I find nationalism detestable. My country is shit and so is yours (whoever is reading this, wherever you are).
You know, every thinking german is somewhat "forced" to think a whole lot about this. And for me, the thing is, that not every nation is shit, but every nation is "good". None is better than the other. I mean, I like this country. I like Germany. Not it's history. But I want to change it into a better place, and that is what patriotism is for me (everybody thinks patriotism is something different. This is only my definition.) I think my nation is not better than any other, but I think that every nation could do better. For example, politicians in this country are only lying (oh good lord I don't even know the words to swear about them in an appropriate way.) morons. (And you are right, Nationalism is stupid.)
Well, quiet samurai said this:
"Are there people that actually don't? It's usually hammered into your brain as a child growing up here in the USA, what with school, sporting events, and the fact they teach you all about in when you are young I would suspect it's known by almost everyone in the USA. I fugured it would be more so in other countries since they are WAY higher then us on the education scale.
But then again, the USA is sometimes overly patriotic."
I want to say something about that.
None of the children here know our anthem.
That pisses me off. Not that I would like to force them to sing it every day or so, but I would like them to just know the text apart from the 5 words that are engraved in our Euro (Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit, "Unity and justice and freedom", that is), but the whole stanza. It's not long. It's not complicated. Only this one stanza. But teaching children in school the national anthem is always regarded as being to patriotic, and as you might know, Germany wasn't at moral high ground when it comes to nationalism. (I just hope that sentence makes sense, because I don't know if my english is working tonight.) Right now, it is okay to show the german flag and sing the anthem and stuff like that, but if you go years back, most germans felt... guilty showing the flag. This nation lost it's sense for being proud of Germany (though there's not tooooo much to be proud of, but still), but that's better now.
I also think that the patriotism of USA is somewhat... too much. Seriously, it's not that I would hate America or anything like that, but there is a reason that America is made fun off in political cabaret. Bush was really... again, I don't know the right words to describe this meatbag of stupidity and naive, chilidish thinking.
