...Fallout 3.

But really, if you can stomach generic Tolkienesque fantasy world #691,275... I hear Oblivion is fine.

Borderlands is more... shooty. Not much of an RPG experience.

Borderlands if you want to hang out with friends for a few, Oblivion if you're in a more "I'm gonna sit here for 14 hours" kind of experience.
Really, both are good.

Both incredible games. Both with their flaws and strong points.
Hard to compare each game.
But I cant forgive is "fake open worlds".

Borderlands would have been so much better if it didn't section off and funnel it's gameplay.
I always feel constrained when playing it.

I feel that Bethesda are the only devs that do true open worlds.

Down to their core gameplay, they are both pretty solid.
But Oblivion sells it for me on having actual freedom.

Fallout 3. It's Oblivion with a more Borderlands setting and, being made by the same company as Oblivion, is identical in many ways. They also substantially upgraded the game to make it even more fun than Oblivion was.

I'd say if you have friends to play with, Borderlands is a great option (playing by yourself is alright, but let's face it, the game was BUILT for co-op)

Oblivion is a great single player experience, but doesn't offer anything in the way of playing it with friends

either or, honestly, just depends on your situation

If you want a more purebred RPG, which I what I am guessing from the whole just come out of playing retro ones then it has to be Oblivion.Swords, sorcery and magic all over the place, and done mightily well may I add.

Borderlands, another game I love, on a design and graphical level far outshines Oblivion, but they can't really be compared at all. It's an FPS that is heavily blended with RPG elements, to the point that I think it's more an RPG than FPS and is the only example of that where it works beautifully.

I would say Oblivion first, I think it's too soon to jump to something a truck load different RPG wise, plus Oblivion is one of the greatest games I have ever played, 800hrs on that *****.

That's like comparing a tree to a television remote. The only thing they have remotely in common is RPG elements, but that's stupid, because Borderlands is not really an RPG, its more like a Shooter that every once and again you can decide something. And at least 98% of the time, that decision is whether to use a rocket shotgun, or a machine gun.

Personally I couldn't get into Oblivion. Feeling like I had to min/max my stats before leveling up wasn't something I really wanted to have to do outside an MMO. Both games will have the world scale with your level, only in Oblivion if you didn't 5/5/5 your stats it seems the game's difficulty becomes impossible at level 5. Or so it was for me anyway.

It was disappointing and horribly off-putting as I really wanted to love the game like many others before me.

I'd say Borderland's is one of my favorite shooter on the 360 but it has essentially 3 enemies, animals that charge you, "humans" that charge you and some ranged enemies. Now I realize this can be said about most games, but it felt really repetitive, since the enemies didn't really change and the areas were fairly similar.

Oblivion on the other hand, there's like a 90% chance that it will consume hours upon hours of your time.

Now I'll have to disagree.

The Bandits are given randomized weapons which mean how you fight each can change drastically. There was different types as well, the brutes usually carry bigger weapons like rocket launchers, MGs and what's not, and are typically harder to kill. Then there's ones that always charge are you which come in two variance, a crazy one, and a crazy one on fire. There's the midget equivalent as well, one with the shotgun and the other ... just charge at you. There's a shitload of variety in what they do for sure. Careful about the suicide midgets :p

The animals are varied, and each have different attack patterns, and different weakness. The skags and spider-ants, which are the most two commons compared to the flying ones, and the flying bosses are literally on dragon-level of craziness.

Bottomline is, there's a lot of variety in the type of enemies you face. Unlike Dragon Age 2 :p

Then there's the Soldiers (lance dudes) ... normal soldiers, engineers with turrets, and dudes with riot shields, fighting against their boss-level equivalents can be painful, challenging, and fun.

The areas are all unique (no two caves are the same) ... the planet is basically a giant dumpster but it does have its landmark in the form of 'dungeons'. The "dungeons" are beautifully designed, and I never got enough of old haven (my favorite 'dungeon' of the bunch).

The game is repetitive, and like you said, so is every other games. But it does what it set out to do, pretty well. It's diablo with guns.

PRO-TIP: For both games, the DLC ramps up the gameplay exponentially. EXPONENTIALLY, my friend:

Oblivion:

Wizard's Tower - A home base in the mountains, with portals to all the mages guilds (which makes becoming a full mage easier than ever), a garden full of alchemy ingredients, an item enchanting er, thing. It's the perfect place to crash. (Each "class" has their own - Smuggler's Cove, a ship in a cave for Roguish Pirates, The Fighter's Stronghold, a huge fortress with servants and a hidden Dragon Sword, and Deepscorn Hollow, for vampires who love to kill and languish in a coffin afterward.)

The Shivering Isles - Wonderlandian fantasy land, with enormous mushroom saplings, insane residents, presided over by Sheogorath, a daedra who's every line is pure gold. Totally engaging story in that place, just plain awesome. And if you get the CD with Knights of the Nine, there's a whole thing about collecting the Armor of the Nine Divines that A.) Culminates in kicking a lot of ass and B.) Gives you armor you can place on a display that repairs AND upgrades it. Epic? Epic.

Borderlands:

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned - Absolutely hilarious, and the best showcase of the game's offbeat humor that makes it less of a generic RPG-Shooter. Available at level 10, so the fun starts early.

Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot - Addictive music, a melting pot of crazy fights in the Starter, Gun, Badass, Horde, and Boss waves. After you beat each of those waves once, it goes into further insanity as stuff is randomly changed - speeds, ammo, etc. Completely frenetic and fantastic.

I haven't played much of either Claptrap's Robot Revolution (but what I have is funny) or General Knoxx's Hidden Armory (but I use it to grab a few $1,000 for my brand new characters) but if you get GOTY you can find out.

If you have friends to play with that won't steal your shit, Borderlands. Playing it alone however is just plain boring. If you plan to play alone, Oblivion.

Well, you just need to ask yourself which game has more guns. Oblivion has 0 guns. Borderlands has 87 bazillion guns. I think your choice is pretty clear :)

(But, really, they're both pretty good. Oblivion is exploration-related, and Borderlands is shoot-people-in-the-face-with-your-friends-related. If you're interested in Oblivion, I'd actually recommend picking up Morrowind or Fallout:NV/3 instead, which are better IMHO.)

For a retro gamer, oblivion is less of a jump, but I never got into it that much, Borderlands on the other hand, great game, so, I think its more accessable and more enjoyable, which is what games are to me.

Oblivion is fun but it really is a "make your own fun" kind of game. The main quest is good, but not great and it just depends on whether you get a lot of personal satisfaction out of beating a lot of (admittedly quite good) sidequests. Also, in Oblivion you have to constantly fight with the horrible leveling system.

Borderlands is a lot of fun too. A lot of people might knock the story (which is bad) but you cannot knock the writing as Borderlands is probably the funniest game I have ever played (especially the General Knoxx DLC). There is TONS of content in Borderlands and a lot of reason to re-play it as well (level capping, multiple characters, way better loot). And all of the DLCs are top-notch (except for The Underdome). I personally have around 6 days of Borderlands playtime and I had a blast for all 6 days.

They are completely different games and the video game snob in me wants to say get Oblivion because that is what's popular and generally considered "good" but Borderlands is just way more fun. Borderlands is definitely the way to go I think.

Take the best of both=Fallout (3 or New vegas)
I mean borderlands wasteland setting, guns, rpg-ish and Oblivion's gameplay and mechanics, all comes to Fallout.
Its the best of both worlds/games.

Borderlands is way more fun than Oblivion, only if you have 4 friends which you can play co-op with.I wouldn't recommend trying solo to join online with others, especially without Ventrilo/Skype.

Not much of a fan of Oblivion, but as far as I've played it,you can get -a lot- of hours value for the current price.

Really depends on which "setting" interests you more.
