In most Roguelikes I do because it's such a huge part of the game, otherwise I just go with whatever makes most sense to the plot.

Since I became Sheogorath I sort of gave up on that end, but Sithis, the Dread father always seemed like a nice individual with... Interesting moral values...

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on what mood takes me or what kind of character I want to play, or how the game is structured. Also, if it provides nifty benefits then questing for God X always sounds like a neat idea.

I find theology in games to be really interesting. Same as outside games I guess, mythology and all that makes great stories.

I'm an Atheist outside games, but if deities exist in the game I'll pick one if it fits with my character.

In Dungeons and Dragons I do it pretty much every game, I just vary the degree of importance I put into "the gods" with each character. (E.g. the fighter who calls for Tempus to lend him his might before a big battle but never really thinks about it the rest of the time, or the paladin who's every action is for the betterment of his faith.)

Dungeons and Dragons has so many deities with their own stories, ethos, dogma, and associated powers. I usually think of my own characters world view first, and then see if there is a deity out there that strongly fits. If I ever make a character that doesn't follow any deity it's usually because the only deities the character knows don't fit with their way of life.

In a game where gods are real, can you really be an atheist? (I guess the answer is no if your character is educated+rational)
I suppose you could discount the gods, maybe you could feel that the gods are not worth following. Rather than deny their existence.

In a video-game however it rarely matters, maybe it gives you stats or whatever, but unless there's a chance to role-play something related to the deity I rarely think about it.

TLDR;
I get a sense of world-view for my character at inception, and if there is a deity that fits then my character will follow whichever fits.
In dungoens and dragons it's always a roleplaying decision, but in a game it's always about the stats or cool/fun/funny factor.

Other than Dungeons and Dragons I can't think of a game that makes the decision of a deity meaningful really (in fact I cant think of a game that lets you pick at all - with the exception of Dungeons and Dragons computer games)

Since im Christain, nope, I say they are real but they are not gods (in game people) they are like people like Shaogorath or aka ME just people that have alot of power, hoepfully you can become pwerful in skyrim as well...
Shaogorath can immobilize you with his mind and teleport you to terminal velocity if you try to attack him. His entire realm is actually his own mind. Can you really say with a straight face that he is not a god, or is this just the blasphemy/ convert or die attitude from the church? This is a game not real life, but the church does get butt hurt over anything that questions their one "true" god don't they?

OT- If I were to worship a god from a game it would be.... wow I really don't have that many games with gods in them. Um, I would have to say Malacath.

Malacath is the Daedric prince whose sphere is the patronage of the spurned and ostracized, the keeper of the Sworn Oath, and the Bloody Curse.

Here is a good link to all the Elder Scroll's gods.

I'd say you were the one who got butthurt there buddy...

Only in Dawn of War because I feel that gets me into the character of the faction I'm playing. "Blood for the blood god!"

Do I? No

Do my characters? Yes.

I play D&D set in the Forgotten Realms setting, and let's just say that atheists don't fare well in the afterlife, at least under 3.5 setting rules

Now that I think about it, Oblivion is just about the only game where I don't give my characters patron gods. I should look into that.

I'm an agnostic IRL and I usually roleplay my characters the same way, I choose the skeptical options when confronted with religous options and when people like Leliana keep going on about the Maker I always respond with doubt over whether the Maker is real, or when the revered mother asks if I want a blessing I politely decline.

As for Hawke, if he existed why would the Maker punish people like Bethany by condemning them to a life of imprisonment in the circle or a life on the run as an apostate when they don't have a bad bone in their body? Why would he allow people such as Meredith to be his most powerful and vocal yet oppressive supporters?

I think the Maker was designed to be questioned as several characters actually lay the argument out and let the player decide. In Oblivion I only went to the temples when I needed healing and curing of a disease.

This seems familiar... >.>

Depends.
Short answer would be no, however if the game emphasizes RP, then I wouldn't say no per-se.

An example would be trying to play a faithless Paladin in D&D, it wouldn't really work, would it?

Nope, not at all. I can see why people would do it but its just not my thing. I actually find it almost cringe worthy when I hear the npcs worshiping AKATOSH or who ever just like I find it cringe inducing when I hear them say made up swear words or say "By the nines". Its just not my thing.

I don't even worship my own god as a Paladin in DnD... Though given my antics as a Paladin, I'm sure my god hates me.
And you DM let's you get away with that? None of your Paladin abilities should work and you should be unable to level up unless you have the favor of your god. It's part of the fun, challenge and balance of playing a Paladin.

In character, yes. Religion tends to be an important aspect of many fantasy-medieval settings.

Pretty much no, my characters are all either athiests, or if its a game where gods existing is pretty much a universal truth, like oblivion, then all they do is acknowledge their existance, not worship them.

Nope, unless it actually exists unlike religions out there today.

Especially disgusting when religions actively oppose each other like christianity does.

No. I'm strongly anti-theistic, and wouldn't sully any character with the belief in an ultimate authority.
You have like the perfect profile picture for a scientific practical minded man. Also Mordin is a f**king badass.

Generally I just say I worship the sun god even if there isn't a sun god in the game it just sounds cool to me.

Don't we all.

It all depends on the character. I've played Christians, Satanists, followers of Death, Fear...

It's about the character, not the player.

I dunno...that could be a really fun character to play. And the God himself might just be capricious. The Christian God certainly wouldn't give extra powers to his Paladins, because "proof denies faith" and all that.

Of course, the OTHER Paladins would loathe you...As would the other Gods.

Even better...Perhaps the "God" you're not believing in is the Trickster, who's pulling your chains for a lark - giving you all the "Holy" powers.

Never trust a GM who lets you have a strange request.
