I always though of Freedom of Speech as a way for people to say I disagree with said Legislation, and this is why. Not for people to call each other pricks or what not and say I can say whatever I want.
exactly. political dissidence without consequences is what the first amendment is about. being able to gather together and say we dont like this we want things to be different. not "lets kill the president." all of the amendments have limits. for example, the right to bear arms excludes nuclear weapons and other such things (also technically could be interpreted to mean that no one is allowed to have weapons anymore, considering there is not real need for "a well regulated milita"

One point however, if America had banned everyone who'd been rude or wished Bush dead, America would have no tourist industry, having banned most of the world.

whether it's right or wrong, it's bad press for Obama to be seen acting like this over a petty email, even tho as I understand it, it's people under him doing it all of course.

Perhaps don't just retract it, but ask for a simple apology for his drunken actions and then retract the ban.

In my opinion - that's not fair. It's not about freedom of speech, because this freedom doesn't count when you hurt someone with words, it's about equality. If I go right to someone in New York and tell him that he is a "(insert nasty word here)", I might get a fist into my face, but I am still allowed to be in the United States.

However giving the finger to a cop, totally legal, no seriously a guy did that to every cop he saw and he never got in trouble.
And I've personally known and witnessed people being arrested for the same exact thing.
The police has the legal power to arrest people for it, but the question (for them) is whether or not it's worth their time.

I've been talking about this with some mates and they all said the same thing; why would he WANT to go to America?

All kidding(?) aside, it was a bit of a harsh punishment for sending an angry email. And he was drunk. And he apologised after and said it was a joke.
Harsh punishment?

It's not his own country! It is a PRIVILEGE to visit a country that you are not a citizen of. It's like being told:

"you can no longer enter that house"

It's not your house! You had no right nor even reason to go in there.
Fair point. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Cough Guantanimo cough... America does torture, they just dont tell us all of what they do, and when they do, its usually gets buried and forgotten about. Thats not crazy hippy speech, thats the facts. SO yes, I AM accusing America of torture, and Id say its pretty justified considering theres PROOF America does. Also, im aware not everywhere has free speech, but from the news story, they say he was threatening, not that he explictly threatened the life of the president. Aparently he called him a prick, and while not everyone ahs free speech, a country that is saturated with its own pride about free speech and all that shit to "ban" someone for life for writing an email while drunk saying somthing along the lines of, "you suck president, your a prick". Oh and I did research that thing about the shoe throwing, the Iraq government did lock him up, but do you honestly think us Americans, who pretty much took over their country by the way, didnt have anything to do with that?

This is a reply to reachforthesky, the quote buttom just isnt working

No its ridiculous. seems to be a bit of abuse of power. I might change my mind if I read the letter but I don't think its likely.

Ummmm...how come this specific email got attention? Im sure lots of ppl would like to send hate mail to Barack Obama (just like all leaders), its just that this kid actually got a hold of his email address, and actually did it. Considering he was drunk, it may not actually be that hard, most ppl probably just think its a stupid idea to go through with such pointless urges.

And what right does the US government have in banning a Britt, who sent an email from the UK?

PS: i'm using Google Chrome Spellcheck, and apparently "Barack" is not a word in the English dictionary, but many other famous Non-English names are. (Mao Zedong, Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro etc.). Obama is still acceptable tho.

being an american, i can safely say that the bill of rights is meaning less and less these days. seriously, if i were the president, i would've gotten all my best men to make the most awesome comeback ever... or said something about his mom, either way works.

Just because you're an American doesn't mean you have any idea of what the current situation of the Bill of Rights is at the moment.

Especially since I'm doubting you've ever had your rights violated or knew anybody who did, considering cops and law enforcement as well as the courts themselves have always been attacked for those types of things, even if they're baseless claims.

Of course it's not fair, but I still find this hilarious.

Note that just becuase he is a British citizen, does not mean he has diplomatic immunity. All that occurs is that he isn't allowed to go to America; the American government - and I believe any government - can have full control over who goes in or out, if it's an individualized case.

One of my friends tried to get across the border. They stopped them, and found a roach. Had no weed in it. Banned for life.

Let Me Fix This:

Lol He`s American, He has no freedom of speech.
Canadian detected.

(lives next door to USA, has no idea about the UK but thinks because we share a monarch there is any kind of kinship now)
For the record I`m a Canadian who belongs to a British family. Although also for the record England is a rather nice place, but I don`t want to live there anymore than I would the states.

PS - You and your Clever little comment can fuck off.

That was pretty funny, but the Secret Service doesn't screw around, if you send a death threat to the President you'll get raided by the FBI or Secret Service within 20 minutes...
