Personally? No, not at all. If sex in movies/games are there it should be because thats what the movie/game is about, not to ad a sellingpoint. But considering people in general and the poll so far, yes... It does make people buy...

I love this. Every single person here says "Oh, I don't get affected by it."

Yeah, I'm sure you do. On some level. Not to say you buy a game because the main character's hot, but your original impression of the game is raised by her not being a dull, frumpy creature that you don't want anything to do with.

I suppose this could be construed as being in the other direction - it's not that sex sells, but if it's not sexy, it doesn't sell. But that's what our world is like now I suppose. Everything is designed to appeal to our senses, and I don't mean just hot women either. All products, from magazines with their front covers, to your bottle of Lucozade adorned with carefully selected colours and the contours of the plastic itself, is all designed to be sleek and unique. Actual physical sex is obviously the highest form of this, and that's why it affects us the most prominently. But the other, lesser degrees are found in everything around us.
Aurora is right, but there's more to it. And it is pretty funny to see all of the people who say that it doesn't work on them. The idea of marketing isn't for every person who sees an add to say "Ooh, what a hottie, I should buy their product." Besides the fact that a lot of this likely has an effect on a subconscious level that you don't realize, getting people thinking and/or talking about their add is generally a good enough win. By saying "Did you see that add with Paris Hilton, she looks so trashy it totally turned me off from their hamburgers" you are doing a couple of things. One, you are potentially telling people who haven't seen the commercial that there is something of note and they may go look for it on youtube or wherever. You're basically doing the advertisers job for them getting their ad in front of more eyes. You are also bringing up the add in your and other people's minds, and not just the part about Paris Hilton. Somewhere in their head the idea of a hamburger is rolling around and may eventually pop out later on "Hmm, I could go for a hamburger."

Basically, while not everyone does whatever a celebrity (or non-famous good-looking person) tells them to, it can still "sell" in a variety of secondary ways.

Of corse sex dosen't sell. If you want sex open another tab and google it. It's cheaper (and in some cases free).

Well, I think it's just a testament of media producers being well versed in one of the most basic rules of... well doing anything that's intended for an audience, 'know your audience'.
Which doesn't speak well for the general public.

I can see how overly biased is the OP to make sure the "Yes" answer sounds stupid, and used Paris Hilton as his prime example.

Sex isn't about stupidity. You could have asked "Does stupidity sells?" and the answer would have probably been the same: it sells to some, not to others.

But anyhow, here is my personal answer: when it is well presented/executed, sex can be one of the positive factor that contributes to making me want the product.

If one single person saw Jennifers body then yes, yes it does.
I watched that expected something hot, and sexy. What I got was pure unleaded nightmare fuel. least sexy thing I've ever seen.

To the OP's question: Sex will make me want something more, if I already want it. Say a game I want has romance sub-plots, then I'll want it more because of that. However, if sex is used to sell something like a cheesburger (going of an earlier example) I won't be more inclined to buy it.

Sex sells. If it doesn't sell, it will at least get someone to take a second look at your product. Unless it's overdone to the point where someone might find it crude. THEN it boils down to personality. I personally enjoy when it's overdone on purpose for comedy.

Perfect example:

I've never particularly understood why they SHOW it in films.

I mean, I can buy that people fall in love or grow phsyically attracted, which culminates in sex, but I don't get why I HAVE TO WATCH

It's too "decent" for someone to get aroused by it, and it does nothing plot- or character development-wise to justify itself

It can't be boiled down to "OMG SEX, SO HAWT. LOOK, FAMOUS ACTRESS "X" IS NAKED!" because, as I say: It's too tastefully done and short and unrevealing to be sexually arousing, but it's still clearly ment to be attractive

It seems a bit confused most of the time. I can't think of a single film where it had a reason to be shown to me directly, rather than implied or shown in some abstract way, like them kissing and the light going out, or them falling on the bed together and waking up the next day.

Umm.. of course it does. I mean, there's a reason there's a porn industry in this world.

Of course sex sells, everything is about sex. I personally am swayed by sexual imagery and I'm not exactly a sex starved stereotypical nerd.

Oh and Paris Hilton is not sexy in the slightest she has the body of a 14 year old boy the voice of my nightmares and the intelligence of a blob of slightly hardened putty. I like real women thank you very much!

Yes, but it has to be done well. See the example, though in this case, it was more "Audrey tautou" sells.

.
Since seeing this Amelie ripoff advert, I drink a bottle of Chanel No. 5 before bed, every night.
