Headphones. Earbuds are really uncomfortable. Although I use earbuds when I travel or when I'm at school, since headphones are not as portable as earbuds.

'Buds on the go, 'phones in the home.
I prefer earbuds though. Well, the iPod ones at least. Find them more comfortable for long periods of time.

Love my Bose headset. I did a paper on how terrible earbuds are for your hearing and I REFUSE to use them anymore unless they're the kind I can perch above my ears and listen to ambiently (not a word but I'm sure people will get my meaning)

Earbuds that hook round your ear. Plain earbuds make my ears hurt after only a very short amount of time (when they're not falling out) and I still haven't got the balls to go out in public wearing a pair of tincans.

Headphones are good for playing PC games and so on, but for all-around purposes, like walking with my iPod, I prefer earbuds. I hate not being able to hear what's going on around me when I'm on the bus or wandering through the university.

Right now I'm using the earbuds that came with my ipod for pretty much everything that has a headphone jack.

If I could find a set of headphones that were affordable, and that "feel good" I would probably switch

I use IEMs (In Ear Monitors). Not buds, IEMs. Since I qualify myself as an audiophile, I only have the best music listening MP3 out there (Cowons ruuule!) and some Sennheiser CX880s.

If I'm working out it's earbuds, my skull candy does a pretty good job. Everything else it's headphones, I did have a pair of Sennheisers but they broke, someone at work did it, so I'm in the market for another pair.

If I weren't such a damn audiophile I'd have a new pair by now.

Headphones seem to have an irritating habit of falling off my head (especially when riding around), plus if I use my Sennheisers I can't hear anything so I run the risk of getting run over. For out and about I prefer buds (good ones too, with an over-ear hook), but if I'm at home and need to be quiet headphones can't be beat.

I like these:

They do break after a while, but they're cheap and very comfortable.

Also, headphones tend to squash my ears and make them hurt.

That is exactly the pair I use, except I always go for the blue ones. MDR-J10s, right? Sure, the sound quality could be better, but not for less than three times the price.

OT: The above pair of earbuds when portability (or mobility for that matter -- washing dishes, much?) is important, a good pair of over the ear headphones when I'm sitting in one place but can't make much noise, and a full blown home theater system whenever I have the option. Nothing beats a good set of actual speakers, and no ear bud is going to beat a good pair of ear covering cans.

Right now, for computer use I use my crappy Sony headphones (I need a pair of Skullcandys but I haven't been too eager to get them yet), and I use my decent 20 dollar earbuds for my iPod. They've lasted me since last summer, and I've gone through three pairs of them. I don't really go for the in ear types because they ALWAYS fall out of my ears..

I personally use headphones as 4 years ago I was electrically shocked in my right ear by apple earbuds and have since lost half my hearing in that ear, please avoid ear buds, they are dangerous

When im at home i listen to a lot of vinyl and stream lossless music off my pc so i use my grado headphones. When im out and dont want to disturb everyone around me with my headphones (they are open) i use a cheap pair of jvc marshmallows.

I used Sennheisers and I gotta say that they were lovely for a little over a year until they broke.

Headphones = superior sound quality.

*stares at my Audio Technika clip-on headphones* I think I kind of have the best of both worlds. Used to have Skullcandy's but they broke and ALL my earbuds just seem to crumble away too. Plus earbuds are damn dangerous things. They never really look safe. >.>

As a musician, I HATE the way most ear buds affect the music. It makes it treble-y and sucks out most of the lower pitched tones. And everything sounds different overall.

I always go out and buy myself a nice pair of bulky, ear-surrounding headphones.
As a musician Sennheiser buds manage quite well =)
Anyway, i have a surround sound at my room for gaming, headphones for gaming elsewhere/ my keyboard and buds for my MP3
