Thief, blackjack down. No game has come closer to perfectly achieving stealth gameplay.

As for the others, I've never gotten the same feeling from 3rd person stealth games that I have from 1st person. I have played hitman and splinter cell, and they did work pretty well, but they were missing the feeling of immersion you can only get from 1st person. Deus Ex did have the 1st person perspective, but it was lacking in other areas, such as sound, lighting, enemy AI, and that feeling of vulnerability, all of which thief did awesomazingly.
Amen to that. What I like in a stealth game is when you have to sneak. Even though Hitman and others are classified as stealth, I don't think of them as. Therefore It's between thief and Splinter Cell. And As Fanboy says, stealth works so much better in 1st person. I did enjoy the Splinter Cell games I've played. But thief was just the perfect stealth game as far as I'm concerned.

i Loved the Hitman series cuz i liked it how you can change into the enemies cloths and drag their bodies out of the scene, then kill the guy who thinks ur protecting him.

I have been enjoying some old stealth games from my collection since lately i have been bored with the whole GOW2 and COD4 multiplayer stuff, and it made me wonder why there are so few of these great genre.

So, what is your favorite stealth game/series to this day,and why? what made it so enjoyable?

mine has to be either the Thief series, or a not well know game called "XIII".
Dues ex is stealth?
And XIII is? Then why do you get about a million guns with a million explosions. In cell shaded glory... Who remember the death online mode?

Splinter Cell is a goddamn abomination. Worst game I've ever played is Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
I've heard you say this a lot, but never give a god damned reason. What's so bad about Splinter Cell? Too much competition for your precious PS exclusive Metal Gear?

I've only played the Xbox game, but Thief does stealth better than anyone else. It just...clicks.

Metal Gear. It made the stealth genre. And I whole-heartedly disagree with Yathzee and others who say the Theif series is the only series to have ever done stealth well.

Quiet, fanboy. Don't bring the console wars into this.

Thief or MGS by far with Thief having the better light/dark mechanics and MGS having the better movement mechanics with both having the same level of genius when it comes to level design and gadgetry.

I >prefer< Thief for stealthy stuff because it's 'medieval'. Both are equally amazing when it comes to stealth.

I'm not. I'm just pointing out that he's a well documented Sony Fanboy, and I really wouldn't be surprised if that was his reasoning after some of the things I've seen him say.

EDIT:Seriously, go back to his post which I quoted. Do you think it's a coincidence that the only stealth games he likes (MGS and Sly Cooper) are both PS Exclusives?

Splinter Cell, especially Chaos Theory. It's got all the technical sneakiness of the Thief games, with more moves and options due to Sam's moveset, and plenty of gadget based trickery to play.

Noone mentioned the Tenchu series so far??? Y'all need to be ashamed of yourselves!
I agree, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, it's in the title. The first 3D stealth action game and still one of the best.

"What?!"
"You..."

Thief because stealth wasnt optional it was required. Yeah you did have a sword but it was nigh on useless as garret's not the best swordsman in video game land.

Huge fan of Hitman. You really got to be creative :)
I agree, Hitman is pretty awesome in ways of planning your kill in the levels

It's hard for me to decide however, I loved Splinter Cell, played Metal Gear 1,2 & 3 (2 was my faviorite) and Hitman is like i said awesome

I used to like making stealth / archer characters on Oblivion though, stealth critical arrow shots to the face :D

Chaos Theory bro. That game was the last and greatest Splinter Cell as far as I'm concerned.
Totally agreed. I didn't care for the prequels or the sequel so much; Chaos Theory was the best of the lot.

I like Deus Ex because it's relatively forgiving. Most of the time, the guards will go "Huh? What's that?" Before blasting your guts full of lead, and since your guts are quite soft in that game (especially at the highest difficulty, which I still found fun), this is a good thing. Also, it allows for players who don't have lightning-fast reflexes.

Oh, and none of that "You were detected... GAME OVER!" crap, like in certain other stealth games. Plus you don't have to kill (most) enemies, you have some freedom to solve many of the game's challenges in different ways, and the story and dialogue are pretty deep, though it borrows a lot from here and there, granted.
