If it's a really good, diverse song, then yeah.
If it's really repetitive and could just as easily be 3 minutes and just as good (possibly better) well then no

good example: Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine

Two songs definitely in that "long" category come immediately to mind, and I love/really like 'em

Dogs, at 17+ minutes, and Atom Heart Mother, at 23+ minutes, both by Pink Floyd, are pretty damn good. Dogs especially, it's like, one of my most favorite songs ever. Atom Heart Mother is...good throughout different parts, but it's a very peculiar taste, IMO. Not everyone digs it. It was very avant-garde at the time, and still kinda is. The vocal parts are an aqcuired taste, I'd say. But the "spaghetti-western-space-opera" vibe it has going on is certainly compelling...

Only if it carries well and goes somewhere, sure. Something that just drones on for the sake of being a long song... no.

Yes.

Now excuse me while I spend the next 20 minutes of my life listening to A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater.
Quoted for being awesome.

OT: Yeah I like long songs as long as they *should* be long (a perfect example of a song that should be twenty minutes long is ACoS above), I don't like padding.

Even more OT since he was talking about eight or nine minute songs: yeah they're about where I'm at, I find it hard to listen to any song much under four minutes cause it goes past so quickly

Dream Theatre's 'The Count of Tuscany', 'Octavarium', and 'In The Presence of Enemies' are awesome. Also, The Keeper of the Seven Keys is 13:37, iirc.

One of my favourite songs is about 10 minutes long. If I'm in the mood, I'll listen to it the whole way through.

God, someone should really hit me for not mentioning this one earlier:
Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant Massacree".

Yea, I'm no metal fan. Give me a folk song any day.

Har, you think 9 minutes is long?

Try listening to Dopesmoker by Sleep. It's an album that's all one song, and it's an hour long.

It's surprisingly listenable. I sometimes listen to it falling asleep.

So yes, I love long songs. When you listen to Stoner/Doom metal, it kind of comes with the territory.

I just used 9 minutes as a random starting point cause thats about twice as long or more as most average songs (3 to 4 minutes)

Sure, they're great. Tori Amos' best song, I Can't See New York, is about seven minutes.
