Poll: Dubbed vs Subtitled

I will always watch the dubbed version of an anime If I can. I find that the japanese language often sounds too agressive IMO, and I like to pay attention to the art work. If it's a film like City Of God or something I'll watch it subtitled.

Subs. I reckon around 40-50% of my DVD collection is in languages other than English (mostly Japanese and Chinese, but with smatterings of French, Korean, and Russian)

Well, for live action, subtitled foreign films are for me. It is very difficult, even for talented voice artists to match the mouth patterns and acting style WHILST staying accurate to the script. Thus, hearing it with subtitles works for me since I'm a fast reader.

However, for anime, I'll hear both English and Japanese and determine which I like best. Some dubs I find to be superior to the original(Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, and FLCL by a skim margin) while I normally find other dubs to either be not quite as good, or terrible. I know some will argue that the Japanese is "the way its supposed to be", but it should be know that several animation companies have to approve of the dubbing company's scriptwriting and casting before they'll let them distribute the dub, so the original animators have a hand in how they want the English dub to be made.

Subtitles for the love of humanity. LotR is, strictly speaking SHIT in danish. As is most other films, except animation and classic toons.
Also I usually do english subs.

Subtitles for me. It ruins the movie if I'm watching it in my native language and I see their mouths moving nowhere near what they're saying.

I don't watch all of that Japanese-cartoon stuff, so I can't say for that. I'm mostly talking legit foreign films like Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage, and Mongol.

Not quite sure...the only foreign films I've seen were Iranian, and I speak farsi fluently. I voted for subtitles because that's probably what I'd pick if I didn't understand the language in a movie.

As an anime nerd I've always been bothered by the "Subs only" people. As much as 90% of anime is badly dubbed there are some great dubs that you are depriving yourself of, just because you don't even give it a chance. Ghibli films (which hire stupidly famous actors who know their stuff), Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and Black Lagoon stick out in my mind as great examples. Full Metal Alchemist, Azumanga Daioh, and Ranma 1/2 are at least tolerable. Then of course there's Ghost Stories which is only great because of the way they dubbed it.

Then there's the "But subs is the way they intended for you to watch!" argument which is flawed. Even though its not difficult, they didn't intend for you to read it at all. Though, I'll watch both versions depending on how grating the English dubbing is to my ears, for instance XXXholic is awesome but that Watanuki voice is just intolerable.

this is exactly how i feel about it i like subs, and will only watch live-action films in subtitles. However, i am a huge anime nerd, and watch a lot of dubbed anime (about a 60-40 split with subbed), and enjoy most of them (Trigun's dub was great, imo).

Subs all the way, i hate it when things get dubbed, it totally ruins the movie for me, the voices dont fit the characters, the mouths dont fit the words etc.. it totally ruins it for me, so im all for subtitles.

For the most part, I have to agree with all the others that stated, "Subs." There are those that work either way, but the original work of art is usually the better.

Subs for me, but that is only because finding a good dub is as hard as beating Battle Toads.

Subtitles for me, mainly because the quality of voice actors they use to dub films and anime in these days is exceptionally mediocre.

Depends on the quality of the voice actors. If they are good, dubbed. Means less looking at the bottom of the screen and more of whats going on. But most of the time they just phone it in, or just don't suit the character, so subbed most of the time.

Yeah, the Trigun dub was good, but I actually don't care at ALL for the Samurai Champloo one. Especially since the original japanese actors are so great in their roles.

I'm definitely not Sub-only, but a lot of anime are better with them. I'd say Bebop, Trigun, RahXephon, and Cromartie High School are about the only animes where I feel the dubbing quality surpasses that of the original voices. Then again, I've never seen Black Lagoon.

Most of the Ghibli dubs I'm fairly indifferent to, except for Kiki. I mean, Phil Hartman is just amazing, and the movie itself is easily my favorite Ghibli film ever.

i really hated the Cromartie dub, but yeah, RahXephon was pretty amazing. Trigun and Bebop stand among my personal top 5 shows in general, but the dub quality was wonderful.

The Ghibli dubs are never bad, per se, but they have some actors i'm personally not very fond of, and relegate great actors to side roles (Crispin Freeman as the SCARECROW in Howl? WTF?) but yeah, Phil Hartman was incredible. RIP.

For me, it's definitely subbed. I find that the original voicing for things is better in the original that in the dubbed... that, and I love subtitles, even using them in english movies/animations/shows.

It depends on if it's /good/...

But I'd vote subtitles, especially if they're made interesting. When I saw Nightwatch in theatres the small visual effects done on the subtitles did a lot to keep me interested in reading the whole film and not just watching the events unfold.
