I know you're a fellow procrastinator by trade, but please, don't feign from completing your sentences. You make the rest of us look like loafers.

That said, do musicians have to be beautiful? To break down the question to semantics, it's asking are they required to be beautiful. For this to be a requirement, there would need to be an expectation on behalf of the viewer. For this expectation to exist, I would say that viewer has to be very shallow. So, in the end, I'd say that musicians have to be beautiful if their viewers are shallow. They probably are if the music is mainstream crap.

Well I certainly ain't no George Clooney...

Though my newly acquired goatee does give me a bit of an edge. Especially considering I'm the rhythm guitarist in my band OH SNAPPY!

Women, in pop/hip hop/mainstream stuff, yeah definitely. Men, not so much. Outside the mainstream and it really doesn't matter. At all.

The problem with mainstream music is all the "artists" have to be pretty. That is not the case with good music fortunately, talent over physical appearance!

Lemmy Kilmister from Mötorhead and Geddy Lee are PERFECT examples for this, you don't have yo be good looking(at least the typical good looking) to triumph in the music industry

Nope, just look at what some of the popular artists have done to themselves, they're horrific freaks of nature with more plastic than flesh, bleached hair, as well as half their stomachs sucked through a tube, and that doesn't stop them from earning millions!

The nice answer is no, there's no reason that the ugliest person in the world couldn't compose something beautiful or have an amazing voice or be a virtuoso on a violin.

More realistically, we're far less likely to hear a musician who isn't at least passably attractive because it's very hard for someone in nearly any field of the entertainment industry (at least, any field that puts you in front of an audience) to get a foot in the door if they aren't pleasant to look at.

We've gotten a little better since the days when a newly manufactured pop act got pushed out the door every week, but not much. You're still far more likely to see a pretty girl with mediocre musical talents make it to the top than a plain girl with amazing musical talents (and again, like other audience-related entertainment fields, this is more true for women than men.)

Things like having smart management and promotion and a willingness to work hard and earn your audience still go a long way. But anyone who thinks looks aren't a factor- often, a big factor- is fooling themselves.

they spend a lot of time and prep on looking as good as they can, but no it's not necessary. it helps a lot, but it's not necessary. Look at willi nelson, charlie daniels, wynonna judd. there are lots of artists that aren't perfect 10's, but it isn't as common.

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. Not saying I like her music but she seemed to do ok for an ugly disgusting crackwhore.
I don't know a single person who likes her. I don't understand why anybody would. And I promise it has nothing to do with her looks.
Kinda has to do with her being a pretty fucking talented singer, no skinny British white chicks have any business being that good.
If she's talented she needs to fire whoever's teaching her. I don't claim to be a music guru but I know what sounds good. Moaning about going back to rehab doesn't.
Well there's certainly no accounting for taste. I will say this, as a musician myself I tend to hold singers to very, very high standards, and she's just freakin' talented. She can sing, and sing very well. Maybe it's just not your kinda music?

And honestly, I thinks she's got a sum total of one song 'whining about going back to rehab'.
As I said. I don't know anyone who likes the music. I'm honestly waiting to see these so called fans. If and when I see them I'll take that it's not my taste.
Seriously? Maybe you could take for granted that they exist, seeing as how her first album did pretty well for itself. I don't personally know any Nirvana fans, but its safe to say they had 'em.

I get you're not a fan, but it's just being purposefully contrary to say that you don't believe she has fans.
As I said. It will take one person to change my view. 1. You said you don't like her so your not going to succeed.

I'm sorry to be like this but my hate for her is strong. I've given her an easy challenge to stop me from bad mouthing her. If she can't appeal to one person in my area, which is quite large, then she isn't doing well for herself in my opinion.
Never said I don't like her. I really do dig her music. So there you go.
Somehow I'm not convinced. Why? Because you would have started with it.
In my very first few posts to you I was saying how talented of a singer she is...
Yes but you didn't say you liked her. You said talent. Talent is different! Yeah I'm just being childish now...

No worries, my own fault for spending literally all day on the god damned Escapist. I blame the flu.

If you have the talent, and you can show it, it doesn't really matter what you look like.

Yup. In the music business lately, beauty is almost everything.

See how all of those beautiful women become super rich and super popular even though their singing voice is kinda "meh" or even worse? It's because of looks.

And then when somebody comes along who has both talent AND looks, then he/she "takes the music world by storm" because of the fact that they've got everybody listening to them and looking at them at the same time.

I know this all sounds dickish, and this comment's gonna complete the asshole-ish-ness of this post; do you think that Susan Boyle would have ever gotten even marginally noticed if it weren't for Britain's Got Talent?

It sucks, and it's not fair, but 90% of the time, it's the people who are attractive that get all the attention. Of course, fame's not all it's cracked up to be.
