Poll: Do You Turn Off Your PC/Console?

I always turn them off, though strangly my stereo is always on (or on standby, but thats not really off)

My 360 always get's turned off unless i just pop to the shop for batteries.

My PC however...where do i begin, i neither keep it on or turn it off. You see, when i got my computer (nearly a year ago) it was fine, i could turn it off no problem... then after a month shit went down, now when i turn it on, it roars like a Tyrannosaurs Rex who found someone sitting on a toilet (cookie for reference?) and when i turn it of, it makes a very high pitched static like whining sound that will NOT SHUT UP!! D:

So i have to put on it on sleep, which is not good considering i get loads of updates, so most of the time during the night it randomly updates and awakens again.

Even when i awake it it sounds like a dinosaur. does anyone know how to solve this problem while I'm on the subject?

Sound coming from the fans? if so thats a very simple fix for almost nothing

The Wii doesn't really turn off as much as go to stand by. So, barring a power failure, it stays on.
And I try no to shut my gaming PC down. I use hibernate instead.

You can change that behavior by turning WiiConnect 24 off.

I turn off my console usually so it doesn't over heat and I let my desktop stay in sleep mode and locked.

Computer goes off when I'm done with it.

All this nonsense about straining it seems ridiculous; if it can't perform a basic functionality like turning on without threat then what's the point?

Nope as i said, it's static, it comes from the power source i believe (well the socket on the back of the computer that connects the plug to the power source) when i unplug from the plug socket, it's fine and stops, but then when i put it on it's slow for the rest of the day, and i hate slow computers.

I turn everything off. If Im not using it then why increase the electric bill, right? Oh and its apparently good for the enviroment or something...I just dont want to spend more than I have to.

Does nobody worry about electricity bills? And although I'm not particularly bothered, surely having all these electrical appliances can't be good for the environment. I always switch my laptop/consoles when I'm not using them for more than about half an hour or so.

I dont pay the bills so i leave my PC on all night downloading torr....i mean....hello kitty updates. It's never had any cooling problems so im not worried.

Once, I turned all three PC's on a few seconds apart from each other and it tripped the breaker. Apparently they suck more juice at startup then any other time. We have played LAN games with all three PC's under load and it still never tripped the breaker.

That's a bit different to turning one machine on and off though. I'm not saying it doesn't require more power initially, but actual strain that causes damage to it I find hard to believe.

The only machine I keep powered on is a Dell Studio machine (mini desktop with laptop parts) as it functions as a NAS, FTP, web and a few other functions. The rest I keep powered down unless they're needed, none of the machines take long to boot and it's clearly a waste of power. The argument for keeping machines on because they suffer more each time they're powered on is a bit out of date as at that time (I've heard that advice from before the Pentium days) fans were small and many parts were passively cooled. However now most devices need quite a bit of cooling and on laptops particularly the dust the fans are sucking through can be an annoyance to deal with particularly as many machines don't make it easy to clean out the fans.

While it is actually true Woodsey... its highly overblown really. you wouldn't see any of the effects for many years so its a non factor. however if you was pushing your power supply close to max output all day and night that would be different

My consoles get turned off, but not by the switch. So they're in standby i think.

Thanks, and well im not a fan of pre built pc's I find they use less than great parts most of the time, you Probably have a cheap Chinese bit of crap in there as a power supply to save on there costs
