Melee was better for its time than Brawl, but I can't go back to Melee now. So Brawl for me. Also Brawl is balanceder, although my beautiful Marth got nerfed and my precious Falcon!

Melee, they nerfed Sheik in the new one.
They nurfed most of the old characters in brawl. That and they took out MewTwo... Why no mewtwo? That was my main for so long, I don't even remember! And I can't even PLAY as that new one they put in, Lucario.

Melee, it was the first with more characters. And they had Roy!

Shame on you Nintendo, removing Roy, but keeping Marth. Like anyone likes Marth more than Roy
Fingers crossed, next SSB has Roy and Ike. AETHER!!

Melee, I went round me mates house and played it and it was amazing to me, it made me feel what a great multiplayer game is. Brawl was good but it didn't have that grip as it did with Melee and I've never played the original.

I'd have to go with Melee. Most fun, and best characters. Why Young Link and Mewtwo had to be axed, I don't know. Who even likes Lucario or cel shaded Link?

brawl was the first game i waited until midnight for and it was worth it. by getting rid of the clones like docter mario, or young link the game was better, and a improved story mode along that actually had a story to it. and you have to admit that it was badass when kirby shot therw the ship and cut it in 2 all by himself. and final smashes where awsome, and custom stages videos and pics to share online, online brawl, new stages and charaters like snake and sonic, and an all new trophie and target mode. you also have to say that all the new glitchs were fun too. why people like melle better I will never know. (did I mention co-op event mode, or the new multi man and homerun durby mode, or maybe upgrade items like the sowrd and assit trophies, and unlockables and secret retro demos?) If you need a reason to get a wii, then your reason is called BRAWL!!!!!!!

They were just poor clones anyway, toon-link is different to Link and Lucario makes a more interesting and complex clone to Samus than Mewtwo did. As for who likes them? I adore toon-link, although Lucario isn't as badass as Mewtwo :(

Brawl plays the best and looks the best, some of the more pointless clones are gone, its story mode is the best, but its more luck than skill due to the overpoweredness of the assist trophies and final smashes. I allso miss Roy and Mewtwo.

i don't see why everyone liked melee the most. brawl's just the same but upgraded basically. i think brawl's the best.

SSB is good for getting the idea out, but the abilities of the individual characters was somewhat lacking. The graphical limitations of the N64 were also easy to see- polygonal nightmare.

SSB:M widened individual character abilities, character rosters, stage selections, and so much more.

SSB:B ... well, I suppose it's not terrible, but tbh I thought the game's balance was skewed, the Emissary missions were lacking, and half the time it felt like the stages were more the cause for damages and KOs than the players were.

The number of times I tried using one of Metaknight's B moves and ended up catapulting into the side of the stage... ugh. No thanks. I'll keep Melee's clone characters, thank you very much.

Brawl. It was better balanced so it isn't just a matter of playing as Fox Falco or Sheik.
It also has Rob and Ike, my mains.
Not one of those characters won any tournament that I had played in.

Generally speaking they were easy but they were hardly the best characters.

Luigi for instance could kill any of those 3 pretty darn easily. So could Marth. Captain Falcon...well ok...basically the entire roster of characters short of 2-3 people are just as good or better.

When the game FIRST came out everyone played them, within two months folks had found that no character dominated any other really.

Shit the best character in the whole game was Jigglypuff, if memory serves the 'best player ever' played him.

There was little extra balancing done with Brawl, as far as I've seen everyone returned to the last game.

Why?

Because Balancing wasn't even the goal of Brawl. They wanted to make it a party game. Melee was a mistake according to one of the interviews back when Brawl first came out, it wasn't supposed to be so 'hardcore'. I put little dealies on the sides of that word because I hate when the term comes up :p.

Melee

Melee took everything great about the original, made it faster, prettier, and more refined. My only major complaint was Wave Dashing because it made some characters incredibly unbalanced, and I personally believe using a game exploit should not be a requirement for competitive play.

Brawl had messed up physics, more character balancing issues, extremely repetitive single player modes, smaller stages (making Sonic not so useful), a nerfed Mario, completely unbalanced items, less responsive controls, and generally a slower gaming experience. Everywhere they made a step forward, they took a step back in already established parts of the game. They hyped the crap out of the game only to pull several dick moves.

Edit: I was also pissed they removed Mewtwo. He was the only non-clone they removed, and he was arguably the most unique fighter in Melee because he required a completely different strategy to use well. Giving us the butt-ugly trophy that was difficult to unlock was a kick in the nuts, too.
