I love a good pair of headphones. They're comfortable and can't just decide to take a suicide leap out of your ear canal the way my earbuds often seem to.
However, on hot summer days when I really need to go outside and listen to music (which is rare, though not unheard of), a pair of earbuds work nicely.

I only use headphones. Earbuds make my ears hurt, they fall out way too easily, and pretty much all of the ones I have tried have had really crappy sound. Plus my headphones keep my ears warm in winter, which is nice.

I've switched to ear buds because I can't find those headphones that go around the back of your head anymore.

Earbuds on my MP3, headphones for my computer.

Headphones are just way too uncomfy for when I go to the gym, which is where I use my MP3 the most. Plus they cancel out a lot more noise and when you're on your bike riding alongside a busy road, that's pretty dangerous.

However, I love that same quality when I'm playing games or watching a movie, so I'll use them then.

Headphones, earbuds are pathetic and poorly designed.
My Seinnheiser pair begs to differ.
Gotta agree with the Sinnheisers. Some of the best value for money buds I've ever bought, the sound quality if fucking brilliant. I used to have Skull candy but they can't hold a candle to Sinnheiser.

Well I have my Skullcrushers for gaming as they make for excellent horror gaming

But for my iPod I usually use buds as they're easier to use on the go

Earbuds when working out.....headphones all other times. Earbuds are uncomfortable and sound like crap but stay in place when jogging.

My Sennheiser headphones agree strongly.

...also, in-ear earbuds give a whole new meaning to the term "ear-rape"...

Earbuds. More specifically:

Mostly because I carry them in my pocket and it is kinda hard to carry a set of headphones in there...

I prefer headphones...I just never find earbuds comfortable. Unless I wear them at work or working-out I have some earbuds that clip behind my ears. Not the most comfortable but they will do...

Headphones indoors, In-ear Earphones when outside. You look like a bit of an arse hat wearing headphones outdoors.

Maybe if you're wearing big studio-quality noise-canceling headphones. They do come in other shapes and sizes, though.

Earbuds.

I find headphones uncomfortable, and they sit at the very top of my jaw under my ear lobes and put pressure on it, so I almost get this pseudo-motion sickness thing going on.

I have trouble finding good earbuds for running. I need them to be a snug fit so I can hear over wind when I run (I run on the beach usually, the wind can drown the music out if the buds are a loose fit) and I need them to not fall out. My current pair falls out frequently. This distracts me when I'm running, making my stride get sloppy and my awareness of what I'm about to step on diminish. So I'm still looking for a good pair for this purpose. I'm open to suggestions

For listening at home, I use the Bose Quiet comfort 15 Acoustic noise canceling headphones.

They're pretty swell.

The fact that their headphones are awesome doesn't mean that their earbuds suck. Because they don't, they too are very good, it's a good brand overall.

And yeah, I despise in-ear earbuds too. Not only I find them simply painful to wear, they also have the same dangerous quality headphones have while biking; they block out so much outside noise. I'd rather hear a big tractor behind me coming. Yay for rural areas.

There are plenty of earbuds that feature earclips to prevent them falling out. However, my own Seinheisser MX400's don't have earclips and they never fall out. It helps to put those small cushions over them, makes them clamp better in your ears. Lot more comfy too.
