I've encountered this a fair bit as a female game player, and it ticks me of a tad.

If I have a female avatar on a MMORPG, every idiot I run into immediately asks me if I am really a girl If I am hot, and would I use my mic to cyber... *sigh*

My queastion is, are there really that many guys who play as female avatars, and why do you do it? Curiousity about the motivation...

^This, I hated. Absolutely hated. That's why I like being anonymous.

This would happen to me almost anywhere I went, even XBox Live and PSN. It disgusts me to no end. First I have to speak into the mic to confirm I am a girl otherwise they won't shut teh fuck up, then once I spoke they wouldn't shut up either.

No thank you. I did more than enough during the Great Habbo Raid and have been disgusted with it ever since.

My working rule is this: if they're playing a girl, refer to them as "she". Treat everyone the same regardless. Most of the time, it works. Since my wife and I both play WoW, and have both male and female characters, we know that guys aren't all playing, and not all guy characters are guys any more than all girls are. If you don't know the player, then pretend you're on an RP realm and call them by gender. (PS, If the Blood Elf hitting on me would cut it out, I'd appreciate it.)

Second Life and IMVU are rife with it too...

Back when I played FFXI, it was pretty well known that all of the Mithras (the all female race) were played by males. I don't think I ever ran into a real female playing a Mithra.

I personally always play males, to avoid the invitations to cyber and whatnot.

Generally I assume that it's a girl but then the women in RPG's are typically designed to appease the male fantasy so I'm kind of stuck between the two.
To be fair though in my lifetime I have spent a very small amount of time on MMORPGS and much prefer the online shooter fix like of course my beloved Halo 3 and so whenever I hear someone die with the female voice naturally I assume it's a female I just shot with my plasma rifle.

Why not? Just because I'm a male with light skin and brown hair in reality does that I can only play as that in games? People can play as orcs, elves, and other creatures but only if it's the same gender?

I see choosing a gender in a game the same as choosing race, skin color, etc. Besides if you're gonna be playing dress up and spending hours looking at the character why not have one thats easy on the eyes XD

This pisses me off too. You get a girl entering a game, and every guy immediately flips out and starts flirting. I mean, hello? You're half-way across the fucking country to this girl, ods are you'll never see her!

Here is what i do ussually.Since i am a male i ALWAYS create a Female character.
Once a Male Idiot comes in and try's to hit on my i reveal my identity and i tell him that he is gay and that he's mom much be really sad about him.
Its not that i am a jerk but it teaches them a lesson.Never Try to hit on someone.

I assume it's a person. Unless the player's gender becomes relevant to the discussion, I make no assumptions about it,nor do I care either way regardless of the avatar's apparent gender.

I voted for "Who cares?".

I try not to make any assumptions about people, that goes for online in games as well. Whether the avatar or player is male or female, I'll just treat them the same, like a person.

As for the question of personally playing as someone of the opposite gender, my stance is basically just "Why not?" As has been previously stated, many of us often play as characters of other ages, skin colours, or even species so why not other genders as well? Although I've never played any MMOGs with a female main character (mostly due to, as you say, all the unwanted attention it generates), my ratio on singleplayer RPGs and the like is basically 50/50 and I've only ever done a complete playthrough of Mass Effect with a female Sheperd (Jennifer Hale is a much better voice actor than whoever does the male Sheperd).

Hell, I'll chose the girl character built if the character model is cool.

To me it doesn't matter
Same her. If the female characters look better I play as a female.

I kinda like the coolness around female avatars.

But yeah I get that too... =/

OH and I'm a guy, and I do not ask others about that if I see one.

Swap 'MMORPG' for 'xBox Live', and yeah.... that's my experience, too. Even to the point of being kicked from games because I told the pervert where to go.
Why do I never meet any normal people I can actually have a decent time playing with online?!

/rage.

i make a lot of female charactors and i rarely have that problem, but i play Co, formerly CoH, Requiem an DDO now an then, and when i see a female avi ingame, my frist is generaly, ' nice job on the costume' or if we'er teamed,'how useful are they'
