I really don't think any of those bands deserve the title of best band. Slayer is possibly the only one I'd think about, but I don't find them good enough to consider a 'best'. I really don't know what to name best metal band there alot of decent ones out there.

Notable ones I can think of are Sepultura, Morbid Angel, Nasum, In Flames and Decapitated. Also Anthrax, Meshuggah and Pantera should be mentioned. However, I wouldn't know which to put at the top of the list. The band listed in the poll are all quite... old school and seem to be more fan service and remenisence than anything else. For the record I found black sabbath far to soft to really enjoy if I was in a metal mood. I'd consider them more hard rock tha anything else.
Thats your opinion especially if you say Black Sabbath is soft, fuckin most powerful riffs ever came from Sabbath. I think you mean slow and what you think is metal and not is also opinion. Alot of people say Iron Maiden and Metallica is hard rock and Led Zeppelin is metal.

I reckon all these new metal bands make weak songs compared to the classics, you hear the most epic songs ever made from the old bands.

I can say without doubt, that the greatest metal band ever is lamb of god. This is not a subjective opinion, it is fact. Many scientifically conducted studies that were peer reviewed by many intelligent scientists and published in journals around the world have all come up with this response. If you disagree, you are wrong. I'm sorry, but you'll have to live with it.
Hehehe....they are pretty good though. I love Choke Sermon. By the way, my Kidd 316 sense is tingling. I get the feeling you might soon be called a fag, pussy or something to that effect.
Haha, on any other forum I would have already. Lucky that 99.9% of the escapist can pick up a joke post.

I actually managed to meet them, they were signing at a record store I happened to be near the same day.

Oh, you've got me there. You've used someone else's opinion to represent your own. Ouch!

It never ceases to amaze me how pathetic some internet posters can be.
You're right, because it's entirely impossible that 2 people can have the same opinion about something.

Also, hasn't anyone noticed that this entire thread was started with a poll to find the BEST METAL BAND?! Explain how people are supposed to respond on here by mentioning bands they think deserve to be the best metal band without sounding 'elitist'. Why don't you go crying back to your Arctic Monkeys and The Killers and leave these discussions to people who aren't pussies.
I don't know what gave you the idea that I listen to The Killers and Arctic Monkeys (whoever they may be), but I see what you're trying to get across: Your favorite bands (of which I like quite a few myself, so you might want to stop making groundless assumptions) are the only way to go and everyone else is wrong, and their opinions are below you. Excuse me your majesty, but I believe that's what I meant when I was referring to your post as elitist.
Just because you don't like the bands the OP put in the poll doesn't mean they're not metal. They created the bloody genre and without them, I doubt any of your precious [insert genre] bands (I don't "do" genres, metal is metal.) would exist today. Feel free to enlighten me about the history of whatevergenrethatis and if you can convince me (or anyone) that Black Sabbath had nothing to do with how it came along, please go ahead and convince the earth to stop rotating, because you must be incredibly persuasive.
If you like a certain band better than those in the poll, go ahead and vote "other", and then tell us what band and why, that's fine. Calling everyone who doesn't share your musical taste a pussy is not.
I wasn't actually suggesting that any of the bands in the OP aren't metal, I was originally stating that bands like Disturbed and Korn are not. I have nothing against bands like Black Sabbath (although I hate Motorhead as they are utterly talentless and are also not metal) I just don't really like 'them'. Why the hell should I pay homage to someone else's influences? I like Pantera for Pantera's music, not because they were influenced by Kiss (who suck). I do not for one second believe that my favourite bands are the only way to go, I like lots of different genres of music and rock especially but my point was that in an opinion poll about music (possibly the most opinion based form of media entertainment) that people have every right to post their opinions and ridicule everyone else's - that's what makes music so great. 'I like what I like and what you like sucks' that is everyone's opinion on music no matter how much they argue to the contrary. Deal with it.

Read my posts (they really are rather entertaining) and you'll notice that I have mentioned that I love Lamb of God a fair few times. But I like the idea of your Kidd 316 sense tingling. Touché, sir. Only people who mention their like of 'bum-rape' are pussies and only those who like Korn, Disturbed and/or Slipknot are fags. You're just a dick.

Hey kids, what's the best video game?

- Super Mario Brothers
- Super Mario Brothers 2
- Sonic The Hedgehog
- Daikatana
- Halo 3
- Other

DISCUSS!

You just can't ask what the best video game is with a small list.
Especially when some of the games are horrendous but popular.

Why would music be any different?

I tend to think there are two schools of thought when it comes to heavy metal. On one side, you have the "heavy" people - those who focus on the beat, and the "metal" people - those who focus on the melodies / harmonies. It is difficult to balance both equally in a song, though it can be done. That said, when I can't have both, I lean toward the "heavy."

Listen to Unearth. You can have both.

I'm really surprised no one's mentioned Opeth yet, they're definitely in the running. I'd also have to think about Isis (also awesome prog metal)Admonish to put some melodic black metal in the mix.

I'm hesitant to put symphonic metal on the list since so many fans of of conventional metal are opposed to it, but I must admit I do quite like the genre.

Well lets see, out of the OP's choices I like OLDER Metallica, Iron Maiden, some Black Sabbath and Slayer.

Now other good (insert prefix here)metal(OR insert suffix here) bands.
As I lay dying is pretty good, although I haven't heard any of the newer stuff, last cd I got from them was Shadows are security.
I like As Cities Burn, August Burns Red and All That Remains but I don't know what I'd classify them as.
Also I have heard power metal mentioned a few times, why no love for Dragonforce? :p
I LOVE older In Flames, although I liked their stuff up to Come Clarity which I thought had some epic songs(this is probably gonna get me in trouble with the purist In Flames fans)
I Love Protest the Hero, would I call them Metal, I dunno, I'm leaving that open. Right now I say their Genre is Awesome Guitar Riffs.
Also I keep seeing Thrash Metal mentioned, but no shout out for Psyopus yet?

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting but oh well. Oh also for anyone who wants to call me elitist you can suck it. Anyone that had an intelligent post and mentioned a band I didn't know convinced me to check them out just by being decent fans. So I now have about 5 new metal bands. And slipknot, Korn, and Disturbed are NOT among those five :p

Actually, Unearth is a pretty good example to work from. It certainly has both "heavy" and "metal" elements, but they don't blend. I suppose I meant it in the Reese's Peanut Butter cup sense - where you can't have both at the same time. Newer metal tends to struggle with this more, since newer bands have a wider mix of influences. What winds up happening is a brutal 15 seconds of face-smashing heavy, then 15 seconds of blistering metal, back and forth. It's still good music though - the talent required to play metal is enough to get me to a show, whether it's a garage band or a packed stadium.

Ok, I tried just letting two cents in on how dumb this poll was and holding my peace, but it's not working.

METAL ELITISM GO!

Isis isn't prog metal, they're post metal!
Of course you can have beat and melodies, tons of bands do that.
SO MANY OF YOU ARE WRONG! Argh! Tool isn't metal! KoRn isn't metal! LoG isn't metal, frigging argh.

Where are all the absolutely amazing bands being mentioned? Isis and Enslaved (good on you!) were mentioned. Where's all the fans of Agalloch, the Absence, Warning, Insomnium, Shrum / Acid Bath, Swallow the Sun, Hanging Garden, Anata, Moonsorrow, Primordial, Dark Tranquility, Skyclad, Transcending Bizarre?, local bands, or anything else that hasn't sold twelve billion albums and gets regular radio time? Metal is like every other genre, the best stuff is buried deep below, but it seems no one here is even trying to dig it up. Heck most of the ones I mentioned are well known for metal (especially AB, DT, Skyclad, Agalloch, and StS) and every one's mentioned bands more famous than they.

THIS is why I'm a metal elitist. Every one's another bloody brainwashed sheep.

The guy saying *N'Flames was punk was probably about the closest person to getting my respect in here [Edit: the guy who explained what deathcore was gets a ++]. You're smoothing over a lot of the important bits to make, but you are essentially right. In Flames was once one of melodeath's pioneers (frankly I think DT is way more important than they were, since DT members wrote all of IF's early stuff in addition to their own albums) but they basically went off to what I like to call 'pop metal.' Ugh, I can't even listen to old IF because it makes me think of how sad it is that they turned into that garbage and then I get angry and...

Anyways.

If any one wants to talk to me about metal in a more private setting, I'm sure I could oblige. I could help educate you on a lot of things if you're curious.

Post metal has roots in prog metal. While I admit I've never gone out of my way to contrast post metal, I've always just kinda felt it was a redundant genre. A fault on my part no doubt.

Also, I haven't forgotten groups like DT and Agalloch (well, maybe agalloch) but I didn't want to just make a list post.

Though Meshuggah is another one worth mention that I forgot.

Well, I have to slightly disagree there. Metal has this strange ability to make a new subgenre out of any band that sounds different, yes, and it's just one of those conventions I accept rather than challenge. (I already work myself up over too much already... I think I've provided an apt example of that).

Getting back to topic, though, Isis are a lot more similar to post-rock than prog-anything for me to call them prog. Therefore I call them post-metal and it works.

Fair enough. I wasn't either, just making a big stink over how every band so far is famous. Maybe not full wide-screen public acknowledgement like the poll-bands, but still famous. You're never going to meet a genuine metalhead who hasn't heard of Meshuggah or In Flames or whatever, but I doubt many metalheads have heard of, say, Kalijuge or Decrepitus or Diablo Swing Orchestra or Forefather or etc. Aside: surprised no one's shouted about Wintersun yet.

EDIT:: And why wasn't Judas Priest in the topic? I mean jeez, I can understand the OP not knowing Death but I can only think of three metal bands more influential than Judas.

TSED,

Diablo Swing Orchestra are very good! I always forget they're metal, they aren't the first thing to come to mind when somebody says metal anyway. Has anybody heard of Panzerballet before?

I've never been so happy from some one undermining my point before. Kudos.

I've not, but I'm going to give them a listen. First things first though, I've got a dog who needs walking and a rent that needs paying.
