I reckon games need to have a balance of at least good gameplay, re-playability, and graphics. And a good story also really helps. There's nothing worse than getting to the end of a game and realizing the story really sucked, or made no sense.

Graphics are nice, but cannot excuse poor gameplay.

Anyone who didn't vote this should stop playing games right now.

Good graphics are needed up to a point. What that point is depends on your art style, which is why you should think through your art style thoroughly if your team doesn't have a lot of artists. Take Darwinia; the 3D game in which the protagonists only consist of ONE polygon and no actual voice acting. You could empathize with those little guys because of the gameplay, and the designers probably spent about a millionth of the time on them as a big budget AAA game would on some massive jaw-hanging idiot who spouts off about his wife in a really poor ATTEMPT to get you to like him. They're just neat, stylistically; and you have a sort of "branding" to your game now.

However. If you take the "realistic" art route with not much graphics hardware available, and your characters turn out polygonish, you can't hide behind the gameplay anymore. Some games can afford to do this and do it correctly.

If something can mix good graphics and good gameplay, that's great. (IMO, Gears 2)
However, if it'll improve the game, I'm fine with things being a little chunky.

I'm a sucker for pretty graphics, yet I have utterly hated some of the best looking games out there because the gameplay was inferior... Assasin's Creed, Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia 2008 to name a few.

Cookie for anyone who can spot the link between those three...

But I can't imagine I'd have spent 200 hours plus in Cyrodil and the Capital Wasteland had they not been so gorgeous to look at.
UBISOFT! Cookie me. I look at a game as Gameplay and story first. Then control and sound. Then "Funfactor" for replayability and finaly Online Fun factor. If a game comes out sporting its BEAUTY i judge that also but only if thats a selling plot.

Ubisoft? Do I get cookies?

I also agree with having Bethesda games to good to look at. I love just climbing to the top of a mountain and staring off into the country side. That is just awesome.
Cookies for you both!

You are also cordially invited to front row seats at the official Ubisoft blackmail night.

It's where we kidnap thier devs and hold them to ransom until they agree to make Prince of Persia back into the way it was for the SOT trilogy.

Also, Axia... nothing beats climbing a hill in Fallout 3 and watching the sun set over ruined motorways and buildings, it's achingly beautiful

If a game has good graphics, its a plus for me, if it doesn't I won't really care if the story and gameplay are good.

Now, if the graphics are absolute shit like the conduit or something and ruin immersion just because the graphics suck, then yeah, I'll hold that against it.

they aren't essential but if there are good graphics, great, if not i don't mind. most of my favorite games don't have great graphics but they have so much other stuff going for them.

Graphics are kind of like the icing on the cake for me. A cake without icing isn't aesthetically pleasing. but you also can't have a cake made out of just icing.

Or basically. graphics are what draws your attention to the game but it has to have a solid base of either gameplay or story (preferably both)

Developers sacrificed game play and story telling for better graphics a long time ago but it seems that recently only the biggest budget games get any polish. I've seen a lot of games with graphical flaws that wouldn't have been accepted by the pc community on console in recent years. I think its a general trend considering the size of the corporations that make games no longer have any personal drive behind them and are just churned out to meet deadlines. Just stupid things like weapons clipping through walls in call of juarez, I mean low budget PC FPS games ten years ago didn't even have issues like this.

I love it if when I play a game for the first time it makes me go "Oh it's so prettttty!!" but if the gameplay is shite then it will take me ages to get into it. Pretty games aren't that rare though and ones with good gameplay are so meh...I would prefer the good gameplay.

I don't really care about graphics as long as they are somewhat modern (I have no complaints about any of the graphics on any of the modern systems) but unfortunately, I do have a hard time going back to previous consoles from an older era. I really hate that but it makes it hard for me to play. Other than that? Nah.

Graphics are starting to turn into Halo. Everyone says that all people think about are graphics, but you never see anyone complain to much about graphics.
