There's a very small amount of strategy and skill; knowing the maps helps a lot, and finding a load-out your good with. I have noticed I don't play as well as I did after not playing for awhile
Reflexes and knowing your map are the great bulk of the skill required in virtually all FPSs. PC gaming involves good equipment and good key mapping. Some games have certain exploitable skills you need to learn (strafe running in Doom, rocket jumping in Quake, bunny hopping in scores of games). But, really, the core skills carry over remarkably well between games.

I find the whole "this game takes so much more skill than yours" attitude to be more than a bit funny. I suspect it's either a way to build up their own game (seriously, most of these games involve tactics... not just your favorite) or because they don't have the experience necessary to consistently win on the game they're deriding.

Personally, I find CoD quite strategic. I
So yes, CoD takes mental skill, planning and situational awareness. People may just not approach the game in that manner.
Very interesting, mental skill. Seems like most of you guys are saying the same sort of things. I like all of the opinions around here, let's keep it going.

You dont realize it, because its so fast paced. But COD does require skill.

Knowing which targets to engage first in order of threat to you, is something the actual military uses, and its present in most better players gameplay.

knowing how to control the map and play the objectives, or control the spawns and get the best kill zones.

people who dont think COD takes skill probably aren't very good at it, and dismiss those who are as having good reflexes. While reflexes take a part in it, it's also about how well you stay on target.

if you were to put some of the higher end teams against a group of random people, what do you think would happen? it would be a cake walk.

any time someone is better than someone else, there is personal skill involved.

so yes, it takes skill.

infact, it takes more skill than most other games do.
in most RPGs my skill ends when im done picking my characters abilities, after that, it's up to him to do the rest. in COD it's all dependent on you.

As someone who played MW2 till 9th prestige, I'm going to have to say yes. It's a pity that they have perks like Stopping Power and Steady Aim to artificially make you more skillful though.

It does require skill. Obviously.

But since everyone die in half a second.. it feels more like a contest of reflexes than anything else. Very individualistic approach.

But im biaised. I dont like that gameplay. I prefer BCC2 and others like it where the "larger" strategy and tactic matter more, and where you dont die in a instant if you do a mistake. Since its team-based your buddies can ressuply and revive you.

yes of course it requires skill! there is a reason 95% of the time i can go into a game and consistently kick ass, because i'm good at it, and there is a reason sometimes i will go fucking mental 5% cause i've met one of those super freaks online and its doing my god dam head in.

like any game i'll admit its 50% skill 50% if that guy just keeps turning his back on you at the wrong time your gunna kill him simple as, but if you are good at cod and those sort of games ur gunna come out in the top 50% time and time again.

and there is stratergie you can follow to an extent on cod. also one thing i dont get is people talking about working as a team on cod, if there is one game its impossible to get people to work as a team on its black opps (excluding zombies) seriously its like rambo fever, everyman for himself, shit is crazy, no point even trying, if i want a team work shooter, ill play rainbow six with my mates or flashpoint, something where dieing does not just mean u have to wait 3 secs to respawn, cause cods an arcade shooter, its made for rambo fever.
you have obviously never played COD with a good team.

I would say any game where there is a definitive difference between how two people perform must have skill involved. I don't even understand how this is a question. Reaction time, strategic reloading and making the best class for your own personal style all factor into how consistently well you play.

I can't get 30/0 K/D I know people who can, I'm sure plenty of people on here will claim to be able to. These people have skill, people like me who sit at bottom of their team do not have skill.
This.

I would also add strategic movement and smart gameplay.

Call of Duty: Spray and Pray. Honestly I stopped playing when the majority of players once again donned the SMG's and proceded to achieve greater accuracy from hip fire than ADS with an assault rifle.

I'm of course talking about ranges where the assault rifle should clearly outplay the SMG's, smaller or close quarter maps are obviously better suited to SMG's.

Simply being able to use a joypad is a skill in and of itself that many gamers take for granted. Take someone who has never played on a console and they, most of the time, will have great difficulty getting used to moving with on joystick and turning the camera with the other.

I think, with most shooters out there, there is a level of skill required and it's more than quick aiming and reflexes, although those are very important. When I play games like Call of Duty: Black Ops I always try and outsmart my opponents, try and predict where they will go and what they might do. Play the game for long enough and you get a feel for where claymores are placed and where decent camping spots are.

A little, but you just need to be faster (and preferably the match host) basically.

You have to think a little bit more in stuff like Bad Company 2.

Well, since I suck at FPS games (mostly due to the fact that they never interested me, so I never invested more than an hour in playing them...total), I would say that they at least require basic targeting skills. Folks with shoddy hand/eye coordination or slow reflexes are not going to be able to compete on a balanced level with folks who have superior skills.

I reckon it's all about twitch reaction, which kinda brings the game into being a glorified quicktime event in a way...

It takes a little skill to make aim fast and fine, and when to shot and not to shot, but other than that, not so much. You just have to master the levels and you should be fine

It's pretty much all about twitch reflex and predicting/locating your enemies positions if you have some teamwork with you (never happened to me in a game before, save for when I go in with a friend in party chat.)

Having a good connection helps too. It's frustrating when you put 4 shots into a guy charging you but he still knifes you, then in the killcam he only took one or two of those. With the kill times and speed of the game so quick the lag you can get even with solid connections is a pretty big liability.

Nope. All it takes is an oversized machine gun and sitting in a corner shooting anything that moves.
Team coordination ain't a big part. Neither is stealth, or reloading, or timing, or platforming, or paying attention to what you're hitting. All just mindless shooting.

Not since CoD 2. Ah, I remember first 2 CoD games really required skill. These games just don't because they are basically run and gun games. You run around shooting anything that pops into your screen. There is no skill in that. I dominated my first match in MW2 and I got the game 3 months after it's release. Anyone can dominate that game it's ridiculous. That's why I don't bother with CoD anymore. There is no sense of achievement no matter how you play. And developers know that. That's why they have all those unlockables to imitate the sense of personal achievement. But everyone can still get those!
