Being timid by nature, I don't like to advertise the fact that I'm female when I play online. Admitting I'm a girl has caused some pretty annoying situations, as well as some pretty odd ones.

The weirdest one has to be when a guild mate on WoW was "bored" and decided to travel to the middle of Stranglethorn just to give my avatar a hug. Guys like that creep me out more than the ones who go "tits or GTFO".

But really, there will always be assholes when playing online.

I'm confused as to why you would try to pick up chicks on the internet anyway, it seems like you wouldn't get a lot of payoff for the effort. I'm not saying sex is the only reason to talk to girls, and I've had female friends in video games before, but I wasn't trying to get in their pants.

It's not just guys that are assholes, everyone is. Kids, guys, girls, they're all bastards.
Hooray for misanthropy. I must agree with you.

On Topic: I don't really talk to girl gamers all that much. Not because I am shy or anything but because whenever I play a multiplayer game I make sure to either mute everyone I am playing against or be in party chat with friends. Yes, there are some people who don't act immature on x-box live but I would rather take the chance in muting them rather than having to listen to them.
If someone didn't I'd be surprised, I ran into a girl who wouldn't heal me because I was a guy, and she seriously called me sexist for saying "That's bullshit, either heal anyone on the team or change classes, teamwork doesn't work when you help only SOME people because they're different". I don't care if you're a bisexual hermaphrodite if you're shooting bullets at the enemy team you get a healing ray shot at you!

And I've yet to run into a team playing kid, all they do is ruin the game with squeaky voices, and ridiculous demands. "Snot blow up your dispenser and put it somewhere else, I just made one near yours".

Everyone is an asshole online, unless their not ....:| wait....
But yeah, I've met more bastards than good people but it balances out because the good people I met are genuinely good and are quite awesome. Heck one of them bought me a few games .

Yeah, they can be. Luckily, I haven't come across too many pervy and pathetic guys online. I don't do a whole lot of online gaming (I prefer to game alone anyway unless I'm with friends in person) so I don't come across it much.

I've had my share, yes, but I can happily say I've met enough civilized guys (that really just treat me like another gamer, conversations are much more fun that way) from online gaming to balance out the creeps.

Online forums and communities? Different story. GameFAQs is a nightmare for girls. @_@ From my experience, anyways.

Like it's been said before: Anonymity. If people have no accountability, or even if they just think they have no accountability, then they will act however the hell they want. Ever read "The Lucifer Effect" by Phillip Zimbardo? It shows perfectlly well just how much people can change if they think they won't be held responsible for their actions. Now consider the implication of a social setting filled with people who probably aren't that mature in real life where generally nobody really knows you (can't even SEE you) and barely any of these random people meet up again and you've got a situation where it's surprising when people aren't total assholes. That and humans are generally just dicks sometimes.

There's a reason why I'm usually gender-ambiguous on the internet. It is because of those guys. I really, really, really hate them. Even worse having to deal with them in real life, when the boobs and long hair are impossible to hide.

I play WoW and for years my only character was my male night elf rogue. A while back though, I made my first female character, a draeni priest.. and MAN what a difference! I thought everyone knew that 99% of female characters online are played by men.. apparently not. People whisper me for no reason, give me stuff, help me out because they're 'just being nice' - yeah.. and where were you lot when I leveled my OTHER characters?

Still, can be fun to mess with them though!

Yeah. Guys can be pretty pathetic. On my main's server in WoW me and a few of my friends all joined the same guild to raid.

We lasted about 2 days before we left. Friends kept getting bombarded on vent with, "How bangable would you say you are?" from mouth breathers.

i usually hate talking to guys online. the escapist guys are okay so far, but usually when guys find out that i'm a girl in game forums or in-game chat, i get the desperate losers glomming on to me. i get asked WAY more disgusting and offensive things than my cup size, and it really bugs me, mostly because i can't turn it back on them and ignoring it usually makes it worse.

i'm just wondering what makes guys think that asking those kinds of questions will get them what they want.

It's the reason I quit chat rooms so many years ago. Cybering? Really? No, you cannot have a picture of me. That and MySpace; I always used to get messages on MySpace, just random guys, asking if they can have a picture of me, telling me I'm hot or whatever the compliment of the day was, etc.

That being said, girls can totally be pigs, too...

I like to masquerade as a girl on the internet, and accept any and all cyber invitations. Then I go reaaaly far and at the last moment reveal I'm a male. a typical end to the conversation:

Stranger:Whoa... I'm not sure I'm into THAT...
You: Well then you probably won't be into "THIS"

Paraphrasing for decency of course. Surprisingly I get only about 20% more guys than girls. I guess the point of this ramble is that being a pervert isn't necessarily gender related.

HA! capin Rob does have a point there. I didn't expect such friendliness to a reply that obviously involved some sort of flirtation. Especially on THIS VERY FORUM. The Irony! It pleases me.

Yeah it's retarded. There's a guy in Vent who changed his username to " I <3 *my vent name* "
Internet stalking is retarded. I don't use my mic anymore.

I see you've never heard of PurpleRain and Larenxis, who got married after they met on this forum

Yes, although to be honest, the PC online community isn't as bad as Xbox live. That's why I only game on Steam. ^^ Usually the people I play with are silly and we all joke together about me being a girl playing video games, but every once in a while I'll get a creeper who pretends to be my friend and very quickly turns into "So, um, do you have a webcam?"

For the most part it's not too bad for me...but maybe it's because I have a slightly deeper and mature sounding voice than other girls. I dunno, for some reason the guys online tend to fawn over the more high-pitched sounding girls (or maybe I'm just paranoid ^^;)
