Or is it nothing to do with looks in the Music business and more to do with the fact that you can sing or not?
Singing isn't the only role. You need to look good to be a lead singer because you are the focus of everyone's attention. The other guys who play the instruments and such don't even need to be seen. Looking good helps everywhere, though.

What a dull question.

Music marketed directly to teenagers pretty much rely on the artist being attractive.

I think Amy Whinehouse is proof you don't have to be. Not saying I like her music but she seemed to do ok for an ugly disgusting crackwhore.
I don't know a single person who likes her. I don't understand why anybody would. And I promise it has nothing to do with her looks.
Kinda has to do with her being a pretty fucking talented singer, no skinny British white chicks have any business being that good.
If she's talented she needs to fire whoever's teaching her. I don't claim to be a music guru but I know what sounds good. Moaning about going back to rehab doesn't.
Well there's certainly no accounting for taste. I will say this, as a musician myself I tend to hold singers to very, very high standards, and she's just freakin' talented. She can sing, and sing very well. Maybe it's just not your kinda music?

And honestly, I thinks she's got a sum total of one song 'whining about going back to rehab'.
As I said. I don't know anyone who likes the music. I'm honestly waiting to see these so called fans. If and when I see them I'll take that it's not my taste.
Seriously? Maybe you could take for granted that they exist, seeing as how her first album did pretty well for itself. I don't personally know any Nirvana fans, but its safe to say they had 'em.

I get you're not a fan, but it's just being purposefully contrary to say that you don't believe she has fans.

I don't care what someone looks like if what I'm doing is listening to music they've developed, I don't even need to see them unless I wanna watch them so, no, it does not matter.

Look at Kieth Richards and Mick Jager, they are ugly mother-fuckers. Any metal band is likely to be a good example too.

[small]How can one man contain so much awesome?[/small]

In the vapid circles of prefab pop 'sensations', having a marketable image is almost as important, if not more so, as having genuine musical talent. This is a significant factor towards explaining why I despise the overwhelming majority of popular music - music shouldn't be something revolving around a manufactured image, driven by focus groups and marketing drones; music should speak for itself.

I couldn't even begin to list how many bands I like where I have literally no idea what any of the musicians involved look like, and when I do know what they look like I've generally learned that after growing to like them; the music is what ultimately matters, whether they're ugly bastards or drop dead gorgeous is irrelevant.

For example: The fellow to the right is my favorite vocalist of all time, Jorn Lande. Why is he my favorite vocalist of all time?

Answer: He is a Norwegian rock god with a fantastic voice, that's why!

If pressed, I would not classify him as particularly handsome [small](though as a straight man I'm hardly the best person to turn to for those sorts of insights)[/small], but why should that matter to me or anyone else if his vocal performance is so damn fantastic? It shouldn't, unless you're completely shallow.

And that is why so many people talking about music on internet forums hate Pop.

Have you heard of Lemmy? No, they certainly do not need to be beautiful!
And yet he's somehow been with more women than you could shake a Used Condom at! like his voice though...
I highly doubt he used a condom!

He actually kissed someone I know's wife at a signing years ago, what a rockstar move!

To be a GOOD artist, you don't have to be...

...But to be a POPULAR artist, it sure as hell helps.
Exactly that. The most popular musicians are probably the Rolling Stones, and look how rugged they are.

On Metallica's first couple of albums it has their young faces on it, and they aren't exactly what I would call pretty either, just extremely awesome.

No, the don't have to be, and most aren't. It's a thing called 'shopstitution' (at least on image boards). They look nowhere near as good in real life as in album pictures and such. Same with real life appearances. They have so much done to them to change how they look, that they aren't even close to the real them anymore. I actually like natural looking musicians better, as far as all this goes.
