In answer to the question, no, musicians don't have to be attractive physically to be successful, though I guess it can help a fair bit. In reference to my La Roux statement, the singer in the duo, Elly Jackson, is fairly ugly (no offence to her). La Roux are also one of last year's biggest new UK acts, and are tipped to be massive in the years to come. So there's a disproof for you right there .

I'm a fairly ugly dude, but i'm conventionally probably the second best looking in my band, and recently I've found that the males tend to take to our music a lot more than females do at gigs, whether this has anything to do with us not fitting into their ideal of a good looking band i'm not sure, but it certainly seems likely :/

Well there's certainly no accounting for taste. I will say this, as a musician myself I tend to hold singers to very, very high standards, and she's just freakin' talented. She can sing, and sing very well. Maybe it's just not your kinda music?

And honestly, I thinks she's got a sum total of one song 'whining about going back to rehab'.

As I said. I don't know anyone who likes the music. I'm honestly waiting to see these so called fans. If and when I see them I'll take that it's not my taste.

Most new music (pop and it's affiliates) is directed towards young people, many of whom largely base their opinions of the musicians (particularly female musicians) on their appearance, entirely overlooking their (lack of) musical talent. Since the most famous musicians spend a lot of time on TV, they need to be concerned with their appearance.

Older rock music as well as most of the modern rock scene still has some very greasy looking people. However most of these guys are still considered attractive. (probably because they have lots of money)

Do they have to? yes and you can Blame MTV for that. Before the whole music video thing of the 80's most musicians were butt ugly. Have you every seen Getty Lee of Rush, or Pete Townsend of the Who? Fantastic bands, really ugly members. Do you know why? Because these guys couldn't get laid in high school and spent all their time practicing getting incredible good so they could become famous and Get Laid! Now you have to be good looking because people are going to see you immediately and not just from the nose bleed section of a stadium. I am convinced that this is why most popular music (not all) is god aweful and why most people are using that annoying auto tune in all their songs! People for the sake of your ears and our musical culture, we must ban all music videos and encourage ugly people to learn to play an instument!
