I usually play a male for the first playthrough but i will always go a female afterwards, just to see the variety and for some reason my male characters seem to be good but my females seem to be evil, all the time.... i think i have a problem with women

It was only something I started doing recently. Basically, whilst replaying Fallout 3, it occured to me there was a whole other sex I had never used before. I also made her black, seeing as how all my characters to date were white (with the exception of one in Oblivion, who had red and blue skin). Oh, and she was hot, which takes a lot of effort to customise.

I bought Mass Effect a week or so ago, and my protagonist a ginger-haired white woman. Oh, and she's hideous...which is very easy to achieve.

Usually a male, but I will play female every once in a while, just for the hell of it, or if I've played through once as a male.

Yep. I tend to make a lot of characters in RPGs (which tend to be the only games that give you this choice) and my characters usually end up roughly about a 50:50 male to female split. And I've only ever completed either Mass Effect with a female Shepard, mostly because the voice acting is much better (Jennifer Hale ftw). Also, the choice between playing as just another grizzled space marine stereotype and playing as an actual realistic female heroine that isn't oversexualised was not a hard one.

I've never seen the reason why some people find it "hard to relate" to characters of the opposite sex when the same game usually allows them to play to mages or orcs or whatever other things they aren't in real-life, yet they can somehow "relate" to those just fine.

Nope, never. When given the (relatively) rare opportunity to actually play as a female, damn skippy I'm going to make the most of it.

Usually after I play it through as a guy. Not really sexist. Its the logical place to start for me when I play a game like that, and then I get to see whats different when the game is over and play from another perspective.

Lose a little bit of the feeling of likeness, though. Especially after already playing as a guy

I generally play through as myself (transplanted) the first time I play a game with some degree of customization, but after that first playthrough I'll switch genders freely. (I always make a hot chick as the polar opposite to my fugly, male self, though. Can't resist.)

If I'm staring at my character's ass the whole game, I'll maybe play Female. If it's 1st person though, It's six and half a dozen, I honestly am not fussed either way.

Yes. Good female protagonists are hard to find, and frankly I'd rather spend a few hours staring at a girl's backside than at a guy's.

In games where there's a choice I'll sometimes play male characters (ie cross gender) but mostly only if I can make a pretty guy to play, and generally speaking I do mean pretty rather than handsome (oh yeah, I like elves... a lot). I also sometimes play male characters in pen and paper role play games, (I always check the gm and other players are comfortable with that first though), only complaint I've ever had was from a male friend who said it wasn't fair that I could play more convincing male characters than he could.

Only in fighter games. we all know women can't save the world in any situation haha. unless the protagonist is white. then its probably 50/50

Most of the time I play a female character.

I usually go with the male option once, just to make sure I've got all the options, (like in KoToR II where your gender affects your choice of squadmates), but for general replay, and for the first playthrough, always female.

If the game offers new gameplay experience as a female character I'll play it. I don't see what's so wrong at playing your opposite gender myself, besides the fact some that do exploit it for personal benefit. Besides female BAMFs are most effective than their male counterparts; Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley anyone?
