First off, as a parent i would never want to purchase or give anything that would contribute to a child's boner. That's just too godamn creepy. Hell, I'll buy you Faces of Death and a 40oz before I buy you a porno.

Secondly, in film sexuality is real. Sure the context of "acting" and the mind states of the actors isn't real but even in a rated R movie those are real breasts bouncing in a guy's real face. Violence on the other hand is just some dude feigning a punch or just some red food coloring spraying from someones face.

I'd imagine that the logic of this mentality has faded long ago so now it's just a presumed defacto moral here in the States. It doesn't seem odd to me that people want to push the status quo towards games even though polygon characters and their genitals are not real.

I say, as long as some stupid 3 year old isn't playing GTA4, video games will have no effect on your personality, unless you were a crazed gunman already on the edge

In my opinion (otherwise known as "fact")
I seriously stopped reading there.

the truth is, someone has to take the ratings seriously, and if your mom really wouldn't mind, kindly ask her to pick it up for you. Otherwise, wait a couple years, and it'll all seem like some stupid joke.

To answer the subquestion, one must quote Zardoz:

"The gun is good. The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life, and poisons the earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the gun shoots death, and purifies the earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth and kill!"

Yeah, I'm not serious...

...or am I?

the ratings are there for our protection...or rather, young adolescents protection. Sex is kinda worse than violence because a young mind is very fragile and..well..more horny then they are violent. Soccer moms wouldn't don't want to walk in on their 13yr old son wanking it, and even more so floggin the dolphin to a video game charcter like any chicks in Dead or Alive...That be a one way trip to the leather chair of a psychiatrist.

For our protection!? I can't decide if your playing the role of docile puppet or deceitful puppeteer.

Well, since it's been bumped, I'll answer. Necroing is bumping a thread from being dead, as you did to continue your question. Somtimes it's justified (trawling through the old forum archives and putting in your two cents) but most of the time it's only called necro'ing if it's for an inane reason, like yelling "PUDDING!" or asking what necroing means eight days after the last post.

I don't think anyone here really thinks we should regulate the market to have more freedom(ughhh) but It's fascinating that we live in a society in which we will blindly accept advice from an anonymous third party about a subject so personal as, "What is appropriate for MY children to engage in." .

i think yes.... to a point... i mean young children are going to learn these things eventually.. but i think the max gaming age restriction should be 16.. because by that age you already know everything and by that time you already have sex and violence on the mind.. people get ahold of 18 games anyway.. so i think we should just restrict games to younger children.

Firstly, the idea that the responsibility is left to the parent is irresponsible in itself. A parent cannot keep 24/7 tabs on their children, it's literally impossible. So that's the first reason, that it's not their 100% responsibility to overlook EVERYTHING you do, and to be honest, I'm sure you'd agree that'd be really annoying!

Secondly, and this is NO personal attack to you, but there are parents out there who don't KNOW where to draw the line!! Parents who can't comprehend the boundaries of acceptable for their children, and it is partially because of these parents that games are rated! You can get mad and blame them all you like but that's the way it is!!

The sex and violence argument is valid, but it's a deeper issue. There's a great deal of social ethics that go behind sex, and the way it's dealt with must be very closely monitored at the best of times. ESPECIALLY in games, because the "female" is always seen as the "poster" of sex in a game. The way they dress, they way they talk and walk etc. They're just sex symbols, and most of the time nothing more. The more a person is exposed to this, girl or boy, the more they start to believe that this is rule! A woman is simply a sexual object of pleasure. Games are not AMAZING at balancing this perspective, so it's important that younger generations are not viewing this perspective too much. Well, to be honest, it doesn't matter how old you are, too much exposure to anyone can have an affect!
