I'll take both? I got a headstart due to "giftedness" then I lost it.

I clawed my back up though.

Wow close vote (59-60 in favor of gifted when I voted).

Being gifted can be more of a crutch than a gift. Sure you'll be good at that one thing (or set of things) but you can't do everything. Someday you'll run into that thing you can't do and be utterly defeated by this new thing that you don't comprehend.

Whereas if you are intelligent it'll be a lifetime uphill struggle. But you'll be learning along the way so each new thing makes you more capable. Ah I lost what I was thinking, so hopefully you reading this know what i meant.

Personally, I'd rather be hard working and a good person without an inflated ego, than either of the two.

It doesn't matter how high your IQ is. If you're still a lazy twat who nobody likes, at the end of the day, you're going to be miserable.

One of the dumbest people I know is a nurse. I doubt many people with higher IQs could say they were doing something even nearly as beneficial with their lives.

I agree. I would even argue that hard work makes you appreciate things more and makes you a better person than if you just have natural talent or don't live up to your full potential...

Essentially what he is asking is:

Would you rather be given an incredibly large potential to be born with, or would you be given a small bit of potential that could be increased through hard work.

The former doesn't teach you to motivate yourself, and you become very lazy.
The latter is a constant battle to improve yourself and requires a lot of work to catch up; however, you can work hard and motivate yourself to do better if you succeed.

I choose the latter because I am the former.

Intelligence. Through diligence you can become talented at something, but you cannot become intelligent.
Conversely you cannot become gifted.

For me it all depends on the level of gifted or intelligent we are talking about. Mozart gifted? Einstein intelligent?

If it was either of these I would pick gifted. While hard work builds character it also sucks. I would rather go though lift gifted as Mozart at say being an artist or a musician.

The idea of a head start is nice as long as you don't fall into the cockiness pit if you're gifted which can happen

Exactly, you are smart enough to know that the alternative is better, but you don't have the motivation to actually become it.

Someone on the other side will notice how smart you are, an envy you since you seemingly don't have to work for it, and prove it by never doing so :p

Some gifts are more prized than others.

Unfortunately, I am wasting mine. It's also the single worst gift you can have to waste. :(

I dunno, I think intelligence should be held in much higher regard as it is often something one needs to work at to attain. But being gifted naturally may mean you could do something that most people could not even learn with practice, and was fairly unique to you.

Good thing I'm both I suppose.

That is exactly it. I'm really trying to use my potential now, but I was so lazy the past two years I've spend the evening going through my notes that I kept jumbled up in a folder from last year. I'm trying to reteach myself and learn everything I can this year. School structure is just so slow and limiting that I can't find the time to actively pursue a science and math track.

What really screwed me over was making friends. My personality is hit or miss, but apparently I'm extremely influential and comedic when you enjoy my company. Likewise I really enjoy cult followings (things such as robot chicken, other examples escape) which I tend to generate as well. I've found that people will either despise me or like me when they first meet me.

Anyhow, I'm rambling. Basically I got distracted by a social aspect of my life and became lazy.

I would say that I'm gifted with understanding. I'm almost always able to grasp any concept or piece together information to form my own opinions very effectively. The problem is that I cannot ever be wrong, which I'm actually only now discovering. I always see those subtle patterns no one else finds. This is partly what makes me so odd. My oddities must intrigue people.

Sorry if I've rambled, I've just been reflecting over memories as I transferred to my new school. I've scrapped my social life in favor of a more productive, intelligent one. I've only now began to wonder exactly what made me popular at my last school.

I am intelligent, and it has never brought me any joy. So I'd rather be gifted.
It seems like you have a drive to be intelligent, but you have just failed to apply it. Once you learn to apply your work and intelligence, then you will be more satisfied.

What's the fun if you don't have to work for anything? I love the thrill of trying and failing at something over and over till it finally clicks and I can do it.

I don't need to choose. I was born a very Intelligent person, and in today's society of 'everyone else that you meet is generally a retard', I'm gifted to not be included in the populational statistic.

Seriously, Nearly everyone I meet is a total and complete idiot. I've only met three people in my life that I can safty declare 'Intelligent".

Maybe It's because my I.Q. is 210...
I hate you... you... clever... bastard...
Seriously, 210!
That said, I've been following a few of your posts and you say you do a lot of IQ tests in your free time. This tends to make you have a much better performance in these tests so its not a wholly accurate representation of your IQ. Not that I doubt you, oh masterful being of might, I have no doubt it is possible that genetics can throw out such a gifted individual.
I feel worried that you are elitist in your thoughts in that you claim to have only met 3 intelligent people, your standards may be a bit high. If it were true I would be worried what kind of neihbourhood the boy wonder was growing up in.
I like to think that there are different types of intelligence. For example there is a boy at my school who is gifted academically in all areas, has a high opinion of himself but is socially retarded. I see this as somewhere intelligence falls down because clearly he isn't intelligent or gifted enough to understand basic principles of human interaction (and yet still wants to go into politics, sigh). So what I'm saying is would you consider the idea that intelligence has other ways it can manifest itself other than things that can be tested in an I.Q. test? I would recommend a book by Tony Buzan on the idea should you care enough, though I can't remember (with my puny mind) the name.

(exudes jealousy)

PS. whats a million times a million? no cheating! (just testing, lol, I'm only doubtful because nobody that intelligent could like anime, as I assume from your avatar)

Also, I am 17 and moderately gifted, though this generally only extends to maths, chemistry and physics, which basically means I don't have to try to understand them, I just get it. I think if I weren't raised better I would view the world through the cold eyes of logic alone and would be promptly disenchanted with life and the way I can still dabble in this is with philosophy.

I'm sick of being the smart guy. I stopped working and then everyone freaks out when my grades drop. I DON'T CARE! My dad and teachers get pissed because they all wanted me to go to some great college, but I just don't care anymore...

I'd rather be intelligent as those who are gifted are more likely to be exploited somehow.
