No, (in my opinion) anyone with real talent doesnt have to proove themselves by being beautiful or photoshoped or "done up". Lissie and Mick Jagger for instance.

No, musicians have to play music. Just about anyone can learn an instrument or how to sing. Most of my friends that were in bands were average looking people.

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. Not saying I like her music but she seemed to do ok for an ugly disgusting crackwhore.
I don't know a single person who likes her. I don't understand why anybody would. And I promise it has nothing to do with her looks.
She must of done well musically as she made a fuck load of money and was all over the radio all the time.
Have you heard her music???? In what universe is that good music???
I'm sorry is you're opinion relevant on whether or not she was a success musically? I don't like her music but if she made alot of money and alot of albums and alot of people bought those albums then she was a success musically.

I fail to see what your opinion on her music has to do with it? Same as mine has nothing to do with it. I've already said I don't like it twice.
Fine fine. I'm sorry. Sometimes my hate for her gets the better of me.

Do internet posters have to grammar?

No, they don't have to be.
It helps, if an artist is aiming for teenage audience, though.

I voted no, but that's because the question asked about musicians. Sure it may just be semantics, but I would hesitate to call many of those who are popular in the music business "artists" or "musicians." Visual appeal, even if it's a quirky sort of appeal like Amy Winehouse or Lady Gaga (or even Slipknot), is pretty much a requirement if you are going to be out there, popular and making money.. and being "beautiful" certainly adds to that.

You can, however, be a quality and successful musician or artist without being particularly attractive.

No. It helps to look interesting, though.
To clarify, I'm not saying Thom Yorke is ugly. I would love to look like him. He's just not one of those airbrushed-looking identitwats.

The Decemberists are probably one of the ugliest bands around today but I could care less because the music they make is awesome.

Financially and musically are different. Financially, sure she made a shit ton of money. That's got little to no connection with how successful she was in terms of music, which is not measured in sales or money or even popularity.

Well, they'd have to be to be in pop music. But then, that has very little to do with their musical ability anyway.
In any music that matters, appearance is completely unimportant. Obviously.

I have been thinking about this for a while. Most artists and singers who have record deals are beautiful, gorgeous, cute... whatever you want to call it.

So is it possible if you look like nothing special?

Is it possible to create a career when you don't look like Taylor Swift or one of Girls Aloud and will it make it harder for you to do that?

Or is it nothing to do with looks in the Music business and more to do with the fact that you can sing or not?
Ever heard of Mama Cass, or Grace Slick?

The answer is "no". :p
