They don't have to be attractive, but by god, it helps. In fact, I've calculated that the amount of natural talent (T) required is inversely proportional to attractiveness (a).
This, of course, is in order to succeed. I don't personally need eye candy to listen to.

Depends on the genre. If it's something like metal that takes actual talent, it isn't mandatory.

Though if you're talking pop and crap like that, probably, but I don't know that you have to be naturally gorgeous, because as long as a girl isn't butt ugly with enough makeup and shit she can look like that. Remember prom when everyone who was usually kind of meh actually made themselves look attractive? I assume most of them do something to that effect.

Except opera singers. :)
Well I as classical musician can say that most Opera singers are bretty from face but they can be kinda "Bloated" time to time, In old days it was just to show that "I have money" now days Opera singers that Perform on Operas are beatiful actors, but Concert/stage singers dont realy matter.

And what is UGLY anyway? It varies person to person, culture to culture.

It's usually the case with pop artists. If one of Girls Aloud put on 5 stone, she'd probably be fired or replaced. Generally, the audience for pop music is that shallow.
What someone else said, it usually helps if you're a woman. Kerrang only ever print posters of Hayley Williams or Cristina Scabbia and rarely the actual band.

Its amazing what photoshop, good make up and a decent photographer can do to make an artist look good.

I have been thinking about this for a while. Most artists and singers who have record deals are beautiful, gorgeous, cute... whatever you want to call it.

So is it possible if you look like nothing special?

Is it possible to create a career when you don't look like Taylor Swift or one of Girls Aloud and will it make it harder for you to do that?

Or is it nothing to do with looks in the Music business and more to do with the fact that you can sing or not?
It only matters if you are making pop music for money, if you are making real music for the passion of it it doesn't matter at all.

Music is audio based, it's like asking whether a painters voice matters

To make music? No.
To make "interesting" music videos? YES.
I, for one, don't really want to see Susan Boyle prancing around in some skimpy outfit for one of her music videos.

Men: have you seen Bob Dylan?
Women: have you seen Joni Mitchell?

No they don't!

Rolling Stones

Aerosmith

Journey

I could go on, but I think I've proved my point.
There's a lot of Aerosmith videos where they don't focus on the band, but on some attractive people that are somehow involved in enacting the story the song tells. Dude looks like a lady being an obvious and expected exception.

On the other hand, The Rolling Stones were considered quite attractive during their early years, but just like Axl Rose, the drugs have taken their toll.

the further you get from the pop music genre, the less attractive and the more skilled the signers are :)

I thought it was the pies that had taken their toll on Axl Rose.

Beautiful is subject to opinion, I think all of them look plain as hell but I guess that's because the media tries to tell everyone to be exactly the same or else you're an ugly fucker.

You don't have to be beautiful to be a musician, you only have to be beautiful to become a whore to the record companies.

"Mainstream" artists gotta have a decent-looking face (photoshop takes care of the rest), but otherwise it doesnt really matter :)
