It really depends on what the singers genre, country in which they perform in, etc. is.

If you're a female pop singer in my country (United States, the world's most superficially free country) you HAVE to be attractive.

However, if you're a male reggae artist, of course you don't have to be attractive.

No.

Musical talent has nothing to do with physical beauty. And musicians who are physically attratcie generally are pretty sub-standard when it comes to musical talent, but they become famous anyway, not because they are good musicians but because they fulfil some peoples sexual fantasies.

I don't understand, are you asking whether they do need to be, or whether they should?

Because in the former case, no, but it helps. Depends on genre too: for pop singers, it's important, but metal bands don't seem to care very much. For the latter: no, it shouldn't make any difference.

Not in the case of men I think - just look at Meat Loaf or Marilyn Manson (both of whom I love btw)

She's not even talented, she's just better than we thought she would be.
She sounded better than most Fantines, but not the one from the Original London Cast. I'd say that counts as talent. Listen to the 50th Anniversary cast and you'll see what I mean.

It depends, pop it definatly helps to have a pretty face if you're either a man or woman. However metal and hip hop is a good example that you don't need to be good looking to push sales. For example look at slipknot they have masks that are based around their fears and to horrify people yet they have sold millions of records

Well it depends, look at emo music for an example, it got big because magazines said that people should listen to the music because it's now cool and attractive to look like that. So in reality it helps to be good looking however the better musicians don't tend to whore themselves out just to sell their music.

And to all those people commenting on people like Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger, each one of them has probably had more sex than everyone on this forum combined, before they were famous.

I imagine its easier to get into the music business if you look good. But then of course that probably goes for most jobs.

As for me I don't really care that much about the artists beyond the music. That's what I came for and that's what I'll stay for.

No, I really don't think they have to beautiful. :p But it helps... in some cases, I mean some guys get popular off their uglyness. Looking at you Slipknot >_>

But if you want people to get interested, you have to be seen, and if you're seen, it's an advantage to be good-looking. Sad but true.

EDIT: It's like MovieBob said in a "GameOverthinker" [http://gameoverthinker.blogspot.com/] episode [http://gameoverthinker.blogspot.com/2008/04/episode-six-pr0n.html]: "everybody like a pretty girl". Do guys can be ugly and still make it, (just look at Stephen Tyler and Mick Jagger...) but girls/women have a lot more pressure on them to be beautiful. Except opera singers. :)

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. Not saying I like her music but she seemed to do ok for an ugly disgusting crackwhore.
I don't know a single person who likes her. I don't understand why anybody would. And I promise it has nothing to do with her looks.
She must of done well musically as she made a fuck load of money and was all over the radio all the time.
Have you heard her music???? In what universe is that good music???

Randy Newman certainly isn't much of a looker, and he's a great musician.

Looks =/= Musical Talent

No, in fact, I think a lot of the time, ugly people make better music, because they spend less time fussing on their exterior ;).

Seriously, the only "genre" where looks would count is pop/R&B, and even then, pure looks can only get a singer so far.
