The long anticipated game, Duke Nukem forever has finally been released to the public. Much hype has surrounded the game since it has been in production for 14 years now. Even when the game was meant to be released in May, the developers still had to delay it for an extra month. Now that the game is out, how have people reacted to it?

So far, the reviews have been sour. Many people have been extremely dissapointed by the game and it's build-up. Some of its strongest weakpoints include its outdated graphics, weak storyline and dry humour.
Gearbox; the developers of the games have postponed the games release for such a long amount of time, gamers expected an outstanding experience. They will be dissapointed. Personally, I am surprised gearbox didn't see it coming:

It has been 14 years, so a sequel game for Duke would have be impress the gaming world. To live up to its expectations, it would require outstanding graphics, an immense storyline and tasteful humour. Sadly, the new game lacks in all of these.

I doubt this will be the death of Duke Nukem, however, this is gonna be a gaming mistake that will go down in history.

What are your views on the game? Would you consider buying it? If you already have, what have you thought of it?

Already got it, thoroughly enjoying it so far. I'm finding myself laughing at loud at some of the lines, although they do start to repeat after a while. I chuckled to hear him quoting Schwarzenegger and also saying "Tonight, you dine in hell", they've kinda brought him forward with the times.

As long as you don't buy it expecting it to be a genre changing masterpiece, then you'll like it. I got it purely to see Duke back to his FPS roots, but with new locales, new jokes, and shinier graphics. And I haven't been disappointed in any of those areas. "Duke Nukem's Titty City" was an awesome level ahaha

Uhh...... you DO know that 3D Realms were the main developers and Gearbox has only had the Duke Nukem franchise since September of last year, right?

It took 14 years for a reason, it had problems during the development, so now that they got it out of the way, they might do a true Next Gen Duke Nukem game.

I'd consider buying it for several reasons.

Firstly, it is one of those rather silly parts of gaming history, so just owning it, especially if you're of the right generation and the right age, which I am, is a kind of 'ha, look, we did it' moment.

Secondly, I didn't pay too much attention to the hype, and so I wasn't expecting some titanic super-game to come out of this whole affair. I was fully aware that whatever the product was it was going to be lacking in some way from what gamers wanted.

Thirdly, I haven't found a really objective review that tells me why the game is bad. As far as I can see all of the negative points people are bringing up are just 'it's not like the old DN games.' And why would I want it to be exactly? DN3D was over a decade over, and time has not sweetened it, at least for me.

Fourthly, Again, going by the reviews, the changes they seem to have made aren't things I think I'd mind. I liked Halo, and so if Duke Nukem is even a passable imitation of Halo, then it's at least worth something.

As long as it's functional, I'll probably buy it from a bargain bin in a few months.

I find it interesting that you say the game should have an "immense storyline and tasteful humour"

That is NOT what Duke should be about. Unfortunately neither is what Forever turned out to be

I just realised they probably bought it just because people would see if it was worth the wait, and they probably don't care about making a good game.

I wasn't a gamer when the Duke 3D came out, so changes such as regen health and 2 weapon limit probably won't bother me because they are mechanics that I've grown up with. I also think they both (2 weapon limit probably more so that regen health) bring a tactical aspect to first person shooters that they are not really given the credit they deserve for. On the other hand, the fact that I'm not an old fan will mean that I probably won't be as invested in the character or story of the Duke Nukem games and may be disappointed by how shallow it is.

I'll get the game but I was never in the camp who thought it would be the second coming of Christ, so if it does fall short of my expectations it won't be a big deal for me.

Yeah I am one of those guys who is aiming alot of venomous words at Forever right now.

I cant say with certainty that it is the BIGGEST gaming fail (I think Daikatana might still hold that title) but it is definitely an unforgivable turd of a product that was better off just not being made.

I was bored out my skull with Duke before I even finished first level. Yes immense fail.

Also, I cant wait to hear Yahtzees reaction to it after he said in one review "Duke all is forgiven, just give me the ability to carry around more guns than eyballs". Cant really tell since I never was able to play the game long enough but it seemed you could only carry 2 guns at a time. oh cant wait for wednesday.

OK I've played (and finished) it and I've have played far worse. It's not quite up for "fail" status. But still Don't buy it.

I do feel that the game should have used some of its older gameplay mechanics such as being able to carry several guns at once, instead of just 2.

No, no and no. All I wanted was tongue-in-cheek "whizz, bang, shooty fun". Those were the expectations of most fans of Duke 3D or any of its varieties. What they ended up making was slow, lacking in variety and devoid of several key Duke features (the guns, man!). Mainly the game needed the exploration of Duke 3D. The reason I liked that one more than most shooters is because of all the extra stuff to do and the feeling of accomplishment when the mission result screen told you you'd found all secrets. Or, conversely, the drive to try again if I'd missed any.

Basically, Duke 3D was a simple game with great gameplay depth (<-that's the important bit). That's what DNF should have been. Instead it's a shallow, cluttered game (as in driving sections, turrets and shrink sections). Instead of "Duke 3D better and more awesome", we got "Duke: Combat Devolved".

I'm playing the old Duke now, uninstalled this crap, and I'm waiting for a refund...
I don't really care about graphics, storyline, and humor.
I mean it's Duke it should be cheesy and immature and idiotic...and I miss the standard health bars and search for a health pack. I was happy when I found steroids in the old game, here I have them almost all the time...and I miss the arsenal of weapons...why couldn't they just create The Duke?! This feels like a bad, overpriced Duke rip off...

Wow it's really hip to hate on DNF isn't it? I will bet my balls that at least 50% of it's haters never played it.

So I just played Duke 3D again

Goodness me that game is a masterpiece, how could they screw up so badly? It's not like Duke 3D Was overly complex

Probably is, and sorry Gearbox, it's your fault too, it's funny the amount of people defending Gearbox over it, they released the damn thing! Though gladly, I'm not a mug and will just pick this game up when they start bundling it free with others games in sales :p

I wonder what it was like back in...what was it, 1995? 1996? When Duke Nukem 3D came out. I can almost clearly see early proto-forums abuzz with the earliest evolution of internet trolls complaining about how Duke Nukem 3D blatantly ripped off Doom and, Wolfenstein only with painfully bad humor and gratuitous nudity (well, maybe not gratuitous. Nudity was a new thing back then outside of Japanese visual novels I assume)

Anyway, I am getting this game and I thank all of the people complaining about Forever. For every complaint, I assume that's another sale not made. For every unit that doesn't sell, that's another missed point on the Gearbox stats-chart and another board meeting closer to the inevitable: the moment when Dunk Nukem Forever is given a drastic, permanent price cut. THAT is when I'll grab my copy of Duke Nukem forever because I don't mind a Halo clone and the odds of DNF having the flood are nil. Also unlike Halo, I get to microwave rats and, draw dicks on white-boards and in a single known book.

This is also my Bulletstorm plan. It's $40 but I'm not ready to pick it up yet because it will get cheaper before or, by December and that's when I'll have it. I'm hoping Duke reaches a similar price at a similar time so please, keep complaining about it and save me money.

I concur with this fine gentleman/madam with the one exception being that I didn't play Duke Nukem for different reasons (lack of proper hardware, if you will).
