Addressing a particular drink: use the thing's name e.g. Fanta, Coke etc.

A collective amount of different drinks: fizzy drinks.

That's how we do things where I come from.

Usually whatever I'm actually drinking (Coke, Sprite, 7Up, Iron Bru, Mountain Dew, etc.). I'm from England, by the way.

Up here in New York, it's commonly soda. Coke is used if you're specifically referring to a cola product (such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi), and "Pop" brings flashbacks of a black-and-white soda fountain run by Joe McCarthy and Ed Sullivan.

I suppose I should mention that the entire debate in the United States over whether or not to call it 'soda' or 'pop' stems from the early days of it's invention when it was called by its full name, 'soda pop'

Colloquialisms being what they are, everyone and their cousin jumped on one side of the fence separating the vast fields of etymological simplification and, regional trends being what they are, have remained on their respective sides to this day.

It's no different than the reduction of any other of the many terms in the English language (text messaging...texting, electronic mail...e-mail, web log...blog) only there's more than one direction it can take

I'm from the UK and i say whatever brand the drink is. For example: "Hey you wanna can of 7 up?" Or "OMG I LOVE DR. PEPPER!" etc

In north Texas we call it coke. But when I'm out in west Texas or northern Mexico I revert to Fresca.

In Georgia things usually go along this line:
"Would you like something to drink?"
"Yeah, I'll take a Coke."
"What kind?"
"Dr. Pepper I guess."
It weirded me out at first, but you get used to it.

Hunh, third poster in a row from Georgia...and yeah, i call it Coke, too. Unless I'm generalizing about orange flavor, in which case it's simply "orange soda". Coke covers every other type, though.

No one says soft drink anymore. Well, since i'm french we say "liqueur" or "boisson gazeuse". Although, I said "liqueur" once at a restaurant. The guy next to me was american. He thought I asked a beer. He made a huge panic and called the restaurant irresponsible. I still remember his face when the waitress came with a Coke.
