Well, he's so hard to please, and I'm so broke, that when he does say something's good, I'm entitled to believe him. It doesn't hold me back from buying a game, I still intend to buy Alan Wake, but if he says something's good, I believe him.
Too true. There are what, 100 of them? In the minutes after the review is posted there are always at least 70 fast responses.sinclose said:as 1 user put it it's like the ZP comments and the escapist forums are 2 different comunities...
I agree. He is a critic and not a reviewer so it's going to me he'll be looking for any flaw to crucify and just so happens some games have more so than others.child of lileth said:No. first off, he's a critic. Second, why would I let anyone else tell me if I would like a game or not? That's just stupid. His videos are funny most times, and a nice way to see someone else's perspective on a game I may have already enjoyed, or may have not even tried yet. But I'm not going to let him decide on what to buy for me. That's what rentals are for. You can try it without the full price commitment.
He's insulted a lot of my favorite games . . . those are my favorite shows of his. I love seeing him take the piss out of something I really enjoyed. And I'm 32 and on the verge of two degrees, one in mathematics and one in physics, so I'm hardly a child. Try not to take the poll so personally and please don't attack anyone. This is just friendly discourse. Please share your opinion but not at the expense of someone elses character. I thought my post was pretty clear that I really like ZP and, hence, Yahtzee.Decabo said:First things first: Yahtzee IS a reviewer, and he IS a critic. Those of you saying he isn't must not know what those words mean. Sure, not the fairest reviewer in the world, but he reviews and criticizes games, so he's a reviewer and a critic.
As for if he influences my purchasing? A little. I still have Mirror's Edge on my GameFly list, but if Yahtzee completely rips on a game I was going to buy, it does make me reconsider.
On a side note, seeing you kids trying to break down Yahtzee as nothing more than an insult critic is adorable. What, did he insult one of your beloved games, and now you're taking it out on him?
If anything, I'm worried that the explanations will be too spoon fed.Mako SOLDIER said:Don't be put off. It's an awesome game. Heck, it got full marks in its review here at the Escapist, and the majority of reviews have been 90%+. It deserves a chance, especially if you're into story-driven games, like stories with narration, and don't insist upon having explanations spoon fed to you. Seriously, despite a few minor technical hiccups (yes, Alice does look weird, and yes the lip-synch can be a bit off at times) it's one of my favourite games of all time, and I've been a gamer since the ZX Spectrum. If you trust a random stranger on one thing this year, trust me on thisdanpascooch said:It may deter me if the review is overwhelmingly negative.
The trick with Yahtzee is to scale his reviews toward the positive side, if he is somewhat indifferent, the game is pretty good, if he at all likes it, it's exceptional, but if he absolutely hates it, it's usually below average.
For example, his Alan Wake review just put me off for that game.![]()
