I'm going for other. The Syphon Filter series quietly kicked arse. But splinter cell is amazing!

Thief, blackjack down. No game has come closer to perfectly achieving stealth gameplay.

As for the others, I've never gotten the same feeling from 3rd person stealth games that I have from 1st person. I have played hitman and splinter cell, and they did work pretty well, but they were missing the feeling of immersion you can only get from 1st person. Deus Ex did have the 1st person perspective, but it was lacking in other areas, such as sound, lighting, enemy AI, and that feeling of vulnerability, all of which thief did awesomazingly.

Fallout 3, there's nothing more satisfying than a sneak critical headshot.

Noone mentioned the Tenchu series so far??? Y'all need to be ashamed of yourselves!
The fact you call that stealth means you should be ashamed of yourself.
Come back when youve actually played it or tell me what exactly is not stealth about the Tenchu series.

The fact that a guard will walk into a bottomless cavern when he sees me, or casually ignore a dead body
So your saying a game that revolves about ninja's not being seen while killing enemies with surprize ambushes is NOT a stealth game due to a minor A.I. short coming?

Thats probably the most ignorant thing ive ever heard!

Hm, for me I think I found MGS: Twin snakes to be really good. Never really got my hands on any better stealth game anyways

I have been enjoying some old stealth games from my collection since lately i have been bored with the whole GOW2 and COD4 multiplayer stuff, and it made me wonder why there are so few of these great genre.

So, what is your favorite stealth game/series to this day,and why? what made it so enjoyable?

mine has to be either the Thief series, or a not well know game called "XIII".
mine is chaos theory, but i've never played the thief series regrettably. by XIII i assume you're talking about the graphic novel-looking FPS? coz that game was immense.

Anything with a silenced pistol immediately becomes a stealth game for me. I would run around in Rainbow Six: Las Vegas with a silenced pistol and the shield so when they finally caught on to where I was shooting from all their machine gun spray was absorbed. Then you just kinda back into a room set some traps, wait for them to get near then BOOM! Then just continue to sneak with a pistol.

Nothing like taking a spray and pray game and turning it into your own stealth game.

I first played Thief: Deadly Shadows back in 2004 and loved it, then finally got around to playing the first two this past Christmas. Like everyone's said, Thief is a lot less linear than most stealth games, and has better stealth.

But what really makes me love Thief more than Hitman or Splinter Cell is that it's freaking scary. All those other games make you feel like an invincible shadow warrior, which to me is a huge wasted opportunity. Making a game where hiding is the main objective is just asking to be scary. Unlike SC or Hitman, your enemies aren't just dumb thugs, there are undead zealots, magical cultists, creepy victorian robots, and goddamn WALKING STATUES.

Wasn't XIII a shooter?

Its a fucking stealth game - good AI is not only crucial, its fundamental.
So your admitting its a stealth game, now? Your example of this so called bad A.I. (apparently turning a genuine stealth-em-up into whatever genre you have in mind for it) is nitpicking on a level Yahtzee could learn a thing or two from. I don't even know why your bringing it up.

I always thought that the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was a good stealth game. There is just enough run-and-gun action combined with LOTS of good sneaking.
