SO who of you did play doom?
I played all the Doom games. I grew up playing them. I always play the single player campaign before I hop into the multiplayer.

I am with Yahtzee on this one a game needs to stand on single player alone any multi player feature is just that an added feature that I may or may not choose to use.
Yeah this, there needs to be a picture here of the shelf full of guns and Energy Swords covered with cobwebs from Yahtzee's Halo Reach review (i think)

I would if I could but I am far to old to know how to do something like that.

Why wouldn't you? That's be like buying a book for paper.

If a game can't stand on it's single player story then it can't stand at all as far as I'm concerned. I did the same as you, I played the multiplayer of both Black Ops and AC:B, not wanting to ruin the story too soon after getting them. I finished both stories and loved both of them. They both had great endings and I'm glad I finished them.

Anyone who skips on the story for multiplayer is doing everything so very wrong.

I play both, and sometimes way more of the campaign then multiplayer. Unless a game is multiplayer exclusive, I usually play multiplayer components to increase longevity. I love single player games.

And despite my preference for single player, I still call bullshit when Yahtzee says that a multiplayer component can only be a supplement to the campaign.

I always go through the campaign first, it lets me get a feel of the game before jumping into the competitive portion of the game. I never played doom personally, only my friend play it, I wasn't into shooters as much back then, because they freaked me out back then. I played Quake though, I shat myself playing that when I was 8.

Most of the time. Battlefield Bad Company 2 was the exception. The original game's campaign was not a terribly fun time and I bought the game for multiplayer anyhow. To this day I think I've played three campaign missions in the 60 or so hours I've spent playing the game.

A game only needs to stand on the strength of it's single player if people are buying it to play a single player game. Battlefield seems a reasonable exception, being a traditionally multiplayer only affair.

I would note that there are plenty of games where I only really play the single player component. Halo is a notable example.

Same with Timesplitters 2, although it's campaign was shorter, but had variety in spades.
I literally could not tell you how many times I have played the TS2 campaign. I don't enjoy playing shooter campaigns as much as I used to, they often lack enough variety and are too tedious for me to enjoy them. TimeSplitters 2 was a shooter with a fantastic campaign that has never made me bored, and I've played Siberia (the first level) more times than I've had a hot meal!*
I still play a shooter's campaign but not nearly as much as I used to, however I think this is probably due to a decline in quality :p

*This is an exaggeration, but a much smaller one than would seem logical :)

Campaign first applies to all games I play. Halo: Reach, Black Ops, AC:Brotherhood, Gears of War. Only 2 exceptions though.
Red Dead Redemption and Bad Company 2.
Red Dead Redemption: That game is REALLY long. I wanted to play Undead Overrun. It's FUN, so sue me.
Bad Company 2: Because it Bad Company 2, online is what it does best.

I love the Call of Duty single player campaigns. Always play them first.
This is pretty much where I stand with the Call of Duty series.

I always play through the campaign at least once. Sometimes I play through it many times. If it's a shooter on xbox, then it's all I'll play, since I have no Gold.
If it's on pc, then I will play the campaign for sure, and maybe follow up with multiplayer. I don't always play the multiplayer, but I make sure to always complete the campaign once.

I always play the campaigns. I felt robbed when Team Fortress came out without a single-player option even though I knew there wasn't going to be one.

Multiplayer has to offer the right options. I find Left 4 Dead very engaging because Valve balances the game so the team that acts like a team WILL WIN EVERY TIME. The sort of alpha-dog solo garbage you get instead of teamwork in most games really annoys me. More games should have a dynamic to keep people together.

Some games I skip the multiplayer. Starcraft II is a great example of this, I really don't need to have my ass handed to me umpteen million times to understand I'm not very good at the game. Same with twitch games like Modern Warfare, I loved the campaign so much I can't even tell you but I lack the fighter-pilot reflexes to be good at multiplayer.

you didn't give the option for 'I play campaign then maybe the multiplayer', thats how I go with FPS games.. if I enjoy the gameplay enough then I'll give it a go with multiplayer, otherwise it's all campaign for me..

Well most of the time I JUST play the campaigns because my Xbox is not constantly hooked to the Internet and my PC is not powerful enough for anything, but sometimes I play the Multiplayer over at a friends PC, or we play Splitscreen (which becomes rarer and rarer, sadly...we need MORE CO-OP CAMPAIGN MODE!!!)
