When the original Duke Nukem "3D" became available for the Playstation 1 in 1996, I was merely 11 years old. Fortunately, being the third child of my beloved parents, they realized that violent video games depicting half-naked women (extremely pixelated half-naked women) would not affect me in any negative way.

As such, I played Duke Nukem 3D with great zeal, and had a whole lot of fun with it. Although, I was only an 11 year old boy at the time.

Simply put, I don't have any interest in the Duke Nukem franchise anymore. I'm not sure what the developers/publishers expect in terms of sales, but I am having a hard time imagining anything earth shattering in the financial section. I have no desire to pay money for garbage games like these anymore.

When I say "garbage" I am of course referring to shallow plot lines, linear levels, little/no replayability and an unacceptably high price tag of what will likely be $60, of course.

I have absolutely no qualms with scantily clad and/or naked women being depicted in video games; that simply isn't what this is about.

Again, let me emphasize, there was a time when a game such as this would instill me with great quantities of glee. The combination of being a "Badass with large guns" running around fighting unambiguously evil monsters whilst ogling at breasts (Now in high definition, to be sure) is something I have long since left behind.

As I have aged, I find myself drawn to video games that have at least half-decent plots, difficult choices to be made, challenging combat, decent control schemes, and most of all replayability. (The latter of which means that said game(s) must not be terribly linear) Obviously, I relish the experiences of games such as those found in the STALKER series, Fallout, Mass Effect, etc...

Bottom line: Does anyone else share any of these opinions?

Feel free to sound off about it.

For better or for worse, the fact that Duke Nukem Forever is finally coming out is "kind of a big deal".

I've been a fan of Duke since the 2d era where you used to drink soda for health and shoot zig zag lightning bolts. So yes, I'm all over every new press release, I can't wait for it.

Pre-ordered the Balls of Steel edition.

Nothing on this earth is going to stop me playing Duke Nukem Forever.

I don't even care if it ends up terrible, I'm going to frame it once I complete it.

So yes, I do still care.

I just won't be getting it. I just missed the Duke era of gaming so I'm not nostalgic and I generally dislike shooters.

Literally the only thing I remember about Duke Nukem is playing it at my friend-with-lazy-parents' house and giving money to strippers.

Then we'd go play Mario Kart 64 for like 12 hours.

I don't believe that DNF will be anything groundbreaking. At most it will probably be an "okay game with lots of immature humor". I personally, like Kunzer, prefer games with interesting plot, free world and possibility to choose my own path in the game (hail to the King The Witcher, baby).

Still despite all that I've already pre-ordered Balls of Steel Edition (pre-order isn't available in the poll btw) 'cause it ain't bad thing to every now and then to leave the brains out and enjoy good/bad/immature humor with lots of action added to it. Also like Veldie I don't really like all the "realistic shooters". If killing is meant to be fun (in games I mean) it should be done the fun way, not the realistic way (realistic way can be fun too for some but I don't personally really like it in the shooters).

I'll rent it. To be honest I think bulletstorm quenched my "I AM A MAN AND I NEED TO KILL THINGS WITH MY HUGE GUN RAAAAH" thirst so I probably won't be playing it for the actual game so much as I will for the comedy.

I'll probably get around to playing it sometime when I'm up for B-game shenanigans.

Will it be high art? Certainly not. Will it be good ol' fun - slightly enhanced by nostalgia for those who've played Duke Nukem 3D - splattering aliens with preposterous weaponry to cheesy oneliners? Quite possibly so, though the reviews will tell.

I never cared and still don't. I may give it a spin if a friend gets it like I usually do for games I am uninterested so here's hoping it doesn't let me down if I try it.

That thirst can be quenched?

So glad someone voiced this opinion. I got Duke Nukem 3D for Christmas the year it came out and I was 7, which means anyone younger than me almost certainly missed the boat. I only just made the boat myself, and I was so young most of the humour went over my head and probably because of this I wouldn't consider DN3D one of my favourite games, so I'm pretty ambivalent about DN:Forever - I'd suggest the intended audience for the game is probably close to 30 by now and find it... odd when a horde of younger people talk about how they'll "buy it good or bad" because the game itself isn't the point or something.

Dude I understand what you're saying, no one loves stalker, fallout etc... more than me, but I game a lot, seriously, if the noun "gamer" truly can be applied to anyone then it can be applied to me, and where i'm going with that is this: I need variety! Yes I love the deep and complex games, absolutely so, but there is most definitely room for all kinds of games and raw in-your-face fun games can be great too, yes they're automatically clichéd at this point, yes they can only be taken seriously when they don't take themselves seriously (bulletstorm, DNF) but its a valid genre and I for one am glad that balls-to-the-wall shooters still exist.

Just open your mind and enjoy whatever each game has to offer.

By all means. Variety is the spice of life. I think the crux of my original post is that I don't want to pay for this kind of game. It strikes me as a gimmick.

I do not have the luxury of playing every single video game, as they all cost money. (Yes, I purchase every single video game I play, unless it is free-to-play like league of legends) I have to pick my games carefully. I tend to lean towards those that will give me a rich, deep gaming experience and the best replayability for the cost of the game.

Mind you, I may one day pick up DN:F for $5-$10 on Steam. I just don't want to pay more than that for a gimmicky in-my-face game with boobs.

I want to stress that I am in no way opposed to people playing Duke Nukem Forever... I just personally can't imagine paying much for it, nor would I put it anywhere near the top of my "To Do List"

ok well I understand where you're coming from, personally though money isn't such an object for me, not saying I'm rich or anything but I do have enough to buy a couple of games a month if I want to which is probably as much as I'll be able to play through anyway.
On the other hand i'm pretty patient so I very rarely buy a game on release anyway, 9/10 i'll be buying it 2 years down the line in a sale or as a GOTY or platinum edition... I buy lots of games so I always have a back catalogue of games to play through anyway. At the moment I probably have about 10 games on my "to buy" list that I won't buy until the price is right, including Fallout NV, portal 2, bulletstorm, DNF, Witcher 2, crysis 2, mass effect 2... etc.
In the mean time I have plenty to keep me busy, I have about half a dozen games that I've installed and not played yet to work though.
