch-thick armor. The sadists of the world turn their characters female to do a little trolling. It's the way of the world. And I'm sorry 'bout your situation. I don't like talking to people normally, but hitting on me? Oh god no.

I play a few games where I get bugged all the time...

MMORPG: Silkroad Online
Fable 2
Halo but only the multiplayer

i generally like to play as the female character... its just me... but yeah, occasionally I like to see if the game play is any different/better as a man, or play as a man if there is no other option. I dont let a little thing like playing a guy get in the way of a good gaming experience...

How do you judge endowment in a game like that?

I tend to switch up between male and female avatars, depending on game and on-the-spot aesthetic sense (my City of Heroes characters are pretty evenly split, my WoW characters are overwhelmingly female).

As for other people...I don't know, I never really think about it. I'd probably say that it's twofold. If a person has a female avatar, I treat their character as female. It just simplifies my thought processes, and there's honestly little difference in how I act; I'm less inclined to get snarky or annoyed towards female characters, perhaps, but otherwise I typically try to be polite and helpful to anyone.

On the other hand, I make no assumptions about them in real life until they bring up stuff outside the game. This can sometimes lead to weird thought processes, if I'm chatting up a guy with a female avatar and thinking of them as both at the same time, but I'm used to it by now. I rarely see the opposite, though; I've never spoken with a male character who I knew for sure was being played by a woman. Considering I've had weirdos ask me if I wanted to cyber, though, I think I can guess the reason why...

File me under "Who cares?"

I've played WoW as a female avatar and not once did anyone ever hit on me. They may have been just a tad nicer to me occasionally, but thats it. I've never felt a strong difference between my male and female characters.

I play them just because female avatars sometimes look better than their male counterparts. Not as in "hotness" but as in...casting stances/attack animations.
