It really depends on the game and my character, regardless if it's MMO or tabletop RPG.

If I'm playing a paladin or cleric, usually, yes. Yet, sometimes I enjoy playing characters who don't worship a specific diety, but pay homage to several, depending on circumstances (tabletop D&D is a perfect example). My char. might offer a prayer to Tymora while disabling a trap or hail Tempus as I'm charging into battle.

And I've never played Oblivion or Elder Scrolls.
I'm not gonna force you but The Elder Scrolls is a big RPG experience if you like RPGs then you'll love TES. I don't actively avoid the religious side of RPG's when it comes to my characters, but they tend to all be amoral selfish bastards anyway who wouldn't give the time of day to a deity.

I was a devout follower of Saradomin in Runescape, but I converted to Guthix when I realised his stuff was cheaper. Seriously, Zamorak items were millions of gold each, Saradomin was close behind and then Guthix clothes were a few hundred K.

I'm a financially aware follower!

not really, if i was playing my own character (i find minecraft and mount and blade are good examples of this) and there is an option to worship a god, i would probably go for what suits my character in my mind, otherwise i just go for whatever gives me good stuff.

No, I am God in RPGs.

And seriously:
Depends on the character. I always love role playing a fanatic warlock worshiping someone. Asmodeus for example in NWN2.

I've only played a few where that's a relevant question. Oblivion, Dragon Age and Fable are the ones that immediately spring to mind.

In Oblivion I found it rather pointless except for a few bonuses, and in Knights of the Nine I was really only in it for the quest and loot. If anything I resented the Gods there for making me walk all over Cyrodil to visit their wayshrines. In Shivering Isles however Sheogorath was awesome, so I was fine working for him, then at the end I had legitimate reason not to give a damn about the other Gods.

In Dragon Age all the Chantry people annoyed the hell out of me with their preachiness and the fact that I was a Mage, so I was definitely, if not atheistic merely anti-theistic in that game.

In Fable it was totally irrelevent, but I assumed it was just the Priests giving me various rewards for donating and stuff.

In any case it's always felt largely pointless, except where the Gods actually do things. If I were running an RPG with Gods and the player could worship them, I'd at least include an incentive to do so, or a faction bonus or something because otherwise it's just lore which is fine, but ultimately irrelevant.

Interesting question, since in these type of games they seem to essentially confirm some kind of god exists in their universe I tend to create a character who believes there is one but dismisses any religion based around it (fuck those Chantry guys in DA: Origins).

For my character to worship a god, the god in question must meet the following prerequisites:

1. Provides evidence for its existance.
2. Grants some sort of tangible favour in exchange for worship (spells, blessings, not smiting me etc.).
3. Worship isn't too big a hassle (no cutting off my own limbs, no antagonizing major paladin orders).

In Dragon Age, no, there is no in game evidence for the Maker (I'm fully expecting Flemeth to be the Maker or Andraste)

In Oblivion, the Gods are pretty damn real so there's not much belief so my character usually follows whoever is offering gear at the time.

Real Life, Atheist, no evidence for any god so it seems childish to have an imaginary friend.

Personal favorite god(dess) that one of my characters has worshipped: Aasterinian. It was a good excuse for my Ice Genasi to spend the games dancing, playing a lute, smoking pipeweed and shagging the dragonborn my spouse was playing. Good times.

the almighty greenback! the only god i worship in RPGs is the god in charge of money! Always need more of it! money money money!!!

Otherwise the answer is No. while i have sentiments towards the characters i play i do not care for the religious lore of world. my attitude towards them is kind of like Brad Pitt's Achilles in the movie Troy.

Well, most RPGs have Gods, both "Good" and "Evil." Dragon Age had it, with the maker and demons in the fade, The Elder Scrolls have more gods then necessary, but I'll just say the Nine Divines and Daedric Princes for now, and even Fable TLC had Avo and Skorm. But to me, they always just seem to there just to "immerse" you more, and other than that I haven't paid much attension to them. But who acctually, as a part of their character role, have a god they would pray, worship or give blessing to.

For me, the gods have just been their in games to annoy me (anyone else hates those priests in Oblivion when you go to talk to them and they're like "PRAISE BE TO AKATOSH AND ALL HIS GLORY!!!") but if and when I do "worship" a god, it's always in Oblivion and always either on of these 3 "gods:"
*Sheogorath- for my funny characters
*Azura- for my good characters
*Nocturnal- for my thief characters
Are you kidding? "Cleric" is my favorite class in the world for D&D tabletop games. One of my best characters ever was in a homebrew campaign where I played Mordakai; Priest of Gnarl, God of Gnomes and Gnomish Supremacist.

(He kind of felt about Gnomes like Hitler felt about Blond haired, Blue eyes Germans.)

Well, I'm agnostic in real life, but video game gods tend to make themselves present in ways more apparant than a face on a piece of toast.

When I do go for a video game god, though, it'll tend to be the more good and sunshiny of what choices I have.

Many an hour did I prowl the halls of deepscorn hollow, sending fools to swim at the feet of the dread lord sithis. Many a fool did fall before my blade and many a fool did flee from my sight. Some day I may join that whirpool, but until then, I shall make sure I have no lack of company when I get there.

The Gods in games have more adequate proof of their existence than the "real life" ones.
Really, because it's easy to hard code a god into a video game than it is to have faith enough in one in Real life. Just because in games you pray at a shrine and get +10 Dex for 1 hour seems to be more than praying at church here instead of out driving around and not knowing that a drunk driver ran a red light at the same time you were at the chuch, and if you weren't at the chuch you would have been driving through the intersection at the same time the drunk driver was. I'm sorry, but I'd like to keep my unknown blessings in real life. (Though +10 Dex for a rogue, great stuff!)
