They shouldn't have to be, and I am a fan of quite a few "ugly" bands like the Drive-By Truckers, but watching Arcade Fire on stage just puts me off. Win Butler is just so...hideous.

Yes I think so, 99/100 a musician won't be successful as a pop star unless they are good looking, that seems to be more important to their success than minor things like being able to sing or play an instrument.

Being attractive helps. In almost everything in life. Sad but true.

The real lame part is the double edged sword that female musicians have to deal with. When a guy's making music and he's not attractive, you don't hear people insulting him incessantly for it. And when he IS attractive you don't hear people constantly saying how he got to where he is solely because of his good looks. It's exhausting.

The reason for this is simple, in popular culture women are sex objects. And most play on it.

its damn near impossible to become a household name without the looks, but not impossible. there are plenty of composers, instrumentalists and stuff who are musicians that are as ugly as holy hell, but they still make a good living.

It's so simple it's not even really a question. It's pretty obvious, still sucks though.

It doesn't really matter to me, as long as they are not retarded twats. like Justin Bieber and Hannah montana going like "i play rock! i am a very important and serious musician!" when all they ever do is giving blow jobs to Mickey Mouse just so they can do one more fucking stupid song about friendship and love.

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. Not saying I like her music but she seemed to do ok for an ugly disgusting crackwhore.
I don't know a single person who likes her. I don't understand why anybody would. And I promise it has nothing to do with her looks.
She must of done well musically as she made a fuck load of money and was all over the radio all the time.
Have you heard her music???? In what universe is that good music???
I'm sorry is you're opinion relevant on whether or not she was a success musically? I don't like her music but if she made alot of money and alot of albums and alot of people bought those albums then she was a success musically.

I fail to see what your opinion on her music has to do with it? Same as mine has nothing to do with it. I've already said I don't like it twice.
She's only made one album...jus' sayin'.

OT: They don't have to be beautiful to be successful as a musician. It helps. But it's not necessary. Have you seen Mick Hucknall?

Musicians do not have to be attractive to be talented. They have to be attractive to be famous.

Plus I'm pretty sure a lot of companies think about looks first and talent later. Just look at all the Disney singers like Britney and Miley.

Kinda has to do with her being a pretty fucking talented singer, no skinny British white chicks have any business being that good.
If she's talented she needs to fire whoever's teaching her. I don't claim to be a music guru but I know what sounds good. Moaning about going back to rehab doesn't.
Well there's certainly no accounting for taste. I will say this, as a musician myself I tend to hold singers to very, very high standards, and she's just freakin' talented. She can sing, and sing very well. Maybe it's just not your kinda music?

And honestly, I thinks she's got a sum total of one song 'whining about going back to rehab'.
As I said. I don't know anyone who likes the music. I'm honestly waiting to see these so called fans. If and when I see them I'll take that it's not my taste.

As long as everyone, guys and girls both, have a beard like this guy, no one cares.

Unfortunately, in today's market I think you do. You don't really even need musical talent, so long as you're an attractive young woman willing to shake your ass on camera.

Can't we go back to music for the sake of good music, music industry? That sells pretty well, too.

A great singer with an awesome voice gets +10 to attractiveness. So, no matter how ugly they are, they still rate in my book.

In my opinion, for a person to be a pop (don't forget that pop actually means popular :p) artist you don't even have to sing, or play or make any sort of music (ever wonderd why all girls in the pop industry sound sort of samish, and why since Akon lots of guys sing exactly as him?).
you have to meet the standards of the population, that might include looking good (it does, generaly).
People who acctualy want to make music, and not make shit-tons of money, indeed need to play, but looks are meaningless.

It doesn't particularly matter to me, but it does to a lot of people. Ever notice who have a predominantly male line up tend to have a good looking front woman? Then ever notice how that front woman gets offered photo shoots and is the main focus in videos of said band, whilst the guys are left in the background? I'm not saying that they only have a beautiful front woman because it makes them popular, but it could be argued that they're popular because they have a beautiful front woman.

You don't have to be a good looking dude to make it in music, but it is a very rare occurrence when an ugly woman makes it big.

Women tend to get by on very little talent but a pretty face because the media is a dab-hand at manipulating the public. Men tend to be judged on whether or not they actually have any talent. Which, in my opinion, is the best way to go about it.

To make it big in the music industry, you have to be REALLY good if you're unattractive. If you're attractive you don't have to try as hard, as people will buy your music regardless.

Examples: Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, The Jonas Brothers, Backstreet boys e.t.c.

If you want an example of an unattractive frontman who made it big (at least bigger than most), check out The Verve's ex-frontman, Richard Ashcroft. I have nothing against him, but he is often considered unattractive. (btw I'm a big fan of the Verve).
