To be honest when my brothers were smaller at a similar looking age they wanted their nails painted as they were into any kind of dressing up girls clothes or boys, the used to steal my mums shoes or my dads ties anything they could get their hands on. can't it just be for fun?

Frankly I'm horrified. Children, having fun? Clearly this is all down to those damned liberals. No honest, god-fearing person would allow a 5 five year old to enjoy himself with his mother! Someone get that child a knife so he can go whittle wood like a proper man.

As a guy who played with Polly Pocket when I was a kid I see nothing wrong with this.

There's no such thing as the "gender confused" market. That's a bunch of walking-on-eggshell, politically correct crap that comes as a result of everyone in America having to be "special snowflakes". Whatever happened to gay, straight, and (ugh) "bi"? Having to use half a keyboard of capital letters when speaking of gays so that no one gets "offended" is pointless and a waste of time

Well, it's only 4 letters, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). That covers all bases (though I'm not sure why you can't condense lesbian and gay). And really, isn't using a microbe of effort so as not to offend someone worthwhile? I mean, LGBT is shorter than saying gay, straight and bi as you did.

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot a rather important point. Gender confusion and transexuality is very, very different to sexuality. A man who wants to be a woman (or vice versa) isn't necessarily gay, which is why you have to class them seperately.

So I'm wondering, why is this so offensive and controversial?
Because homophobic Christians.
No, priests actually wear pink gown thingys at least once a year, so I would not see why Catholics at least would have a problem.
It does say that sodomy is very bad in the Old Testament. But no, I don't think the majority of Catholics do have a problem with this. Although, it'd be a stretch to claim that the majority of Catholics are homophobic, too.
However, the roots of the problem lies within the ranks of the conservative religious right, and I don't think anyone would bother to attempt to deny that.

I've heard people say the same thing about a friend who had a ponytail. Remarkably thick people with no actual experience in child psychology or much of anything aside from screaming like morons who don't realize they're the biggest threat to their kids because they don't acknowledge that the children are capable of forming their own opinions.

Or to keep on topic, yes, i see an issue. People are far too narrow minded.

no.
personally, I've always had a problem with commercials that show parents interacting with their children. the way they smile all big and stupid while watching every single thing the kid does. but as for the issue in question, no. I don't see that at all.
and what about that Trident commercial where the little girl is putting makeup on her younger brother? nobody was bothered by that, were they? and that was more than just pink nailpolish.

This is just not offensive... Whoever argues that it is has too much time on their hands.

Wow. The mere fact that there are some people that consider this "controversial" seriously speaks to the intolerance of our society. It's like anything that can be vaguely interpreted to imply support of non-traditional gender roles is aiming to "corrupt" children.

To be honest, this isn't that weird. I had an older sister, she painted my nails a few times when I was a little kid. I even played with her barbies on occasion. Children that young don't have much gender identification. As that kid gets older he will likely be less interested in having his nails painted and will want to play with dinosaur action figures and what-not. Or maybe he'll be girly, but so what if he is?

Kid likes pretty colors on his toenails. There's nothing wrong with that. We all had to have our parents spoon feed us at some point in life, and I'm fairly certain everyone here has sufficient hand-eye coordination to eat on their own now. He looks like he's having fun and at that age, that isn't going to impact any choices he makes later in life. [footnote] Though, personally I would have gone with purple [/footnote]

ah the complicated process of socilization, a 5 year old would not probably not look at that ad so its not a big issue, his mind is shaped by watching his dad, tv, and what the young boys in the walmart catalog are playing with.

My mother dressed me in a wig and dress when I was that age as a joke. The only effect it had was some mild embarrassment when she breaks out the photo collection. Any questions?

What does pink have to do with sexuality anyways? It is true that it is generally considered a female colour, but I have seen many males wearing pink who were in no way homosexual.
Pink is a colour, not an idea or statement, just a colour.

Interestingly, in the olde-timey days (18th -19th century? not sure) pink used to be the colour for MANLY MEN, and blue used to be a girls colour. On the basis that blue was calmer I think. Or maybe something to do with the sea.
