I'm not religious , so I've been wanting to raise this question myself (there seems to be a significant enough religious gaming community here). Because even when I'm making very specific or "evil" characters, I can never bring myself to make a religious character.

I guess it's because I wouldn't have any respect for the character, or maybe I just figure that since being religious makes no sense to me, I can't fathom how one my my characters could be so illogical in their thinking.

EDIT: I started thinking of this when playing DA: Origins, so it kinda pissed me off that despite there being one (kinda) moment when you can make an atheistic comment, Hawke remains casually religious (Uses too many expressions involving the maker) throughout DA2.

usually not, it has always struck me as kind of weird to have a religion when actual gods walk the earth as they do in rpg's....

as for real life, if you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people.

Why is there no option for "I don't, but my character does"?
Please try not to take it so literal, it's obvious I was talking about the character, not the player. Have a read through the poll options again and what other people put as a answer.

Only if it will grant me some kind of bonus or special item.

Though I guess that can't be called worhipping...

I don't so much worship them as I would continuously catch myself swearing by them in Dragon Age.

"By Andraste's soiled, flaming knickers don't STAND in the AoE!"
That may be the funniest curse I've heard this year, and I can sympathize with the cause.

OT: It depends on the game. I've never really been able to get into most in game religions, but after seeing so many clerics in D&D who didn't care about RP at all I tried it out and it was a lot of fun. Also in DA:O Leliana converted my first character pretty thoroughly. I think being religious can add a lot to a character as far as RP value goes, but only if its adhered to.

If worshiping a specific god had changes to the game play, it would be an interesting thing to think about. But without motive no.

I dunno, is there a God for revolver magnums?

Other than Dirty Harry, of course!

In all seriousness, yes and no. Yes my character may respect and fear certain Gods (Assuming that they actually make their bloody presence known! There's a fookin' reason I think the nine are as bollocks as the priest's hairstyles.), they never really "worship" them, per say. Like, for example, they're not going to claim "Aw, Lord Sheogorath would LOVE it if I set this Khajiit's tail on fire, then dropped them into a well, then dropped a warhammer with a small child tied to it, with a pouch of silver nuggets stuffed into their mouth, on top of them!", but they may help the Mad God mind-rape the ever-loving SHITE out of some poor, poor villagers.

...Disregarding how much that bit in quotes sounds like something that would legitimately please the Mad God...

Depends on the character and game really. If the gods are active in the game world then maybe the character may be the praying type. So yea, it varies between characters.

IRL? No, I don't worship any god, 'real' or from a fictional setting.

Rarely, if I'm not making a character thats a cleric or something I won't roleplay faith as an important aspect of a character. Religion is complicated subject for me in real life, so I usually don't think to much about it in my escapism.

I will have my character pray to a God in an RPG, depending what my character is meant to be and what perks I get for joining their religion.
Yeah World Peace is fine and all that Mr. Monk but does this religion come with a free Railgun or am I just wasting my time here?

Kord baby, all the way. God of Strength and power, and the fuel for combat and proving one self.
Now I even take that into outta life. His teachings of constant trail and proving yourself in the heat of the moment have taught me to be smart and show I can be a better person in those situations.

...I should probably get looked at by a Psych. I don't think its healthy to pray to the god of battle and strength.

Since im Christain, nope, I say they are real but they are not gods (in game people) they are like people like Shaogorath or aka ME just people that have alot of power, hoepfully you can become pwerful in skyrim as well...
Not wanting to troll, but REALLY? It's a role-play. Because you're Christian, do you also never do bad things in moral choice games?

My Knight Imperial character in Oblivion actively worships the Nine Divines. Like any other good Imperial citizen who doesn't want to get his ass handed to him by any guard within a three city radius.

My Lunatic Argonian worships Sheogorath. And his pet Shambles skull.

My Battlemage Altmer mostly worships Lorkhan. But generally doesn't care.

My Barbarian Nord worships Ysmir. And beer.

In Dragon Age I generally play Elven characters, so hurray for the Creators. The Maker is an ass. As is Andraste for outright hating mages.

...I say sometimes, depending on the game and what character I play, but if I do, I get waaaaay too into it.

It really amazes me how many people here are saying things like "I'm an atheist, so I don't believe in gods in videogames." Seriously? Do you just constantly play yourself in every RPG you play? How dull.

Or did you people just not read the OP's post all the way through, and think he meant that you worship video game gods in real life? Cause if so... really, people, read the whole OP.

OT: Yes, my character in an RPG will often be religious. Not every character, but many of them. It can add depth to a character, and certainly adds to world immersion.
